REDI, F.
Firenze, all'Insegna della Stella, 1668. 4to (235 x 165mm). pp. (8), 228, title printed in red and black with engraved vignette, with 10 full page engravings and 2 smaller engraved text illustrations and 28 numbered engraved plates. Contemporary vellum. First edition, first issue. A few copies have a plate numbered 29 showing a fly which was issued later. "Redi's masterpiece is considered to be 'Esperienze intorno alla generazione degl'Insetti' (1668), in which he disproved the doctrine of spontaneous generation in insects, inherited from Aristotle and still considered dogma. The microscope revealed in insects an organization as marvelous as it was unsuspected. Redi prepared and observed the egg-producing apparatus in insects, and he also used the microscope to good advantage in observing the morphological elements characteristic of the eggs of each species" (DSB XI, p. 341). "Redi was one of the first to disprove the theory of spontaneous generation" (Horblit 88). A few text leaves with some dampstaining at the outer margin and apart from that a fine copy with clear impressions of the plates.D. Pandi, Bibl. delle opere di F. Redi p. 3 'Raro'; Nissen ZBI, 3319; Norman p. 655 (likewise quoting a copy with 28 plates). [Attributes: First Edition]

Berquen, Robert de.
1668. 4to. (8), 152 pp. With engr. portrait frontispiece of Anne Marie Louise d'Orleans and numerous pretty woodcut initials and tailpieces. Contemp. richly gilt calf, gilt dentelle central cover decoration showing the Sacred Heart of Jesus, gilt spine on five raised bands (upper spine-end and corners repaired). Marbled pastedowns. Second, enlarged edition of this rare work on precious stones and pearls found in the East and West Indies, written by a Parisian "marchand orphèvre" in Paris and first published in 1661. Both editions are dedicated to "La Grande Mademoiselle" Anne Marie Louise d'Orléans, Duchess of Montpensier and niece of Louis XIII, with her finely engraved portrait, which is here more delicately executed (by Nicolas de Larmessin, in 1664). The large chapter devoted to pearls and pearl fishing cites the Persian Gulf and several specific places there as among the main locations of pearl fishing: "on pesche les perles en divers endroits du monde. (p. 68). This chapter is here "augmented with an appendix which recounts the history of the Spanish conquest in the New World and additionally gives remarks on pearl fisheries, natural history, and production [...] New chapters comprise Ch. 17, on the pricing of diamonds according to size and quality, and Ch. 18 on pricing of pearls. [48] + 587 + [62] (= i.e. 52) pp., original and only edition (1648), the title page mentions 1668 though this is a misprint corrected by a contemporary handwritten note (most probably by the author Rovenius himself: see here below), title in red and black, contemporary full vellum, 23cm., text clean and bright, good condition, rare, [Philippus Rovenius 1574-1651, catholic priest and archbishop of Philippi (1620), who played an important role in the propagation of Roman Catholic faith in the 17th cy. Dutch protestant Republic, donated this present copy to Cornelis Cats in Haarlem. Cats (Catzius), Gorcum 1613 - 3 January 1671, was appointed in 1645 by Rovenius as one of the four chaplains of the Saint Bavo Church in Haarlem, and in 1654 Cats became pastor of the Beguinage in Haarlem. The following dedication (most probably by Rovenius himself) is handwritten on the French title page: "Admodum R[everend]o D[omi]no ac M[a]g[ist]ro Cornelio Catzio pastori Beginagii Harlemensis Author dono dedit" meaning that this copy was donated personally by Rovenius to Cats. This copy belonged to the collection of p. Gerlach O.F.M.Cap., a well-known 20th cy. Dutch scholar, who wrote a short comment on this copy on the French title page, mentioning a.o. that the author himself corrected the date of publication (1648 instead of 1668). The "Reipublicae christianae" is considered to be the most important work by Rovenius, in which he develops a theory on the social position of men "or a doctrine of religious and social duties establishing a complete christian moral". His masterpiece, An Essay Towards a Real Character and A Philosophical Language, is a key text in the history of language. Ready for publication in January 1666 but destroyed by the Great Fire, the work finally published in 1668 is Wilkins' attempt at creating a universal language. Wilkins maintained that because all people's minds functioned in the same way and had a similar ‘apprehension of things', it should be possible to cultivate a rational universal language and a character that would also articulate things and notions." - Anne Niemetz, A Universal Language, 2003.
Bel exemplaire. Cf. Les Monumens Provinois (2007) [Attributes: First Edition]

Esemplare assai puro e fresco.

DESCARTES, René (1596-1650)
Paris: Chez Charles Angot, 1668. Hardcover. Very Good+. 4to (223 x 160mm). 303pp., [xxiii, of tables]. Full contemporary calf; well rubbed. Over 100 fine woodcut diagrams throughout, several full-page. Woodcut printer’s device to title; (small tear to title at upper right margin, slighty browned; slightly rubbed, corners bumped). From the collection of J. Richard D.M. Ex Bibliotheca (18th-century armorial rubber stamp to title and p. 3) possibly French, 1638-1739. Early Illustrated Edition of Descartes’ Discourse on the Method, one of the most influential works in the history of modern philosophy, and important to the evolution of natural sciences. This work features Descartes’ famous line “I think therefore I am,” which he wrote in French (Je pense donc je suis) thereby reaching a wider audience in his country than that of scholars. The Discours was originally published in Leiden in 1637. Published also in Paris, the same year as this edition, is an edition by Bobel and De Gras. Descartes started his line of reasoning by doubting everything, so as to assess the world from a fresh perspective, clear of any preconceived notions. In the Discourse, Descartes tackles the problem of skepticism, which had previously been studied by Sextus Empiricus, Al- Ghazali and Michel de Montaigne. The Discourse, divided into six parts, was intended as an introduction to three of his works Dioptrique, Météores and Géométrie. His statements of the elementary laws of matter and movement in the physical universe, the theory of vortices, and many other speculations t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Michel de NOSTREDAME (called NOSTRADAMUS)
Paris: Jouxte la Copie d'Amsterdam. A Paris, chez Jean Ribou, 1668. Nouvelle edition. Very good. 12mo (140 x 85 mm). (32), 178 pp. With a portrait of Nostradamus and frontispiece engraving of the 1666 Fire of London, and of the execution of Charles I. Bound in contemporary, no doubt original, drab boards, spine lettered in manuscript, signs of wear (not objectionably so) and gentle use, with some underlining in the text. Rare in the original cartonnage binding, completely unsophisticated. Equally remarkable is the engraved frontispiece which is reproduced by Ian Wilson in his important biography: “Nostradamus: The Man Behind the Prophesies” (Macmillan, 2007, p. 259). Wilson describes the engraving thusly: “The images of Charles I's execution in 1649 and the Great Fire of London in 1666 shows that contemporaries accredited Nostradamus with having predicted both these events.” This edition contains, in addition to the XII "Centuries," the 141 "Presages" derived from those made by Nostradamus in 1555 et seq., as well as the "Other Predictions of Mr. Nostradamus for the current years in this century." This "Nouvelle edition" appeared the same year, and in the same format, as the Amsterdam edition referenced on the title-page (published by Jean Jansson). Dorbon, Bibliotheca Esoterica 349.
