LUDWIG XIV. (1638-1715) König v. Frankreich u. Navarra:
Kupferstich v. Aubry b. Pet. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Hoen, Theodorus
Full vellum, browned. 8°, pag.: [20] 220. With two folding tables, a woodcut on the title page and numerous woodcut text illustations. Endpapers worn and waterstained throughout, small wormhole in lower margin, not affecting the text. Extremely rare edition of this curious and interesting tract on astrology by the Frisian surveyor Theodorus Hoen (?-1670), first printed in 1650, also by Gijsbert Sybes in Leeuwarden. The book is divided in two parts, each with 10 chapters. The first part gives a general survey of astrology, the second part is devoted to the prediction of the weather and natural phenomena like earthquakes, thunder and lightning etc. Especially in the first part Hoen displays his astro-medical ideas, as to his opinion astrology was of great importance for medical treatments. The appendix contains many geometrical and mathematical questions. Little is known about Hoen’s biography. From 1632 until his death in 1670 he lived in St. Annaparochie, working as surveyor and mapmaker. Probably he combined his daily, more down-to-earth work with popular astrological predictions and calculations for almanacs. In his Billandts Almanach for the year 1653 he clearly acknowledged the distinction between his two occupations: astronomy and astrology; the first being based on decent geometry and arithmetics, the latter - no less fundamental - focusing on the relation between earth, nature and humanity with the signs of the zodiac and the stars. From 1649 up to 1670 Hoen calculated almanacs, for which he was paid by the provincial authorities. They also rewarded Hoen wit … [Click Below for Full Description]

¶ Dinaux, Les sociétés badines bachiques I.p.320 -Vicaire 272 - Du Roure Analecta Biblion II.p.310 - Oberlé Fastes de Bacchus n°496 - Brunet III.1255.

Longhi, Gioseffo.
1670. 945 x 620 mm. Engraved view on 2 sheets joined, letterpress text pasted below (4 columns in Italian, 4 columns in Latin: "Descrittione del gran Cairo [...] Cairi quae olim Babylon") with publisher's imprints. Watermark Panzano. Unrecorded in the standard bibliographies and without counterpart in western libraries, this unique, large-scale view of Cairo reflects the economic and cultural effervescence of the second-largest city in the Empire: under Ottoman rule since 1517 and having expanded south and west from its nucleus around the Citadel, Cairo in the latter half of the 17th century was second only to Constantinople. The Ottoman influence may be discerned in the people's clothing in the foreground as well as in the city's architecture. On the river Nile, the map depicts numerous trade boats and sailors. To the left are soldiers battling as part of a tournament; on the right are the Sphinx (wearing a necklace!) and the famous pyramids of Giza: those of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, as well as the smaller pyramids. The centre of the city shows numerous mosques and gardens. The letterpress text pasted under the engraving provides mostly historical and geographical information (in Italian and Latin). - Longhi's panorama seems to draw various aspects from previous works to create its own original representation of the Egyptian city. Indeed, it bears some resemblance to Braun and Hogenberg's 1572 "Cairos, quae olim Babylon, Aegypti maxima urbs", published in their famous "Civitates orbis terrarum". There are also similarities with Donato Bertelli's "La gran città del Cair … [Click Below for Full Description]

RvdH002.

after Monogrammist IFL
- Wish card of Pentecost; Engraved frame with handwritten text. The wreath is a rough copy after that realized by Monogrammist IFL [see Rijksmuseumprentkabinet RP-P-OB-77.689], in same direction. Virgin Mary is kneeling in the center at the bottom of the page, surrounded by the apostles, all receiving the Holy Ghost in shape of a flame above their heads. The decoration continues on the sides with floreal motives closed above by two putti holding two branches. In the center a dove representing the Holy Ghost. Outside the frame on the bottom, portion of landscape with trees and bushes. The print is numbered above on the right: '66'. The text is a very nice exercise of calligraphy. The poem reads: 'Pinxter Digt / an Mijn / Seerwaarde Ouders / Alzoo nu elk van geest / . Broadside sheet . Etching and pen in brown ink on paper; total: 419 x 329 mm; signs of foldings and some very small tears along the margins, otherwise in very good conditions, reinforced on the verso in the middle and on the above margin.
