John Ogilby
London: Printed by Tho. Johnson for the author, 1670. Folio. Mid-19th century 3/4 green leather over marbled boards. Only 31 maps and plans. Wear to boards, some bumping. Lacking title page, frontis, folding general map of Africa, pages 1-12. 743-760, 764-767, list of plates, lacking folding tables. Soiling, foxing marginal dampstaining. Extenstive chipping and tears to margins with loss to text. Most plans and maps remounted with significant loss to engravings, loss to folds. An unsophicated copy. Ogilby's work is the most authentic and comprehensive work on Africa in English published in the seventeenth century and is of particular interest for the accounts of the natives in southern Africa. Though separately issued, the work was intended as the first volume in a planned "English Atlas" series, and is sometimes found with an additional half-title with the series title (as here), or with the spine numbered as volume one. Besides the above explanation on the sources used, Ogilby's preface, dated April 28, 1670, is of note as it contains the only autobiographical details on the great historian. Refs: Lowndes III, p.1719; Wing O-163; Mendelssohn (1979) 3, p.571; Tooley, Africa, p.87.; Cox I, 361. Fair. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Contemporary calf, ruled in blind. Twelvemo. Binding extremities worn and rubbed. Crown and tail if spine crudely repaired. Contemporary ink marginalia to p. 319, contemporary ink annotations and signature to preliminary blanks. A very good, tight copy. John Ray (1627-1705) was a naturalist and theologian. During his lifetime, he traveled throughout England and Europe, using his travels as a way to further expand his botanical knowledge In 1646, while he was a sizar at Trinity College, he tended a small garden in which he planted specimens that he had either gathered himself or friends had sent to him. It was in this manner that he was able to learn about some of the differences between varieties of plants and trees. By this time, he was well-versed in English botanical literature and understood its limitations; he was surprised to find that no one at the university was proficient in this area of study. Ray then decided to catalogue all of the plants that he had encountered during walks in the countryside around Cambridge, the result being Catalogus plantarum … [Click Below for Full Description]

The genuine edition, authorized by Erasmus, was first published in Basel by Froben in 1522. In the short preface to this work, repeated also in this edition of 1670, Erasmus explains that he feels obliged to publish this work, because a kind of pirate edition had been published in England recently (i.e. 'Libellus de conscribendis epistolis', published in 1521 by John Siberch, in Cambridge) without his knowledge and consent. It was pirated from a copy of an old manuscript work of him on the art of writing letters, which he wrote, he continues, about 30 years ago (annis abhinc ferme triginta, ca. 1492) in Paris at the request of a friend.
