        Leiden panorama - Christian Hagen.

Prijs: ?4.950,- (incl. lijst, incl. 21% BTW).

1670. First Edition . OGILBY, John. Africa: Being an Accurate Description of the Regions of Aegypt, Barbary, Lybia, and Billedulgerid, the Land of Negroes, Guinee, Aethopia, and the Abyssines, with all the Adjacent IslandsÂ… London: Printed by Tho. Johnson for the Author, 1670. Folio (11 by 17 inches), period-style full mottled and paneled calf, elaborately gilt-decorated spine and boards, red morocco spine label, marbled endpapers. $20,000.First edition of the most authentic and comprehensive work in English on Africa published during the 17th century, superbly illustrated with 13 double-page maps, 30 double-page copper-engraved plans and views, eight full-page plates (including an engraved frontispiece), more than 40 in-text engraved vignettes by Hollar and others, and a large folding map of the entire African continent (measuring 18 by 23 inches when open). Handsomely bound in elaborately gilt-decorated period-style calf. A magnificent volume. The first in what was intended to be a comprehensive series of world atlases, Ogilby's Africa is widely recognized as one of the finest English illustrated books relating to that continent. The text, drawn in part from that of Ogilby's contemporary Olfert Dapper, was the most extensive English account of Africa published to date. The work's primary value, however, lies in its extensive notes on southern Africa and its splendid engraved maps, plans and views—this copy contains 53 plates altogether—as well as its more than 40 in-text vignettes. The 14 maps include the large (18 by 23 inches when opened) folding engraved map showing all of Africa, as well as double-page maps of Egypt, Morocco, southern (or ""Aethopia"") and western (""Negroland"") Africa, the Congo, Madagascar, and the Cape Verde and Canary Islands. Among the superb engraved views and plates are Alexandria and Cairo, Tangier, Tripoli, Tunis, Algeries, St. Helena, and the pyramids, as well as important depictions of the region's inhabitants and wildlife. The portions of the book relating to southernmost Africa include extensive notes on the rulers and inhabitants of dozens of separate African nations, including Lovango, Angola, Congo, Guinee, Burno, Nubia and many others. These descriptions, among the first in English relating to this part of Africa, opened a window onto a new and largely unexplored world. ""Ogilby may be considered as the English De Bry, his works are similar in their objects, compilation, and mode of illustrations"" (Cox II, 69). Copies are found with varying plate configurations: in addition to those listed on the plate list at the end of the volume, a series of additional plates is sometimes included. This copy includes all plates called for in the list, with four additional (frontispiece and three other plates, bound at pages 385, 398 and 401). With half title. With 14 of the 18 preliminary pages of place name lists, printed on one side only, called for by Hosken (152). Cox I:361. Wing O163. Lowndes 1719. Allibone, 1450. Text and plates with some leaves expertly cleaned, occasional marginal expert paper restoration, faint marginal dampstaining to a few leaves. A splendid volume, scarce and significant.

First edition of this important work on perspective and painting. "The draughtsman and engraver Grégoire Huret (1610-70) - an academician who was also close to the king - took over Bosse's lectures at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. In 1670, Huret published Optique de portraiture et peinture (Optics of portraying and painting) in which he expressed great concern about the state of the art, particularly criticising Bosse's book from 1665 [On the practices of geometrical planes and perspectives] and previous publications... Huret claimed that his book should be seen as a contribution to the education of the young, especially to teaching them useful rules for drawing perspective... Huret was well read and discussed books on other subjects than perspective. Naturally enough these included general works on painting, but also Desargues's and Pascal's works on projective geometry... Among the more productive passages in Huret's book one can find a presentation of the construction and use of an angle scale. He also dealt with a point most authors avoided, namely the use of scaled lengths in perspective constructions. In this connection he presented the technique for applying a reduced distance in a distance point construction - without reducing the actual distance - that 'sGravesande applied later ... Huret may have been searching for a closer link between perspective and projective geometry. It also seems he had some doubts concerning perspective that were similar to those expressed by Leonardo da Vinci" (Andersen, The Geometry of an Art: the History of the Mathematical Theory of Perspective from Alberti to Monge, 2007, pp. 465-66). "In portraying the bodies of man and animals Huret grants the liberty to the painter to draw them without any perspectival distortion on the picture plane, just as the eyes see them in life. This is a plea for a flexible response to natural vision and Judgement by eye ... Not surprisingly he criticized Cousin, Barbaro, Marolois and Desargues for taking mathematical perspective beyond its visual limits" (Martin Kemp, The Science of Art, Yale University Press 1990, S. 125) Macclesfield Sale lot 1079; Arnoud de Vitry Sale lot 459 & 460. [8], 14, [2] pp., engraved title-vignette by Bloteling and full-page illustration in text, with the final blank. 2 works bound in one volume. 4to (216x180 mm). Contemporary vellum (soiled, bowed). Mild browning and occasional minor spotting throughout, light dampstain to top gutter of the last third of the text, first title page somewhat frayed at top margin, tear in fold of 1st plate, closed tear to plates xxx and xxxix without loss. Provenance: A. B. Winkler, Paiewesky (names inscribed on first title page). ----I. Norman 1209; Garrison-M 383; Heirs of Hippocrates 632; Waller 5270; Wellcome III p.386; NLM/Krivatsy 6346. - FIRST EDITION of Kerckring's investigations into fetal development. Kerckring's most important and far-reaching contribution, presented in part two of the Spicilegium anatomicum, was his discovery that the fetal skeleton develops through the transformation of membrane and cartilage into bone. He 'was the first to describe 'Kerckring's ossicle,' an occasional center of ossification in the occipital bone' (Norman); his name is also preserved in the valvulae conniventes, or valves of Kerckring, a part of the small intestine, previously described by Falloppio, and studied in part I of the Spicilegium. - II. Norman 1210; Waller 5268; Wellcome III p.387; NLM/Krivatsy 6345. - FIRST EDITION and a continuation of his study of fetal osteology; in it Kerckring sets forth his mistaken theory that the younger fetal skeleton is a mere miniature of the older fetus, backing his claim with reported "observations" of unprecedentedly early specimens, but it is clear from his illustrations that he was mistaken about their age and structure. He was correct, however, in stating that the ovaries of both oviparous and viviparous contain ova. (Norman 1210). Very Good.

First edition of the French translation of Thomas Crane (the original was published in Dutch in 1651 and a German edition was printed in 1663), illustrated with a magisterial title frontispiece showing a dance ceremony on fire, three prints full screen and two mid-page (included in paging) and a folding plate consists of ten figures; these boards were made by Roger from his observations. Another edition was published the same year as The Theatre of idolatrerie, or The Open Door to reach the knowledge of the hidden paganism; the text is exactly the same.Binding slightly later (probably XVIII) "cartonnage" speckled vellum way back with five nerves with two old handwritten labels library. Headdresses bowed slightly, the slightly slotted head and a little lack in upper flat tail joints. Tt slip connected after Tt 2 and Tt 3 Tt 4 before.A label "of Mr. January Flainville firm" and the bookplate of the Library of Baron de Caix St. Aymour glued on the first contreplat. dated 1767 handwritten notes regarding the purchase of the book on the back of the first guard.rare and curious work on religious ceremonies and traditional witchcraft India, its author, "Protestant pastor, was embarked in 1640 for the East Indies, and remained tied almost six years as minister of the Gospel to the Dutch factorie of Palivent, on the Coromandel coast. He took advantage of his stay in this country so little known, to ascertain the purpose of the Hindus, and having had the pleasure of bonding with some Brahmins, he obtained valuable information on their belief and worship "(Caillet, Manuel bibliographic psychic or occult, 9560).This is the first known book of the Brahmins, the bulk of the book is also dedicated to them. Another section is dedicated to "One hundred proverbs Payen Barthrovherri" Sanskrit poet. The last chapter entitled "China extract illustrated by the Rev. A. Kirchere (sic)" and shows the work of the latter also devoted to Brahmins. As highlighted Devika Vijayan ( "Gods monsters of India: the negation of art in the discourse of French travelers in the East Indies (seventeenth century)," Viatica) at the time of publication of the book, no author became interested in Hinduism:"Roger was not wrong in these circumstances, to proclaim that he opened the doors of an unknown universe. His book is indeed rich new distinctions. He first discern the diversity of Shaiva sects and vichnouites, outlines the ten avatars of Vishnu god and present the Buddha as one of these avatars. It also recognizes that Hindus assert the sovereignty of a single God. It is also in The Open Door Roger iconography begins to take a distinctly Hindu color, as shown in the frontispiece, which reveals an effort by the designer to provide readers with a comprehensive picture of Hinduism, its religious customs and performances of his deities. At the top of the illustration is an Indian temple flanked by two Hindu deities, one of them being the elephant god Ganesh. Downstairs is represented party Jagannath. The statue of the god is placed on a trolley and the machine is in turn driven by the pilgrims. Unlike the usual posture of old travelers, the description of the gods is devoid of adjectives. Roger tends rather to observe, describe and refrain from judgment. "The researcher is also interested in Jesuit Athanasius Kircher, including Roger gets an extract of the book:"Equally known in his time Roger Abraham, the Jesuit Athanasius Kircher, in his China illustrata written in Latin, also deals with India as from Japan, but he has never visited these countries. The French translation appeared in 1670 in Amsterdam. It is undeniable that Kircher despised Indian paganism, but we look at it as an attempt to understand Hinduism without continuing to a simple description ridicule practices. It makes an attempt of comparative religion between Hinduism and Christianity and began a discussion of the philosophy of the Hindus "Beautiful copy of this rare book, the first to raise the Brahmins and their rituals. Perrault, of course, is best known for creating an entire literary genre, the fairy tale, derived from half-forgotten folk tales. His Le Petit Chaperon rouge (Little Red Riding Hood), Cendrillon (Cinderella), Le Chat Botté (Puss in Boots), La Barbe bleue (Bluebeard), and many others were later rewritten and popularized by the Brothers Grim.       [Dublin?], 1670. 38pp. plus errata. Small quarto. Modern red calf. Evenly age-toned, a bit darker in page margins. About very good. An early anti-Catholic treatise by William Penn, and an example of the excitability of the young Quaker. While in Ireland in the winter of 1669-70, Penn found a work by Christopher Davenport called AN EXPLANATION OF THE ROMAN- CATHOLICK BELIEF. Fearing that Catholicism might find a ready foothold in Ireland, Penn dashed off the present work, which was first published in Ireland sometime in early 1670, and then in a second edition in London in 1671. He takes up ten tenets of the Catholic church and uses Scripture to demolish those beliefs. Ultimately, Penn feels that Catholics cannot be trusted because their faith proclaims that it cannot accept heretics. Later, as he developed a stronger embrace of religious toleration and freedom of conscience, Penn would moderate his views. OCLC locates only seven copies. A scarce early work by the future founder of Pennsylvania, and an unusual espousal of religious intolerance on his part. BRONNER & FRASER, PENN BIBLIOGRAPHY 7A. SMITH, FRIENDS' BOOKS II:286.       Artist: Cellarius / Loon van Andreas; issued in: Amsterdam; date: 1670 - - technic: Copper print; colorit: original colored; condition: Perfect condition; size in cm : 44 x 52 - description: Striking map of the famous Harmonia Macrocosmica atlas of Andreas Cellarius, also called the Cellarius Atlas. Cellarius demonstrates the Ptolemaic theory of epicycles. The epicycles theory addressed a problem that arose from the assumption that if the Earth was the center of the universe, then the circuit of the planets should be of a steady one-directional, circular progress. Observation showed, however, that the orbital progress of the planets was in fact irregular, and from these observations arose the ancient theory of epicycles illustrated here. - Vita of the artist: "Andreas Cellarius (c. 1596 ? 1665) was a Dutch-German cartographer, best known for his Harmonia Macrocosmica of 1660, a major star atlas, published by Johannes Janssonius in Amsterdam.Andreas Cellarius, illustration of the Copernican system, from the Harmonia Macrocosmica 1660.He was born in Neuhausen, now a part of Worms, and was educated in Heidelberg. The Protestant Cellarius may have left Heidelberg at the onset of the Thirty years war in 1618 or in 1622 when the city came in Catholic hands. His activities are unclear at this time but based on his later works it is conjectured he spent time in Poland and may have even worked as a military engineer there. In 1625 he married Catharina Elt(e)mans in Amsterdam, where he worked as school master of a Latin School. After a brief stay in The Hague, the family moved to Hoorn. From 1637 until his death he was rector of the Latin School in Hoorn, where Pieter Anthoniszoon Overtwater was conrector."

- Anno 1583.         De Motionibus Naturalibus a Gravitate Pendentibus…

Numerous woodcut diagrams in the text. 4 p.l., 566, [5] pp. Thickish 4to, cont. semi-stiff boards (a little soiled), uncut. Reggio di Calabria: D. Ferri, 1670. First edition and scarce. "Borelli's second book on mechanics is important as the first treatise on capillarity. It contains the important investigations from which the author formulated the law that the height of the ascent of liquids in capillary tubes is inversely proportional to their diameters. His investigations also led him to the conclusion that the phenomenon of capillarity is independent of the pressure of air."-Roberts & Trent, Bibliotheca Mechanica, p. 42. Borelli saw this book not only as a work exploring aspects of mechanics but also as a necessary introduction to what he would later consider to be his most important work, the De Motu Animalium. A fine copy in original state. ❧ D.S.B., II, p. 311-In this book "he argues against positive levity, discusses the Torricellian experiment, takes up siphons, pumps, and the nature of fluidity, tries to understand the expansion of water while freezing, and deals with fermentation and other chemical processes." Riccardi, I, 159.
