1668. Genital man, penis, uterus, baby Engraving / etching on verge type hand laid paper with watermark. Description: This old antique medical anatomy print originates from Andreas Vesalius collected works: "Opera omnia anatomica & chirurgica", edited by Ed. H. Boerhaave (1668-1738) & B.S. This work is appreciated for its beauty and careful preparation in which the human figures which are placed in classical poses and landscapes, while the display of the structures are based on Vesalius' direct observations during five years of dissection at Padua. TACITUS, Cornelius
1668 Tacitus Annals Histories Roman Empire Nero Caligula ROME Plantin HUGE FOLIO “The more corrupt the state, the more numerous the laws.” ― Tacitus, The Annals Cornelius Tacitus was a 1st-century Roman historian who is now remembered for his two major works – ‘Annals’ and ‘Histories’ – in which he examines the lives and political careers of important Roman emperors such as Tiberius, Nero, and Claudius. By many accounts, Tacitus is considered the greatest Roman historian, not only by the accuracy of his content, but through demonstrating the psychological nature of ancient Roman politics. ‘Histories’ is one of the first written accounts to discuss the Great Jewish Revolt, an account that openly records combative attitudes between Jews and other cultures. ‘Annals’ was Tacitus’s final work and covers the era following the death of Caesar Augustus, including the reigns of Claudius, Caligula, and Nero. It is also the earliest known secular history to mention Jesus Christ in which Tacitus connects Nero to the persecution of early Christians. This 1668 edition is incredibly desirable! Published by Plantin Press, this huge, folio edition is a reissue of the 1627 Justus Lipsius printing, edited by decorative initials throughout and a thoroughly detailed index at the end. BOLLAND, Jean
1668. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Jean Bolland was a 17th-century Flemish Jesuit priest who is most remembered for his contributions to 'Acts of the Saints' or 'Acta Sanctorum'. 'Acta Sanctorum' was an enormous folio set of biographical entries of the Catholic saints. Each critique is organized by each saint's feast day. Bolland began his portion of 'Acta' after the death of Heribert Rosweyde, the organizer of the original project. This incredible set is the three-volumes of 'Acta' contributed by Bolland and overseen by Bollanists. It features the biographical accounts of important figures and church fathers such as Clement IX, Saint Domangarto, Saint Eusebius, Saint Senan, Thomas Aquinas, Theophilus of Adana, Saint Winwaloe, Peter of Ireland and many more! This book also discusses several occurrences of supernatural wonders and miracles including the bizarre life of Saint Torello of Poppi (d. 1282) who was known to have mystical powers over beasts. According to Summers, "On one occasion when a wolf had carried off the little son of a poor woman of Poppi, the blessed hermit by his word compelled the wolf to bring the child unharmed to his anchorage where he restored him to the weeping mother. The beast fled into the woods. The Bollandists write: 'a wolf, commonly called Moninus, which is to say a feeder upon human flesh.' It may very well be, however, that Moninus signifies a Werewolf." (Summers) Until his death, Torello kept Poppi free and safe from warlocks and werewolves and other abominations! [Attributes: Fir … [Click Below for Full Description]

[DANDI, Giovanni Pellegrino].
Cordier, Sinica, col. 912; WorldCat (2 copies); not in Löwendahl; Lust. First and only edition of a rare account on the confinement and death of cardinal Charles Thomas Maillard de Tournon (1668-1710), written by the Italian friar Giovanni Pellegrino Dandi (1664-1726).In 1702 Tournon was appointed by the Roman Catholic church to promote the Catholic faith in China and the East Indies, to establish harmony among the missionaries there and to enforce the decision of the Holy Office against the further toleration of the so-called Chinese rites among the native Christians. He headed for India (Pondicherry) in 1703 and later went to the Coromandel Coast. On 11 July 1704 he set sail for China by way of the Philippine Islands, arriving at Macau on 2 April, and at Beijing on 4 December 1705. The Kangxi Emperor received him kindly at first, but upon hearing that he came to abolish the Chinese rites among the native Christians, he demanded from all missionaries on pain of immediate expulsion a promise to retain these rites. At Rome the Holy Office had meanwhile decided against the rites on 20 November 1704, and being acquainted with this decision, the legate issued a decree at Nanjing on 25 January 1707, obliging the missionaries under pain of excommunication to abolish these rites. Thereupon, the emperor ordered Tournon to be imprisoned at Macau and sent some Jesuit missionaries to Rome to protest against the decree. Tournon died in his prison, shortly after being informed that he had been created cardinal on 1 August 1707. The mission and legation of Tournon is described in detail … [Click Below for Full Description]

"Rycaut, from his long residence and connection with the Embassy, was well qualified to delineate Levantine customs ... [His] History is regarded as one of the best of its kind with respect to the religious and military state of Turkey" (Cox I, 210). "An extremely important and influential work, which provides the fullest account of Ottoman affairs during the 17th century" (Blackmer 1463). The first edition of 1667 was mostly destroyed by the London fire in September 1666. Howgego I, R92; Wing R2413.

With printer's device on titlepage (margin restored) and woodcut engraved plate illustrating familial bloodlines for five generations. 269 pp.Name on flyleaf, dated 1725; interleaved copy with many comtemporay manuscript annotation. - The Nádasdy, is a major Hungarian aristocratic family whose roots reach into the Middle Ages. They made a large contribution to the development of Hungarian printing. The famous Hungarian Count Franz III Nádasdy's work on Hungarian Imperial law, printed within the walls of his castle at Pottendorf. Count Franz Nádasdy (1622-1671), a Hungarian baron, Lord Lieutenant, Royal Council, Chief Chamberlain and Chief Justice, was doubly of royal descent. Specifically, he is descended from the line of the Anjou Plantagenet whose medieval ancestors settled as the Nádasd in Hungary. In 1665, Nádasdy gained control of Pottendorf castle and set up a printing shop where he employed the Antwerp printer and bookseller Jerome Verdussen. In 1667, Franz found himself at the head of the conspiratorial secret society. The next year, this printed work appeared from within the castle walls. The Cynosura is a self-compiled work that provided short comments on the recent subject index of Hungarian Imperial laws adopted until 1659. Two years later, and somewhat ironically, the unfortunate count found himself amid an uprising and armed rebellion and was later beheaded in 1671 for conspiracy against Emperor Leopold I of Austria. - Rare.

Rycaut, Paul.
London, for John Starkey & Henry Browne, 1668. Folio (198 x 310 mm). (8), 218 pp. With 19 text engravings and two plates (29 costume illustrations in all); wants the frontispiece. Later half calf on five raised bands, gilt, with giltstamped spine label. Marbled endpapers. Edges sprinkled in red. Second printed edition of Sir Paul Rycaut‘s famous Turkish chronicle (the first available), drawn from various authentic sources and from the author‘s own observations. "His most important work [.] presents an animated and, on the whole, faithful picture of Turkish manners" (DNB). "Provides an account of the society and political system of the Ottoman Empire with unprecedented thoroughness" (cf. Osterhammel, Die Entzauberung Asiens, 32). "An extremely important and influential work, which provides the fullest account of Ottoman affairs during the 17th century" (Blackmer). The 1666 first edition, which this replaces, was almost entirely destroyed by the Great Fire of London. The attractive engravings depict dignitaries and persons of various ranks in their costumes, also including the illustration of a turban. The loss of the frontispiece is to some degree extenuated by the fact that it merely showed a repeat of the engraving on fol. B2v (Sultan Mehmed IV on his throne). - Corners bumped. Some foxing, but still a good, prettily bound copy. DESCARTES, RENÉ. - THE NEW PHILOSOPHICAL METHOD.
Paris, Theodore Girard, 1668. 4to. Contemp. full calf. Raised bands, richly gilt spine. Title-label with gilt lettering. Wear to spine ends, a small crack to leather at upper compartment. Corners bumped. (4),413,(31) pp. 7 full-page woodcut illustrations and 115 woodcut illustrations in the text. Lower right corner of title-page neathly repaired, no loss. Apart from a few minor brownspots internally fine and clean. Apparently a variant edition of the fourth edition of "Discours", printed by Theodore Girard, as one of three (?) editions printed in 1668 (the more common being that printed by Angot). Here Descartes developes his new philosophical method into a new scientific methodology, which he here applies to the fields of optics and meteorology. The privilege to printing was given to the printer Nicolas le Gras, who shared it with his brother in law, Girard (the printer of the offered item). The leading publishers of Descartes were Elzevier, Blaeu and Jeansson in Amsterdam and Girard, Bobin, Le Gras, and Angot in Paris. The four Frenchmen appear to have coordinated the publication of particular editions among themselves. They apparently produced variant copies which were similar but which were intentionally distinctive only in the name of the bookseller in the imprint. Le Gras and Girard were brothers-in-law.

[First University established in America; Education, Mexico] [Solis y Haro, Marcelino de].
First edition, and the first printing of the constitutions and regulations of the first University of the Americas, the University of Mexico, founded in 1551; the book is prefaced by a short history. Its creation has origin in the Real Cedula of Emperor Charles V of 1551, following the incentive of Fray Juan de Zumarraga, first Bishop of Mexico snd eventually the introducer of the printing press to Mexico (the first ever brought to America) and Antonio de Mendoza, first Viceroy of Mexico, although its inauguration was not until 1553, and shortly presided by Francisco de Cervantes Salazar, a significant Spanish humanist. Although no longer in existence today, both the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico and the Universidad Pontificia de Mexico considered themselves their successors. As can be understood, the erection of such a relevant institution, first of its kind in America was a significant event, and this first printing of their statutes an important source of information on it. Provenance: early inscription on half-title, partial marca de fuego on bottom edge; bookplate of collector Federico Gómez de Orozco (1891-1962) on front free endpaper. Rare, no copy traced at auction other than this in nearly 30 years. Medina, Mexico 1011.
