Jahrhunderts" (Wolfskehl in Slg Manheimer). - VD17 3:004327G. Dünnhaupt 69.1. Otto 136. Goed. III 102, 57. Slg Manheimer 465. Vgl.         LETTERA DI FRANCESCO REDI GENTILUOMO ARETINO, SOPRA ALCUNE OPPOSIZIONI FATTE ALLE SUE OSSERVAZIONI INTORNO ALLE VIPERE. Scritta alli Signori Bourdelot, Sig. di Condè e di S.Leger e Alessandro Moro.

Nella Stamperia della Stella 1670 Prima edizione. Cm.24,3x17. Pg.48.

. Madrid, M. Alegre, 1670. 4to, 20 ll, 205 numbered leaves (a few inconsistent), 15 ll of tabla general (general index), and one engraved portrait of San Vicente Ferrer and 18 engravings in the text, all of the birds discussed. Limp vellum with beautifully contemporary calligraphed title on the spine. New flyleaves.* Rare first illustrated edition. An interesting mixture of fact and fancy that throws much light on popular ideas regarding the ornithology of Spain in the 17th century, in which (with some information of value) one finds the usual pious adjuncts to be expected from this author. Although Wood only quotes 17 plates, we think it should have 18 as our copy has. It deals with the Aguila (eagle), Buytre (buzzard), Ciguena (stork), Garza or Garca (heron), Cisne (swan), Fenix, Pelicano (but the illustration suggests that the writer did not know this bird), Halcon (falcon), Gavilan (harrier), Buho (owl), Grulla (crane), Papagayo (parrot), Ansaron (goose), Avestruz (ostrich), Pavo Real (peacock), Cuervo (crow), Paloma (pigeon), and the Gallo (chicken). Some marginal foxing and one right corner of the text (p. 143) with some slight loss of paper, but without touching the text itself. New flyleaves and a library stamp on the title-page. Palau 90597 mentions a first, unillustrated edition from 1668. However, we find no references to that edition elsewhere. In any case, this is the first illustated edition, with an engraved portrait of the author. The Licencia de la Orden is dated 30 de Setiembre 1669, the Aprobation Octubre 23 de 1669. Several later editions appeared. Wood, p. 339; Palau, 90597; Jerez, p. 43..

        De Miraculis Mortuorum. Mortuary miracles

Christian Kirchner, (Kirchneri). Leipzig: 1670 - First edition thus. Garmann, L. Christian.(Garmanni) De miraculis mortuorum. 4to. [16], 112", [8]pp. Vellum with leather label, antique style. Very good copy. To a large degree a repertoire collected from extensive reading in the magic and pseudo-science of the 17th century. Garmann was an influence on Bryon and Shelley according to some scholars influencing the writing of Frankenstien. He along with Conrad Dipple (disciple of Athanesius Kicher) were the archetypal blueprints for the mad scientist ( Dr Frankenstien). Garmann's "Mortuary miracles" was not entirely without scientific sense. For example, the Chemnitz physician gave an accurate citation from Tagliacozzi and discussion of restoration techniques far in advance of his contemporaries for whom plastic operations continued to be the butt of literary satire until the 19th century (see Gnudi & Webseter, pp. 295-97). Garmann also provided an early discussion of blood transfusion, referring to Lower's experiments of 1665-67. See G-M 1723, Garmann's pioneering work on the medico-legal aspects of multiple births.

» 1 manuscript page. Fine letter, from Louis the XIV's administration, to the Comte de Brallon, related to the application of the official orders against the duels (27th of august 1670). This practise decimated the French gentry, every thing, even or especially the most frivolous things, being a pretext to fight. Precious historical document.

        Usuries Champions and Auxiliaries

London 1670 - This is a very old book. This book was published in 1670. Most likely this is a First Edition but the actual title page is missing, but it has been supplied in manuscript. The book was rebound in the 1830's, because on the cover in Roman numerals it reads "1832". The binding is black leather with gold tooling. The gold tooling on the front and back covers are very elaborate. On the spine it has the title, below that a symbol or shield of some sort and below that is a date of the book in gold "1670". The binding is completely in tact, but has some scuffing and rubbing. For its age it is in great condition. Both boards are together and there are no tears to the pages. Two or three pages in the beginning of the book are detached. The printing of the pages, some are not straight, and some pages, the printing goes almost to the bottom of the page. There are 284 pages. The fore-edge is most likely from the 1830's. The edge is of a tavern scene with two men and a dog.!!!FREE SHIPPING!!! [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
