London: 1670. For sale is an exceptionally rare volume indeed, being THE ADVICE OF Charles the Fifth, Emperor of GERMANY, AND KING OF SPAIN, To his Son Philip the Second; Upon his Resignation of the Crown of SPAIN to his said Son. LONDON, Printed for H. Mortlock, at the Sign of the White Hart in Westminster-Hall. 1670. 163p.p, collated as complete. Small 4to. Bound in full contemporary sheep, with tooling in blind to the boards. Original plain endpapers. Externally it remains in good order for it's age; extraneous rubbing and bumping, but the hinges firm and intact. Internally, save the odd spot and occasional toning, this is a delightfully clean volume throughout. Research on the ESTC shows only a handful of copies of this text, held in some of the world's most prestigious libraries; The Bodleain and The British Library, to name but two. Overall, this is a discovery most rare and we are unable to locate another example anywhere on the open market, or indeed a record of one ever selling. Hence, it is an opportunity not to be missed, and it will grace any collection. [Attributes: First Edition]

SPLENDID CEREMONIES].
1670. Original ink and ink-wash drawings of 5 triumphal arches and 3 catafalques (elaborate funeral biers), plus an additional line drawing of a 4th catafalque on the back of one leaf, all erected at various locations in the city of Siena in Tuscany: in the cathedral, in the piazza before the cathedral, in Palazzo Piccolomini and at the Porta Santuccio. The drawings are richly decorated with sculptures, bas-reliefs, columns, cartouches, vases, candelabras and decorations, including Christian and classical figures and putti. The five triumphal arches were all erected for the occasion of the entry of Alessandro Zondadari (1670-1745), the new archbishop of Sienna on 11 August 1715. He was the fourth and last son of Ansano Zondadari and Agnese di Mario Chigi. She was a niece of Pope Alexander VII and heir of her brother Cardinal Flavio Chigi, one of the most influential and powerful men in Siena. One catafalque was erected for the funeral of Alessandro Zondadari's older brother Marc' Antonio Zondadari (1658-1722), Grand Master of the Sovereign Military and Hospitaller Order of Knights of St. John of Jerusalem and Malta. Flavio Chigi went to great lengths to advance the prestige and power of his Zondadari relatives, paying many thousands of scudi to the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo III de' Medici (1642-1723) for hereditary titles he could pass on. It is therefore no surprise that the Zondadari arches and catafalques are accompanied by catafalques for the Grand Duke himself and his wife Margarita Luisa d'Orléans (1645-1721), daughter of Gaston, Duke of Orléans and brother of Kin … [Click Below for Full Description]

1670. First edition. 46 engraved maps & plates (some folding), and numerous illustrations. Folio. Contemporary mottled calf, rebacked, with the original richly gilt back laid down. [xii], 768pp. London, Tho. Johnson, Ogilby only turned his attention to cartography at the age of sixty-six and became Royal Cosmographer in 1671. This is the first volume of a projected atlas of the world, he also published volumes on America, Japan, China and Asia. The work is however basically a translation of Dapper, whom he acknowledges in his entertaining preface, though it does contain some additional observations. Ogilby would find lasting fame with his publication of the first 'road atlas' of Britain in 1675. Provenance: The Earl of Breadalbaine with his C18th armorial bookplate, thereafter with the Stowe Library label. title. Theal, p220. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

PIGNORIA, Lorenzo
Amstelodami: Sumptibus Andreae Frisii, 1670. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Lorenzo Pignoria's 'Mensa Isiaca' is known to be the first significant study on Egyptology and the history of Ancient Egypt. The name of the work comes from the most famous Egyptian artifact named the Mensa Isiaca, a bronze tablet with Egyptian hieroglyphs on it. Pignoria, after examining the tablet, believed that it was a piece describing Egyptian ritual ceremonies including human sacrifice! Beginning with the 1669 third edition, this work was famously printed and published with another of Pignoria's works -'Magnae Deum Matris Idaeae' - a treatise on the cult of roman gods Cybele and Attis. These works include 37 impressive illustrations of coins, gods, mummies, artifacts, and much more.

Portugal - Frederick de Wit, 1670
1670. FRAAIE ANTIEKE KAART VAN PORTUGAL "Novissima Regnorum Portugalliae et Algabriae". [Click Below for Full Description]

1670. The French military engineer Guillaume le Vasseur de Beauplan (1595-1685), completed in the first half of the 17th century the extensive survey of the Ukraine commissioned by the king of Poland Ladislaus IV. Apart from the extensive map of the Ukraine which was finished in 1639, De Beauplan worked for a long time on a detailed map in six sheets that was only finished in 1651. Joan Blaeu (1598-1673) reduced the size of this map to a series of four separate maps. We are pleased to offer the complete 4 map set by Blaeu Family. All maps have original hand-color. We struggled to find the last time these four maps were offered together. 1 x 1

These short sketches were on politicians, priests, and poets alike - Henry Wotton, John Donne, Richard Hooker, and George Herbert. This 1670 edition was the first edition of this book - the first edition to include all four 'lives' in one book. The works themselves were published individually over the previous 30 years; however, these works were popular throughout Europe, that Newcomb and Marriott published them together in 1670. HOORN, Carolus van
Coloniae Agrippinae: viduam Joannis Busaei, 1670. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. First published in 1670, 'Cornucopiae Concionum Sacrarum' is a collection of sermons preached by Augustinian preacher Karl van Horn. This sermon-series includes lectures on various Catholic liturgies and sacraments, including discussions on the Virgin Mary and the Immaculate Conception. 1670 editions of this book are notoriously difficult to locate, let alone find for sale. This first edition is bound in impressive vellum with functioning clasps. [Attributes: First Edition]
