First edition of this authoritative work on China in the 17th century. This is Dapper’s richly illustrated account of the second and third embassies to China by the Dutch East India Company. His book describes the Dutch expeditions to China - Admiral Balthasar Bort’s expedition along the Fujian coast in 1663 and 1664 and Pieter van Hoorn’s embassy to Beijing in 1666-1668 - and then proceeds to give a detailed background on the country, putting together information from the best sources available at the time, from Ricci and Martini, to Schall and the Spanish Jesuit Adriano de Las Cortes. It contains an extensive description of China, its government, religion, customs, art, science, natural history, etc. and brings together many important records of Dutch relations with China from 1662 to 1664. The work still represents an invaluable source for all aspects of 17th century Chinese life, offering a wea … [Click Below for Full Description]

GUALDO PRIORATO (Galeazzo)
[Click Below for Full Description]

TOMASI, TH.
- In Monte Chiaro, Appresso Gio. Batt. Lucio Vero (Amsterdam, J. Blaeu), 1670. Two parts in one volume. (48), 335, (1) pp.; (24), 359, (1) pp. 12mo. Contemporary vellum, handwritten title to spine. Vinciana 666 & 667 for the 1655 (first) edition and the 1671 edition; Melzi, iii, p. 233. Second Italian edition and very rare: one usually finds the third edition printed by Blaeu in 1671. An important and rare biography on the prince and condottiero Cesare Borgia, who was named Duke of Valentinois by the French King Louis XII, and this title along with his former position as Cardinal of Valencia explains the nickname "Valentino".Cesare Borgia was greatly admired by Niccolò Machiavelli, who met the Duke on a diplomatic mission in his function as Secretary of the Florentine Chancellery. Machiavelli was at Borgia's court from October 7, 1502 through January 18, 1503. During this time he wrote regular dispatches to his superiors in Florence, many of which have survived and are published in Machiavelli's Collected Works. Machiavelli used many of Borgia's exploits and tactics as examples in The Prince and advised politicians to imitate Borgia. Two episodes were particularly impressive to Machiavelli: the method by which Borgia pacified the Romagna, which Machiavelli describes in chapter VII of The Prince, and Borgia's assassination of his captains on New Year's Eve of 1503 in Senigallia.Upon its first publication, in 1655, the book was almost immediately forbidden and circulated in manuscript versions. The letters G.L. in the title refer to Gregori Leti and in fact Leti has been consi … [Click Below for Full Description]

LUDWIG XIV. (1638-1715) König v. Frankreich u. Navarra:
Kupferstich v. Aubry b. Pet. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Hoen, Theodorus
Full vellum, browned. 8°, pag.: [20] 220. With two folding tables, a woodcut on the title page and numerous woodcut text illustations. Endpapers worn and waterstained throughout, small wormhole in lower margin, not affecting the text. Extremely rare edition of this curious and interesting tract on astrology by the Frisian surveyor Theodorus Hoen (?-1670), first printed in 1650, also by Gijsbert Sybes in Leeuwarden. The book is divided in two parts, each with 10 chapters. The first part gives a general survey of astrology, the second part is devoted to the prediction of the weather and natural phenomena like earthquakes, thunder and lightning etc. Especially in the first part Hoen displays his astro-medical ideas, as to his opinion astrology was of great importance for medical treatments. The appendix contains many geometrical and mathematical questions. Little is known about Hoen’s biography. From 1632 until his death in 1670 he lived in St. Annaparochie, working as surveyor and mapmaker. Probably he combined his daily, more down-to-earth work with popular astrological predictions and calculations for almanacs. In his Billandts Almanach for the year 1653 he clearly acknowledged the distinction between his two occupations: astronomy and astrology; the first being based on decent geometry and arithmetics, the latter - no less fundamental - focusing on the relation between earth, nature and humanity with the signs of the zodiac and the stars. From 1649 up to 1670 Hoen calculated almanacs, for which he was paid by the provincial authorities. They also rewarded Hoen wit … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Gebonden in half leer, (18)+616 pag., geillustreerd. C1029 Haitsma Mulier 228 a; Fruin, Verspr. Geschr. VII pag. 470 e.v.
