BORELLI GIOVANNI ALFONSO.
Reggio Calabria, Dominico Ferro, 1670. In-4°; 4 cc., 566 pp., 3 cc.; legatura antica in tutta pergamena (restauri al dorso, sguardie rinnovate). Firma cassata al frontespizio. Esemplare appartenuto al matematico napoletano Giovan Battista Caracciolo. Prima edizione. In quest'opera Borelli "argues against positive levity, discusses the Torricellian experiment, takes up siphons, pumps, and the nature of fluidity, tries to understand the expansion of water while freezing, and deals with fermentation and other chemical processes" (DSB). Riccardi I, 159-160. DSB II, pp. 304-314.

HURET, Gregoire.
Paris: chez l'autheur, 1670. Folio (373 × 253 mm). Contemporary mottled calf skilfully repaired, red speckled edges. A very good copy. Engraved allegorical plate by Huret, 8 folding diagrammatic plates. First edition, with an appealing near-contemporary French provenance: bookplate and ownership inscription of Hieronimus (Jérôme) Beausire. The Beausires were a famous French architectural dynasty - our Beausire may be Jérôme (1708-1761) architect and son of Jean Beausire, chief of public works in Paris under the Sun King and Louis XV. "The draughtsman and engraver Grégoire Huret (1610-1670) - an academician who was also close to the king - took over Bosse's lectures at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. In 1670, Huret published Optique de portraiture et peinture (Optics of portraying and painting) in which he expressed great concern about the state of the art, particularly criticising Bosse's book from 1665 [On the practices of geometrical planes and perspectives] and previous publications. Huret claimed that his book should be seen as a contribution to the education of the young, especially to teaching them useful rules for drawing perspective. Huret was well read and discussed books on other subjects than perspective. Naturally enough these included general works on painting, but also Desargues's and Pascal's works on projective geometry. Among the more productive passages in Huret's book one can find a presentation of the construction and use of an angle scale. He also dealt with a point most authors avoided, namely the use of scaled lengths in perspective const … [Click Below for Full Description]

Garmann Christian Friedrich
Christiani Kirchneri - Joh. Gabr. [Click Below for Full Description]

TOMASI, TH.
In Monte Chiaro, Appresso Gio. Batt. Lucio Vero (Amsterdam, J. Blaeu), 1670. Two parts in one volume. (48), 335, (1) pp.; (24), 359, (1) pp. 12mo. Contemporary vellum, handwritten title to spine. Vinciana 666 & 667 for the 1655 (first) edition and the 1671 edition; Melzi, iii, p. 233. Second Italian edition and very rare: one usually finds the third edition printed by Blaeu in 1671. An important and rare biography on the prince and condottiero Cesare Borgia, who was named Duke of Valentinois by the French King Louis XII, and this title along with his former position as Cardinal of Valencia explains the nickname "Valentino".Cesare Borgia was greatly admired by Niccolò Machiavelli, who met the Duke on a diplomatic mission in his function as Secretary of the Florentine Chancellery. Machiavelli was at Borgia's court from October 7, 1502 through January 18, 1503. During this time he wrote regular dispatches to his superiors in Florence, many of which have survived and are published in Machiavelli's Collected Works. Machiavelli used many of Borgia's exploits and tactics as examples in The Prince and advised politicians to imitate Borgia. Two episodes were particularly impressive to Machiavelli: the method by which Borgia pacified the Romagna, which Machiavelli describes in chapter VII of The Prince, and Borgia's assassination of his captains on New Year's Eve of 1503 in Senigallia.Upon its first publication, in 1655, the book was almost immediately forbidden and circulated in manuscript versions. The letters G.L. in the title refer to Gregori Leti and in fact Leti has been conside … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: Printed by H.L. & R.B. for T. Basset, 1670. Epicurus.
H. Herringman at the Blew Anchor, 1670. A beautiful example of => a somber binding by one of the Queens' Binders encases this third edition of => the first translation into English of Epicurus's Morals, first published in 1656. Probably the Queens' Binder B, arguably the best artisan of four Restoration binders employed by Catherine of Braganza and Mary of Modena, fashioned this elegant blind-tooled black morocco binding, each board bearing the B binder's distinctive all-over design of "four-petalled conventional flower[s] springing from a pair of leaves" (Nixon, p. 100), framed by drawer handle motifs, acorns, grapes, and pointellé decoration. The spine is blind-tooled with raised bands and the title gilt on a red leather label; the endpapers are marbled and the edges black (faded). The text is printed in roman and italic, ruled in red throughout, with sidenotes inset within the red ruled border. An => engraved portrait of Epicurus faces the title-page. The translator, Walter Charleton (1620-1707), was named physician-in-ordinary to Charles I shortly after graduating from Oxford, and published numerous books on natural philosophy as well as physiology and antiquity. To the various writings by the philosopher Epicurus (341-270) included herein, Charleton added an Apology for Epicurus, building a Christian framework for the following chapters. Provenance: A later pencil inscription on the front free endpaper indicates this book may have once been in the library at => Dyrham Park, a 17th-century English mansion now overseen by the National Trust.

PASCAL (Blaise)
Tchemerzine-Scheler V, 72; Rochebilière, 1122; Goyet, A.e.
