Domenico Maria BONAVERI (Bologna 1653 - 1731)
1670. Bulino, circa 1670, monogrammato in lastra in basso. Rara. Engraving, circa 1670, monogrammed in plate below. AfterTitian. Beautiful impressions, printed on contemporary laid paper, with thin margins, light abrasions in the top, otherwise in good condition. These works are part of Notomie di Tiziano dedicate all'Ill.mo Sig. Francesco Ghislieri published in Bologna between 1670 and 1680. The title page contains the portrait of Titian between the bay leaves, the lion of St. Mark, a cloth containing the dedication. Here are 17 anatomical engravings. Fourteen of the plates are taken from De humani corporis fabrica of Vesalius and the other from Tabulae anatomicae VI, also of Vesalius. These in fact were not actually designed by Titian, but by Jan van Calcar, while the first g … [Click Below for Full Description]

BATHURST, D. Christoph.
[London ca. 1670-1680]. Single sheet, copper engraved map edges trimmed, map and sheet size: 29x 24cm., very good, old mends on verso, ever so faint damp stain to top which does not detract from the overall work, handsome cartouche. RARE A very primitive map, shows Bagdath to Bablion and other Persian areas, the Deserta, Maffa & Maris Rubriaditus at the extreme Western areas. To the extreme East is Corea, Japan and Firando; Fermofa [Taiwan], Philippine Insulae, Moluccae, Gilolo and Celebes. At the North is the Mare Caspivum Buzhara, Semerkan, Honan and then Tzli Na Chi Na, at the South is Sumatra, Aiwa Maior, with Borneo, Malacca and Lohor at the tip of the Malayan peninsula, no mention of Singapore. India, all of S.E. Asia, Cambodia, Siam, old Vietnam including "Batrang," Burma, Central Asia and the Bengala, with the great confluence of the rivers shown just under Amuy. <br> The map shows mountain ranges, large rivers, cities like Lahor, Fariah, Candahar, Goa, Zeyan or Ceylon, and China, with no cities cited, indicating this may be from around the late 1560's-as clearly the Portuguese had been to Firando in 1549, surely just after that, as nothing in the way of China's coastal citis nor is Macao cited, proving the point of being early. <br> The Great Wall of China, is not cited, and the great Mekong and Indian rivers are clearly shown. The great rivers of China all seem to emanate from one central and grand lake are [incorrectly] shown. One gets the distinct impression this was based on Portuguese knowledge, as it reflects their areas of influence, but omit all others, aga … [Click Below for Full Description]

(015). VD17 1:077359C. - Seltene, sogenannte Fegfeuer-Bibel. [Click Below for Full Description]

Longhi, Gioseffo.
Bologna, Longhi, [1670s]. - 1065 x 578 mm. Cloth-backed engraved view on 2 sheets joined, letterpress text pasted below (4 columns in Italian: "Descrizione della Città di Alessandria d'Egitto") with publisher's imprint. Matted. Unrecorded in the standard bibliographies and without counterpart in western libraries: a unique, large-scale view of Alexandria as seen from the north. Formerly the most powerful city of the ancient world after Rome, Alexandria came under Ottoman rule in 1517 and subsequently lost much of its importance to the new port of Rashid (Rosette), 40 miles east, though it would regain some of its former prominence with the construction of the Mahmoudiyah Canal in 1807. In Longhi's engraving, the Ottoman influence may be discerned in the people's clothing as well as in the city's architecture. Within the city are several mosques; the ancient obelisks are shown crowned with crescents. On the river Nile, which flows through the city and underneath the walls, the view depicts numerous trade boats and sailors. Outside the walls lies Pompey's Pillar. The Italian letterpress text pasted under the engraving provides mostly historical and geographical information. - Longhi's panorama seems to draw various aspects from previous works to create its own original representation of the Egyptian city. The perspective is similar to that used in Pierre Belon's 1553 "Observations" and in Braun and Hogenberg's 1575 "Alexandria, Vetustissimum Aegypti Emporium, Amplissima Civitas", published in their famous "Civitates orbis terrarum", but also to that in Mallet's smaller, almos … [Click Below for Full Description]

In 4to; 2cc.n.nn., pp.467, 1n.n.
Paris: De l'Imprimerie d'André Cramoisy, rüe S. Iacques, au Sacrifice d'Abraham, proche S. Severin, 1670. First edition. First edition of this important work on perspective and painting. "The draughtsman and engraver Grégoire Huret (1610-70) - an academician who was also close to the king - took over Bosse's lectures at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. In 1670, Huret published Optique de portraiture et peinture (Optics of portraying and painting) in which he expressed great concern about the state of the art, particularly criticising Bosse's book from 1665 [On the practices of geometrical planes and perspectives] and previous publications... Huret claimed that his book should be seen as a contribution to the education of the young, especially to teaching them useful rules for drawing perspective... Huret was well read and discussed books on other subjects than perspective. Naturally enough these included general works on painting, but also Desargues's and Pascal's works on projective geometry... Among the more productive passages in Huret's book one can find a presentation of the construction and use of an angle scale. He also dealt with a point most authors avoided, namely the use of scaled lengths in perspective constructions. In this connection he presented the technique for applying a reduced distance in a distance point construction - without reducing the actual distance - that 'sGravesande applied later ... Huret may have been searching for a closer link between perspective and projective geometry. It also seems he had some doubts concerning perspective th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Penn, William
[Dublin?], 1670. 38pp. plus errata. Small quarto. Modern red calf. Evenly age-toned, a bit darker in page margins. About very good. An early anti-Catholic treatise by William Penn, and an example of the excitability of the young Quaker. While in Ireland in the winter of 1669-70, Penn found a work by Christopher Davenport called AN EXPLANATION OF THE ROMAN- CATHOLICK BELIEF. Fearing that Catholicism might find a ready foothold in Ireland, Penn dashed off the present work, which was first published in Ireland sometime in early 1670, and then in a second edition in London in 1671. He takes up ten tenets of the Catholic church and uses Scripture to demolish those beliefs. Ultimately, Penn feels that Catholics cannot be trusted because their faith proclaims that it cannot accept heretics. Later, as he developed a stronger embrace of religious toleration and freedom of conscience, Penn would moderate his views. OCLC locates only seven copies. A scarce early work by the future founder of Pennsylvania, and an unusual espousal of religious intolerance on his part. BRONNER & FRASER, PENN BIBLIOGRAPHY 7A. SMITH, FRIENDS' BOOKS II:286. Cellarius / Loon, van Andreas
Artist: Cellarius / Loon van Andreas; issued in: Amsterdam; date: 1670 - - technic: Copper print; colorit: original colored; condition: Perfect condition; size in cm : 44 x 52 - description: Striking map of the famous Harmonia Macrocosmica atlas of Andreas Cellarius, also called the Cellarius Atlas. Cellarius demonstrates the Ptolemaic theory of epicycles. The epicycles theory addressed a problem that arose from the assumption that if the Earth was the center of the universe, then the circuit of the planets should be of a steady one-directional, circular progress. Observation showed, however, that the orbital progress of the planets was in fact irregular, and from these observations arose the ancient theory of epicycles illustrated here. - Vita of the artist: "Andreas Cellarius (c. 1596 ? 1665) was a Dutch-German cartographer, best known for his Harmonia Macrocosmica of 1660, a major star atlas, published by Johannes Janssonius in Amsterdam.Andreas Cellarius, illustration of the Copernican system, from the Harmonia Macrocosmica 1660.He was born in Neuhausen, now a part of Worms, and was educated in Heidelberg. The Protestant Cellarius may have left Heidelberg at the onset of the Thirty years war in 1618 or in 1622 when the city came in Catholic hands. His activities are unclear at this time but based on his later works it is conjectured he spent time in Poland and may have even worked as a military engineer there. In 1625 he married Catharina Elt(e)mans in Amsterdam, where he worked as school master of a Latin School. After a brief stay in The Hague, the family moved to Hoo … [Click Below for Full Description]

Chronik von Nürnberg, Mörder, Huren, Henker, Juden, Monster, fahrendes Volk, Exekutionen etc. -:
… [Click Below for Full Description]
