London: Tho. Newcomb for Richard Marriott, 1670. First collected edition. Nineteenth-century owner's ticket to front pastedown; ink inscriptions, sizeable chip to p. 9-10 of Donne with loss of text; small chip to B4 (p. 15-16) of Hooker; F1 (p. 65-66 of Donne) missing; Hooker mispagination from 157ff.; generally soiled, with occasional small chip; endsheets discolored from binding leather; covers worn, backstrip partly separated.. 8vo, [2], [xii], 88, 79, 140 (i.e. 120), 104pp; contemporary panelled calf. Walton's Lives, short biographies of notable poets and clergymen, appeared serially and were here collected together for the first time in a single volume. The life of Sanderson was written in 1678 and did not appear together with these four until 1825, well after Walton's death in 1683. As with other copies of this edition, this one bears several small ink corrections to the text believed to be by Walton himself.

FERMAT, Pierre de]. DIOPHANTUS of Alexandria
Toulouse: Bernard Bosc, 1670. First edition, and an unusually tall copy in contemporary binding, of Fermat's annotated edition of Diophantus' 'Arithmetica'. This is the first printing of Fermat's contributions to the theory of numbers, of which he is the undisputed founder, including his famous statement of 'Fermat's last theorem'. Since most of Fermat's work in number theory remained unpublished in his lifetime, "it was neither understood nor appreciated until Euler revived it and initiated the line of continuous research that culminated in the work of Gauss and Kummer in the early nineteenth century" (DSB). Fermat showed little interest in publishing his work, which remained confined to his correspondence, personal notes, and to marginal jottings in his copy of the 1621 editio princeps, edited by Claude Bachet, of Diophantus' 'Arithmetica'. Fermat's marginalia included not only arguments against some of Bachet's conclusions, but also new problems inspired by Diophantus. After his death, Fermat's eldest son Clement-Samuel published his father's marginalia in this new edition. Most famous of the 48 observations by Fermat included here is the tantalizing note that appears on fol. H3r "regarding the impossibility of finding a positive integer n > 2 for which the equation x^n + y^n = z^n holds true for the positive integers x, y, and z" (Norman). Fermat noted that he had discovered a "truly marvellous demonstration" of this proposition, but that the margin was too narrow to transcribe it. This simple statement became known as the single most difficult problem in mathematics, a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Abraham Wolfgang, 1670. [Click Below for Full Description]

Wing describes this as an edition; Pine-Coffin as a variant. The collations of the two issues are identical. Pine-Coffin, Bibliography of British and American Travel in Italy, 635; Wing L-465. A few smudges and light stains in the text and on the edges; very good copy.. 12mo, 2 volumes in 1, 17th century calf restored by Philip Dusel, gilt lettering. Engraved title. A seminal travel guide to Italy rich in detail about architecture, art, and all the important Italian cities and towns by Catholic priest Richard Lassels (1603-1668), who toured there several times between 1635 and 1665 as a tutor and governor for young English men and women. Lassels' account "became the standard guidebook to Italy . . . and the model for a generation of tourists. Not only did Lassels coin the term 'the Grand Tour' to describe these travels, but he also did much to establish the standard itineraries and the focus on connoisseurship which characterized the great age of the Grand Tour in the eighteenth century" - John Marciari, The Grand Tour, Beinecke Library, 1998.

Pascal, Blaise
Guillaume Desprez, 1670. First edition, second issue (the first issue of 1669 - virtually unobtainable - is known by 2 copies only, both in France); 12mo, pp. [82], 365, [21]; printer's device on title page, engraved headpiece, woodcut ornaments; 19th-century full brown levant by the Paris binder Trautz-Bauzonnet, gilt-lettering direct on spine, gilt turn-ins, a.e.g.; very lightly scuffed, else fine. Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) was a French mathematician, physicist, and religious philosopher. He laid the foundation for the modern theory of probabilities, formulated what came to be known as Pascal's principle of pressure, and propagated a religious doctrine that taught the experience of God through the heart rather than through reason. The subject of endless controversy, these fragmentary meditations on faith and reason influenced generations of thinkers, both sceptics and believers alike, making this work a fundamental text in the history of western thought and literature. Printing and the Mind of Man 152; Brunet IV, 398;. [Attributes: First Edition]

PASCAL, Blaise.
Paris: Guillaume Desprez, 1670. Paris: Guillaume Desprez,, 1670. Contemporary red morocco Duodecimo (133 x 75 mm). Contemporary red morocco, spine lettered and tooled in gilt, gilt French fillets and cornerpieces to covers, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Only 6 of the initial 39 pages present, lacking final 10 page index, but the text of Pensées itself is complete. Chip to head of spine, tiny markings to covers, stain to front free endpaper, small wormhole to initial leaves, a few blemishes to contents, a few page corners slightly creased, closely cropped at times mildly encroaching on margin notes, scratch to p. 233. A highly attractive copy. The true second edition of Pensées, near-identical to the first with the same title page, distinguished by the correction of errors and the final section being misnumbered. The first edition was also published in 1670, other than two known copies with a 1669 title page. A pirated edition preceded this second edition, with a third edition, claiming to be the second, following this. Gathered from Pascal's papers and published after his death by his nephew, Pensées constitutes a collection of fragments serving as a vast apology for Christianity. Its inchoate nature has left to three centuries of debate as to its meaning, yet even so, it is firmly established as one of the central texts in the canon of western philosophy, and it is one of very few 17th-century theological works which are still widely read. Elements of the text have entered common parlance, including Pascal's Wager, a defence of the rationality of belief … [Click Below for Full Description]

Octavae Festorum Ottavario Romano Legatura originale Giansenista in pelle di squalo Chiesa Cattolica 1670, Nicola Pezzana Prima edizione: No Formato: In Ottavi (15-23cm ) Tipo di rilegatura: Altro Condizione: Ottime, solo alcuni piccoli difetti Pagine: 264 Illustrazioni: Incisione in antiporta Codice articolo: 51-210715-680LIB Descrizione OCTAVA FESTORUM Hoc est Lectiones Secundi et tertii Nocturni Singulis diebus recitandae infra Octavas Festorum. [Click Below for Full Description]
