Unknown & Various
Assignees of John Bill & Christopher Barker. USED: for Detailed Condition see further down item description below. This pocket-size Holy Bible must have looked stunning when it was made some 340 years ago in the days of King Charles II, small in size the 1670's full-leather binding was very ornately decorated, hand-tooled in gilt, even the page edges were gilded and then tooled - it must have been made for a wealthy important client. Another way that this is not an average C17th Bible, this pocket-size single volume edition of the King James version of The Holy Bible, containing the Old Testament and the New Testament, commences with the complete "Book of Common Prayer" and finishes with "The Whole Book of Psalms in Metre", over 1,100 pages, all printed in very small type on fine paper to greatly reduce the bulk (just 6-1/4 inches x 3-1/2 inches x 2 inches thick approximately). Still in its original 17th century decorative binding, and unrestored, as you can see I haven't even risked polishing this during the years I've owned it. Printed in London by the Assignees of John Bill and Christopher/Robert Barker (printers to the King's Most Excellent Majesty), this single volume was bound inclusive of: a 1670 printing of The Book of Common Prayer (approximately 156 pages), a 1677 Holy Bible both Old and New Testament (no Apocrypha included, O.T. 674 pages approx & N.T. 204 pages approx), and a 1673 printing of The Whole Book of Psalms in Metre (93 pages), ending with a 3-page section of Private Prayers. The works of Cicero have been published in numerous languages and formats from as early as the mid-15th-century; in fact, his work 'De Officiis' was notable for being the third book ever printed. Garcilaso de la Vega
Gervais Clovzier, Paris, 1670. [12], 452; [12], 414 pp. Two volume set was rebound circa mid-1800's. Apparently trimmed during re-binding, but no loss of text. Pages are browned but are in excellent condition! Clean tight binding, very light scuffing to boards, First edition in French of the foundation work on the De Soto Expedition. One of the basic works on the De Soto Expedition, written by the half Spanish-half Peruvian historian of the New World Garcilaso de la Vega ("El Inca"), the first distinguished man of letters to be born there. De Soto, one of the most famous of the conquistadors, landed in Florida, near Tampa Bay, in the spring of 1539. He explored northward, attacking and enslaving local Indians until retaliatory strikes made his progress a running battle. In 1540 the expedition moved north and then west, crossing present-day Georgia, through central South Carolina and into western North Carolina. From here he crossed northern Alabama and Mississippi, where several major Indian attacks deprived the expedition of much of its equipment. In the spring of 1541 he crossed the Mississippi, and spent all of that year in present-day Arkansas. De Soto died the following year and was buried in the Mississippi to conceal his loss from the Indians; the survivors of the expedition rafted down the river and managed to sail small boats to Mexico. The De Soto expedition is thus the first major European exploration of much of the Southeast United States, as well as Arkansas. "This is a contemporary narrative of Hernando de Soto's Conquest of Florida, and the second to be publi … [Click Below for Full Description]

[SPLENDID CEREMONIES].
Original ink and ink-wash drawings of 5 triumphal arches and 3 catafalques (elaborate funeral biers), plus an additional line drawing of a 4th catafalque on the back of one leaf, all erected at various locations in the city of Siena in Tuscany: in the cathedral, in the piazza before the cathedral, in Palazzo Piccolomini and at the Porta Santuccio. The drawings are richly decorated with sculptures, bas-reliefs, columns, cartouches, vases, candelabras and decorations, including Christian and classical figures and putti. The five triumphal arches were all erected for the occasion of the entry of Alessandro Zondadari (1670-1745), the new archbishop of Sienna on 11 August 1715. He was the fourth and last son of Ansano Zondadari and Agnese di Mario Chigi. She was a niece of Pope Alexander VII and heir of her brother Cardinal Flavio Chigi, one of the most influential and powerful men in Siena. One catafalque was erected for the funeral of Alessandro Zondadari's older brother Marc' Antonio Zondadari (1658-1722), Grand Master of the Sovereign Military and Hospitaller Order of Knights of St. John of Jerusalem and Malta. Flavio Chigi went to great lengths to advance the prestige and power of his Zondadari relatives, paying many thousands of scudi to the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo III de' Medici (1642-1723) for hereditary titles he could pass on. It is therefore no surprise that the Zondadari arches and catafalques are accompanied by catafalques for the Grand Duke himself and his wife Margarita Luisa d'Orléans (1645-1721), daughter of Gaston, Duke of Orléans and brother of King Loui … [Click Below for Full Description]

HOOKE, Robert.
1670; 1666], [London. A very rare document related to the Great Fire of London written and signed by the great polymath Robert Hooke (1635-1703), with an equally rare separately-issued map showing the destruction caused by the fire. Starting at a bakery on Pudding Lane sometime after midnight on September 2, 1666, The Great Fire of London consumed over 13,000 houses, as well as numerous churches (including St. Paul?s cathedral) and other buildings. Charles II sought to rebuild as soon as possible to limit unrest and possible rebellion and called for plans from Robert Hooke, John Evelyn, Christopher Wren, and others. Hooke was appointed Surveyor of the City of London and, with Wren, was the chief architect for its rebuilding. As Surveyor Hooke was the arbiter of disputes erupting out of the staking-out process whereby party walls had been altered or streets widened. The present document is a report on such a dispute, between William Sanders (or Saunders) Draper and John Rowly Skinner over the rebuilding of their shop and residence on Ludgate Hill within the burnt district. Autograph documents by Hooke are extremely rare, with only two examples on the market in the last quarter century: Hooke?s manuscript notebook recording proceedings of the Royal Society (sold by private treaty to the Royal Society by Bonham's in 2006 for a reported £1,000,000) and a signed document being a King's Warrant for a patent for Hooke's watches with springs (sold by Bloomsbury Auctions for £23,100 in 1991). The present autograph document is accompanied by an important map of London following the f … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lisbon: perfect for collectors (first 3 pages are copies) "Os Lusiadas / do grande Luis de Camoens, princepe dos poetas de Hespanha ; com os argumentos do Licenciado Ioaõ Franco Barretto, & index de todos os Nomes proprios ; offerecidas ao Illustrissimo Senhor Andre Furtado de Mendoça, por Antonio Craesbeeck de Mello, impressor da Caza Real. - Lisboa : por Antonio Craesbeeck de Mello, 1670" Os Lusíadas, usually translated as The Lusiads, is a Portuguese epic poem written by Luís Vaz de Camões (c. 1524/5 - 1580) and first published in 1572. It is widely regarded as the most important work of Portuguese literature and is frequently compared to Virgil's Aeneid (1st c. BC). The work celebrates the discovery of a sea route to India by the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama (1469-1524). The ten cantos of the poem are in ottava rima and total 1,102 stanzas. Written in Homeric fashion, the poem focuses mainly on a fantastical interpretation of the Portuguese voyages of discovery during the 15th and 16th centuries. Os Lusíadas is often regarded as Portugal's national epic, much as Virgil's Aeneid was for the Ancient Romans, or Homer's Iliad and Odyssey for the Ancient Greeks. It was written when Camões was an exile in Macau and was first printed in 1572, three years after the author returned from the Indies.

Domenico Maria BONAVERI (Bologna 1653 - 1731)
Bulino, circa 1670, monogrammato in lastra in basso. Rara. Engraving, circa 1670, monogrammed in plate below. AfterTitian. Beautiful impressions, printed on contemporary laid paper, with thin margins, light abrasions in the top, otherwise in good condition. These works are part of Notomie di Tiziano dedicate all'Ill.mo Sig. Francesco Ghislieri published in Bologna between 1670 and 1680. The title page contains the portrait of Titian between the bay leaves, the lion of St. Mark, a cloth containing the dedication. Here are 17 anatomical engravings. Fourteen of the plates are taken from De humani corporis fabrica of Vesalius and the other from Tabulae anatomicae VI, also of Vesalius. These in fact were not actually designed by Titian, but by Jan van Calcar, while the first group p … [Click Below for Full Description]

ont> E Okes for William Whitwood : London, 1670 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition.. The first edition of this scarce tract on Ralph Wallis, a nonconformist pamphleteer known as 'the Cobler of Gloucester'. This tract appeared following the death of Wallis and focuses on Wallis' ideas and his pamphleteering. Wallis' biographer states to this work that 'His complexion was of a sunburnt gipsy colour, and his skin was rough and tawny, like singed bacon; his hair was brown and bristly upon his head, but his locks were weather-turned, like a barber's show periwig'. Despite his Nonconformist views, Wallis was raised by Roman Catholic parents. His parents were 'church papists' meaning they conformed to the demands of the Church of England enough to escape persecution. It is believed that Wallis began writing his pamphlets against the government in the 1650's but these early works have not survived. Wallis was apprehended by the government following his dispersion of pamphlets and he was held in custody. He admitted authorship of the works but declared to be in religion 'a Christian' and so was released. His pamphlets were frequently of a scatological tone and featured entertaining anecdotes regarding clergymen whose names and addresses he knew. (DNB) This work is the ESTC no. R20134. Collated, complete. Rebound in full cloth. This biography provides further insight into the political and religious turbulence of the seventeenth century. Condition: Rebound, in a full cloth binding. Externally, excellent with little to no shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly … [Click Below for Full Description]
