BORELLI, Giovanni Alfonso.
Bologna: Dominici Ferri, 1670. First edition. A fine copy of one of the most important early treatises on fluid mechanics. In this work Borelli "argues against positive levity, discusses the Torricellian experiment, takes up siphons, pumps, and the nature of fluidity, tries to understand the expansion of water while freezing, and deals with fermentation and other chemical processes" (DSB). "This work is important as the first treatise on capillarity, and for containing important investigations on the action of capillary tubes, in which the author, inter alia, formulates the law that the height of the ascent of liquids in capillary tubes is inversely proportional to their diameters. His investigations also led him to the conclusion that the phenomenon of capillarity is independent of the pressure of air" (Zeitlinger in Sotheran, First supplement, 3060). "[De motionibus naturalibus] was well known among Borelli's contemporaries and is quoted by Varignon in his Projet d'une nouvelle mechanique. It is reviewed in the first volume of Philosophical Transactions Abridged, where it is praised for its thoroughness, for the discussion of Torricelli's experiments and for Borelli's stand against Descartes on the nature of fluidity" (Roberts & Trent). Borelli regarded this work, together with his De vi percussionis (1667), as necessary preparation for his masterpiece, De motum animalium (1680-81), on which he had worked since the early 1660s. The work appeared in three subsequent editions, testifying to its influence. "While On the Force of Percussion laid out some foundational proposit … [Click Below for Full Description]

1670. Catchpenny print showing the life of Jan de Wasser who takes over the household chores of his wife, such as cooking, cleaning and taking care of the children. His story was one of the most popular subjects depicted in children’s prints, having been printed in many forms and versions by publishers such as De Groot, Van der Putte, Noman, Brepols and Glenisson. Jan de Wasser is primarily known as the man who takes on women’s work, but he also was the typical example of a henpecked husband. The stories of Jan and Griet go back to the theme of the fight for the trousers (‘Strijd om de broek’), where the woman changes her skirt and apron for her husband’s trousers. The topic of Women’s power over men (‘Weibermacht’) has been a popular topic in visual art since the 13th century, having been depicted by artists like Israhel van Meckenem and Lucas van Leyden. Probably, seventeenth-century farces such as Cornelis de Bie’s Jan Goethals en Griet syn wyf from 1670 led to the Jan-de-Wasser story taking its definitive form. This prints has given the story a twist, presenting Jan de Wasser’s unhappy marriage as a warning for marrying too soon.Deventer, J. de Lange (1818 - 1845); via Mindermann & co., Amsterdam, whose address is mentioned on the print: ‘Te Amsterdam, bij Mindermann en Comp., in de Berstraat (sic)’; numbered ‘N. 6.’ in the upper right corner. 24 woodcut illustrations (each ca. 45 x 57 mm) on paper; hand coloured in orange and yellow; under each image a 2-line verse; total: 425 x 340 mm; Pro Patria watermark; folded three times, worn at the folds and restored on verso wi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Nicht weniger ist dies der Fall mit der Entwicklung der menschlichen Frucht und der dabei stattfindenden Osteogenese, welche beide durch K. genau studirt, beschrieben und abgebildet sind" (Hirsch). "In Kerckring's studies of fetal bone development, contained in the second part of this work, he stated correctly that only a little of the skeleton can be found during the second month, and that the skeleton develops through a transformation of membrane into cartilage into bone. He was also the first to describe 'Kerckring's ossicle', an occasional center of ossification in the occipital bone. The first part of the 'Spicilegium anatomicum' contains Kerckring's description of the 'valvulae conniventes' ('valves of Kerckring') in the small intestine, which had previously been described by Falloppio" (Norman Library 1209). - In Monte Chiaro, Appresso Gio. Batt. Lucio Vero (Amsterdam, J. Blaeu), 1670. Two parts in one volume. (48), 335, (1) pp.; (24), 359, (1) pp. 12mo. Contemporary vellum, handwritten title to spine. Vinciana 666 & 667 for the 1655 (first) edition and the 1671 edition; Melzi, iii, p. 233. Second Italian edition and very rare: one usually finds the third edition printed by Blaeu in 1671. An important and rare biography on the prince and condottiero Cesare Borgia, who was named Duke of Valentinois by the French King Louis XII, and this title along with his former position as Cardinal of Valencia explains the nickname "Valentino".Cesare Borgia was greatly admired by Niccolò Machiavelli, who met the Duke on a diplomatic mission in his function as Secretary of the Florentine Chancellery. Machiavelli was at Borgia's court from October 7, 1502 through January 18, 1503. During this time he wrote regular dispatches to his superiors in Florence, many of which have survived and are published in Machiavelli's Collected Works. Machiavelli used many of Borgia's exploits and tactics as examples in The Prince and advised politicians to imitate Borgia. Two episodes were particularly impressive to Machiavelli: the method by which Borgia pacified the Romagna, which Machiavelli describes in chapter VII of The Prince, and Borgia's assassination of his captains on New Year's Eve of 1503 in Senigallia.Upon its first publication, in 1655, the book was almost immediately forbidden and circulated in manuscript versions. The letters G.L. in the title refer to Gregori Leti and in fact Leti has been consi … [Click Below for Full Description]
