Francisci (von Finx), Erasmus.
Nuremberg, Endter, 1670. - Folio. With title-page printed in red and black with the Endters' woodcut device, engraved architectural frontispiece, full-page engraved coat of arms of the dedicatee Johann Georg III (1647-1691), engraved dedication, and 50 engraved illustration plates (2 double-page and some with more than 1 illustration). Further with woodcut tailpieces, woodcut figural and decorated initials, and headpieces built up from cast fleurons. Contemporary vellum. First and only edition of a magnificently illustrated encyclopaedic survey of the cultures, traditions, manners and customs of non-European peoples, notably the Japanese and the Chinese. The work is not arranged geographically but divided into six books successively treating (natural) history, politics and warfare, religious ceremonies, arts and sciences, hunting, and funeral traditions. The plates include depictions of a Japanese crucifixion, a lady from Nagasaki, Chinese temples, Brazilian cannibals, Japanese wrestlers and musicians, Indians from Florida, several torture methods, a tower cemetery, etc. - Erasmus Francisci (or Finx) was a prolific polyhistor and is considered one of the most influential figures of the German Baroque period. The present work carries on from his 1668 Ost- und West-Indischer wie auch Sinesischer Lust- und Stats-Garten, which was also arranged by topics rather than regions. - In very good condition. Binding slightly soiled and with a chip at the head of the spine. Longhi, Gioseffo.
1670. 945 x 620 mm. Engraved view on 2 sheets joined, letterpress text pasted below (4 columns in Italian, 4 columns in Latin: "Descrittione del gran Cairo [...] Cairi quae olim Babylon") with publisher's imprints. Watermark Panzano. Unrecorded in the standard bibliographies and without counterpart in western libraries, this unique, large-scale view of Cairo reflects the economic and cultural effervescence of the second-largest city in the Empire: under Ottoman rule since 1517 and having expanded south and west from its nucleus around the Citadel, Cairo in the latter half of the 17th century was second only to Constantinople. The Ottoman influence may be discerned in the people's clothing in the foreground as well as in the city's architecture. On the river Nile, the map depicts numerous trade boats and sailors. To the left are soldiers battling as part of a tournament; on the right are the Sphinx (wearing a necklace!) and the famous pyramids of Giza: those of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, as well as the smaller pyramids. The centre of the city shows numerous mosques and gardens. The letterpress text pasted under the engraving provides mostly historical and geographical information (in Italian and Latin). - Longhi's panorama seems to draw various aspects from previous works to create its own original representation of the Egyptian city. Indeed, it bears some resemblance to Braun and Hogenberg's 1572 "Cairos, quae olim Babylon, Aegypti maxima urbs", published in their famous "Civitates orbis terrarum". There are also similarities with Donato Bertelli's "La gran città del Cair … [Click Below for Full Description]

Roberts, A.
1670. Small 8vo. (8), 252 [but 254], (2) pp. (includes final leaf of ads). Contemporary calf, rebacked. First edition of this extraordinary account of an Englishman's capture by Barbary pirates and subsequent adventures as a slave in Algeria. The narrative is framed as an authentic journal of a deceased traveller, prepared for the press by a friend of the departed. Through this mechanism the reader is taken into a proto-novelistic fantasy, albeit one that must have been informed by genuine experience of Eastern travel. As a slave under numerous masters the author tricks his way variously into employment as the cook to the King of Algiers, is then demoted to Keeper of the King's Bath and secretly fathers a daughter with one of the King's wives. After an unsuccessful stint as a gardener's assistant he journeys in the service of an officer, collecting tribute money with the Algerian army and offers his services as an advisor to the Ottoman governor of Tlemcen. He recounts observations on the various peoples encountered and their customs and peculiarities, marvelling at flying serpents, lions and ostriches and skirmishing with an army of Arabs. Against a backdrop of mosques, minarets and palaces, the narrative is peppered with anecdotes of meetings with Barbary pirates, European renegados, and dalliances with alluring women of the Maghreb. - The author takes particular relish in recounting the details of his sexual adventures: "the women in this country keep much at home, but their minds and affections are more wandering abroad, because they are so recluse; whereas if they had … [Click Below for Full Description]

RvdH002.

First edition. - 1670 1ed Enchiridion of Epictetus Greek Latin Stoic Philosophy Tablet Cebes “What upsets people is not things themselves but their perception about the things.” Epictetus, Enchiridion An early 18th-century printing of Abraham van Berkel’s Greek & Latin translation of the famous Enchiridion by Epictetus. The original Greek advice manual focused on the philosophy of daily life – primarily that one should accept their own fate. The Enchiridion is famous for holding authority in both Christian and Pagan circles, few books can claim such a feat. This 1670 first edition is rare and popular. Caesar, Julius; Daniel Elzevir, Arnoldus Montanus and Joseph Juste Scaliger
Amstelodami [Amsterdam]: Ex officina Elzeviriana (Daniel and Louis Elzevir), 1670. Later printing. Leather bound. Very good minus. 918pp. Octavo [20 cm] Rebound in modern red leather with red cloth over boards, four raised bands and gilt ruled borders on the spine. New endsheets and flyleaves. Publisher's red stain on the text block edges. "Julius Caesar, Elzevir, 1670" stamped in gilt on the backstrip. Engraved title page. Folding map at the front. Four illustrated plates. The bottom edge of the text block has a small nicked area (roughly 3/4" in diameter), resulting in barely negligible losses to the bottom margins of pp. 625-862. The first original blank leaf has a discreet embossed ownership stamp, and a brief contemporary notation on the reverse. The first few pages at the front and rear have worm holing at the edges. There is also a bit of worm holing in the margins of the map. The title page has a handful of minor markings in pen. The pages are lightly foxed, and they often have light tidemarks in the margins. The tide marks, still light, get larger throughout the last quarter of the book, covering at least half of the pages. There is a large loss from the fore edge margin of the illustrated plate at p. 530 (not affecting the image). A reissue of the 1661 edition.

Longhi, Gioseffo.
Bologna, Longhi, 1670. - 945 x 620 mm. Engraved view on 2 sheets joined, letterpress text pasted below (4 columns in Italian, 4 columns in Latin: "Descrittione del gran Cairo [.] Cairi quae olim Babylon") with publisher's imprints. There are also similarities with Donato Bertelli's "La gr … [Click Below for Full Description]
