Arène Antoine [Antonius de Arena Provençalis] - Bolla Bartolomeo
Stampatus in stampatura stampatorum, s.l. [forse Francoforte], 1670. 2 opere unite editorialmente in 1 volume in-12 (150x95 mm.), pp. 191, (1). Fregio xilografico (pavone) al primo frontespizio. Elegante legatura di stile Luigi XVI in piena pelle marezzata, piatti incorniciati da bordura a dente di topo e a rotella, unghie decorate in oro, dorso liscio con anforette incise in oro e titolo inciso sempre in oro su tassello in marocchino rosso. Segnacolo serico azzurro. Ottimo esemplare. Küsel, Melchior I (1626-1681) after Baur, Johann Wilhelm (1607-1642)
View on the Canal Grande in Venice with some gondolas; gentlemen conversing in the foreground. On the right and on the left large palaces. Very cloudy sky. For this impression the title has been left out. It would have read: 'Canal Grando zu Venedig wa die Gondoli al Fresco fahren' [litterally translated:'Canal Grande where the gondolas can travel in a fresher temperature]. From a collection of prints published by Küsel in 1670, titled: 'Ioannis Guilielmi Baurn, Iconographia....' showing 'capricci' and views from Italian cities and statues.

DV1702-69) BAÑOS DE VELASCO Y AZEBEDO (Juan).
En Madrid, por Mateo de Espinosa y Arteaga, 1670. - in-4. Frontispice. 15ff. 359pp. 4ff. Palau, 23442. [Attributes: First Edition]

KIRCHER, Athanasius.
Amsterdam Jean Jansson à Waesberge, 1670. First edition in French, folio, [xiv], 367, [xii]pp., additional engraved title, engraved portrait, 2 folding maps, 23 engraved plates (3 folding) as per list, numerous engravings in the text, modern calf antique preserving old end-papers, a very good example. 'One of the most influential books in shaping the European conception of China in its day' (Löwendahl). 'Gathering his work from other members of the Society [of Jesuits], Kircher wrote one of the century's most influential treatises on China. His primary purpose was to establish the authenticity of the Nestorian monument discovered in Sian, and to that end he produced in print the original Chinese and Syriac inscriptions on the monument, the Chinese text in romanization, and finally a Latin translation and his explication of the Chinese and Syriac texts. In addition, Kircher included a sizeable description of China and other places in Asia. For example, in a section devoted to Christianity in China, he sketched all the old overland routes, including that of Grueber and d'Orville from Agra to Peking, as well as giving a description of Tibet. Following what he thought to be the spread of idolatry from the Near East to Persia, India, and finally to East Asia, Kircher described the religions of China, Japan, and India. There are several chapters on government, customs, geography, fauna, flora, and mechanical arts of China, and a very interesting scholarly discussion of the Chinese language. There is a long Chinese-Latin dictionary. Kircher's volume contains several beautiful pict … [Click Below for Full Description]

Longhi, Gioseffo.
Bologna, Longhi, [1670s]. 1065 x 578 mm. Cloth-backed engraved view on 2 sheets joined, letterpress text pasted below (4 columns in Italian: "Descrizione della Città di Alessandria d'Egitto") with publisher's imprint. Matted. Unrecorded in the standard bibliographies and without counterpart in western libraries: a unique, large-scale view of Alexandria as seen from the north. Formerly the most powerful city of the ancient world after Rome, Alexandria came under Ottoman rule in 1517 and subsequently lost much of its importance to the new port of Rashid (Rosette), 40 miles east, though it would regain some of its former prominence with the construction of the Mahmoudiyah Canal in 1807. In Longhi's engraving, the Ottoman influence may be discerned in the people's clothing as well as in the city's architecture. Within the city are several mosques; the ancient obelisks are shown crowned with crescents. On the river Nile, which flows through the city and underneath the walls, the view depicts numerous trade boats and sailors. Outside the walls lies Pompey's Pillar. The Italian letterpress text pasted under the engraving provides mostly historical and geographical information. - Longhi's panorama seems to draw various aspects from previous works to create its own original representation of the Egyptian city. The perspective is similar to that used in Pierre Belon's 1553 "Observations" and in Braun and Hogenberg's 1575 "Alexandria, Vetustissimum Aegypti Emporium, Amplissima Civitas", published in their famous "Civitates orbis terrarum", but also to that in Mallet's smaller, almost … [Click Below for Full Description]

The V quire has the concluding pp. 145-47 of the main text, Errata on V2verso and a remark to p. 100 on V3recto, verso is blank. A V4 could be expected, but is not there in any of the other 5 copies known. Contemporary blindtooled calf with gilt decoration on spine. outer hinges expertly repaired. The red letteringpiece only mentions the title of the work bound in front (the classic 1675 trilogy annotated by Barrow). A hidden book, only known to the owner of the library. Later endpapers. PROVENANCE: Turner Collection, its bookplate at fpep. Quite rare. John Locke's copy is at the BL, further OCLC has 6 copies in US libraries (UCLA, Harvard, Smithsonian, NYPL, Franklin & Marshall Col, and John Hopkins). Another copy is at the Un. of Sydney. "Barrow's geometrical formulations could well have been the basis on which systematized algorithmical calculus structures were subsequently erected" (DSB). B. was made first Lucasian professor of mathematics at Cambridge, but resigned his chair to Newton. Cantor suggests, that Newton reviewed this write-up of the lectures and quite heavily annotated them. DSB is more reluctant in describing the relation between Newton and his math teacher Barrow. BOUND AFTER: Archimedes, Apollonius of Perga and Theodosius as commented and illustrated by Barrow (1675), for description see book 33803. The price relates to the Sammelband.. First Edition.
