DENHAM, Sir John (1615-1669)
London: Printed [by John Macocke] for H. Herringman. First edition of a Spenserian poetic work by Denham, a “father of English poetry” containing the scarce bound in errata leaf. 2 volumes in one, 8vo (163 x 105mm). [4], 186pp., [4]; [4], 97pp, [Epilogue on verso]. Errata leaf [N6] present. Separately titled for “The destruction of Troy” and “The Sophy” (both 1667). Three quarter calf over marbled paper covered boards, spine with red morocco label stamped in gilt “DENHAM POEMS”; (small wormholes affecting some text after C8, worming affecting lower right margin after p. 81, intermittent dampstaining). 17th-century donation inscription on front free endpaper, “This book was [a] noble gift of my honoured tutour Mr. Staynoe to me ye most devoted of his servants, Jer. Oakeley. ” And signed again on dedication page in upper margin, “Abel Downs” (? ). First Edition of this peculiar production by Denham. Preparation of this volume took some time and Herringman did not register the book by way of the Stationer's until the early part of 1668. Herringman was apparently working on several others of Denham works, including the On Mr. Abraham Cowley: his death and burial amongst the ancient poets (1667), and Cato Major of Old Age: A poem (1669). The printer's name “Macocke” comes from a Pforzheimer Catalogue. Denham's literary career began with the tragedy The Sophy (1641), although he is more often remembered for his descriptive poem Cooper's Hill, which was a foundational work for English georgic writing style. This 1668 work includes both the Sophy and Cooper's Hill and an essay on t … [Click Below for Full Description]

COWLEY, ABRAHAM
London: Printed by J. M. for Henry Herringman, 1668. FIRST COLLECTED EDITION, FIRST PRINTING (without the errata slip added quite late into the first printing, according to Perkin). This is a significant association copy of the first edition of the collected works of one of the most precocious poets in the annals of English literature. Cowley (1616-67) was producing poetic works of inexplicable sophistication before he had settled into puberty; he published his first volume of verse at 15; and he went on to become one of the most popular poets of his day. Cowley was a staunch royalist who served in the exiled court of Charles I's queen, Henrietta Maria, where he helped to encode and decipher messages sent between the monarchy's supporters, including the royal couple themselves. Despite having been arrested and imprisoned as a royalist agent at one point, Cowley escaped the Cromwell years largely unscathed and retired to the countryside in 1663. Upon his death, Cowley was not only given the extraordinary honor of burial in Westminster Abbey (noted by the DNB as "the most lavish funeral which had ever been given to a mere man of letters in England") but was also afforded a privileged spot next to the graves of Spenser and Chaucer. Cowley's influence on contemporary poetry was demonstrably deep; his funerary monument refers to him as "the English Virgil," and Perkin asserts that "[Cowley's] fame as a poet exceeded even that of Milton" during the waning years of the Restoration. Our first collected edition of Cowley's work was compiled by his friend and literary executor Thom … [Click Below for Full Description]

Amsterdam, Apud Ioannem Blaeu, 1668. 4to. All eight parts bound in two excellent, contemporary full vellum bindings with yapp edges and neat handwritten titles to spines. Conforming exactly to the Macdonald&Hargreaves collation (our copy without the "Quadratura Circuli", which, according to Macdonald&Hargreaves, is "probably a later insertion", but which "is included in some copies and has a title-page of it's own". Copies without this part, which does not actually belong to the edition, are early and more desireable. Most copies have this later inserted part and thus 31 plates). ¶ The extremely scarce first edition of the first collected edition of Hobbes' works, being the most desirable, the most sought-after and by far the most important. ERASMUS DESIDERIUS ROTERODAMUS
typis Danielis Elzevirii, 1668. Cm. 11, pp. (8) 589 (3). Con bel frontespizio elzeviriano inciso finemente in rame. Esemplare ben conservato. I Colloquia erasmiani rappresentano molteplici istanze. SANTINELLI BARTOLOMEO.
Romae, Apud Success. Mascardi, 1668. In 8°, cart. coevo; pp. (16), 139, (5).
Th. St."). In Gottl. Figures of several bones: thigh, jaw and foot. The accompanying Latin descriptive text page contains: A. Dextrum femur ., C. Maxilla inferior ., I. Pedi subjacet humerus, . Engraving / etching on verge type hand laid paper with watermark. Description: This old antique medical anatomy print originates from Andreas Vesalius collected works: "Opera omnia anatomica & chirurgica", edited by Ed. H. Boerhaave (1668-1738) & B.S. Albinus (1697-1770), Leiden, published by J. du Vivie and J. & H. Verbeek, 1725. This work is appreciated for its beauty and careful preparation in which the human figures which are placed in classical poses and landscapes, while the display of the structures are based on Vesalius' direct observations during five years of dissection at Padua. Its contemporary impact was enormous. It was almost instantly relegated to history and the way was open for the development of modern medicine. MILTON, John
London: Printed [by Samuel Simmons], and are to be sold by Peter Parker; and by Robert Boulter; and Matthias Walker,, 1668. Small quarto (173 x 126 mm). Sometime skilfully rebound to style in old sprinkled sheep, unlettered, double blind rules. Housed in a brown quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Without the initial blank. Margins trimmed without text loss though touching top rule border on a few leaves, contents generally clean, title leaf with single tiny wormhole at top, bottom edge slightly shaved, and fore edge reinforced on verso, overall very good. First edition, with Amory's first issue title page. The bibliographer Hugh Amory argues for this being the earliest issue of the first edition of Paradise Lost (despite its title page, dated 1668), in which the anonymous author is identified only by his initials, "J.M." This is the same form by which the author is identified in the Stationers' Register, 20 August 1667. Amory speculates that Samuel Simmons, the printer and publisher of the first edition, decided against using Milton's full name on the title page "as the day of publication approached", substituting this version on which the author remained anonymous. Simmons's faltering confidence is understandable because Milton, a prominent supporter of regicide (specifically the execution of Charles I), was still widely regarded as a dangerous radical when Paradise Lost was first published. The contract for the publication of Paradise Lost between Milton and the stationer Samuel Simmons is the earliest agreement between an author and a publisher for whic … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rycaut, Paul.
London, for John Starkey & Henry Browne, 1668. - Folio (198 x 310 mm). (8), 218 pp. With 19 text engravings and two plates (29 costume illustrations in all); wants the frontispiece. Later half calf on five raised bands, gilt, with giltstamped spine label. Marbled endpapers. Edges sprinkled in red. Second printed edition of Sir Paul Rycaut‘s famous Turkish chronicle (the first available), drawn from various authentic sources and from the author‘s own observations. "His most important work [.] presents an animated and, on the whole, faithful picture of Turkish manners" (DNB). "Provides an account of the society and political system of the Ottoman Empire with unprecedented thoroughness" (cf. Osterhammel, Die Entzauberung Asiens, 32). "An extremely important and influential work, which provides the fullest account of Ottoman affairs during the 17th century" (Blackmer). The 1666 first edition, which this replaces, was almost entirely destroyed by the Great Fire of London. The attractive engravings depict dignitaries and persons of various ranks in their costumes, also including the illustration of a turban. The loss of the frontispiece is to some degree extenuated by the fact that it merely showed a repeat of the engraving on fol. B2v (Sultan Mehmed IV on his throne). - Corners bumped. Some foxing, but still a good, prettily bound copy. Provenance: bookplate of Stefanos Karatheodoris, a Greek Phanariote diplomat in Ottoman service and father of the mathematician Constantin Carathéodory. Blackmer 1463. Wing R2413. Weber II, 326. In 1623 Janssonius owned a bookstore in Frankfurt am Main, later also in Danzig, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, Königsberg, Geneva and Lyon. In the 1630s he formed a partnership with his brother in law Henricus Hondius, and together they published atlases as Mercator/Hondius/Janssonius.Under the leadership of Janssonius the Hondius Atlas was steadily enlarged. Renamed Atlas Novus, it had three volumes in 1638, one fully dedicated to Italy. 1646 a fourth volume came out with "English County Maps", a year after a similar issue by Willem Blaeu. Janssonius' maps are similar to those of Blaeu, and he is often accused of copying from his rival, but many of his maps predate those of Blaeu and/or covered different regions. By 1660, at which point the atlas bore the appropriate name "Atlas Major", there were 11 volumes, containing the work of about a hundred credited authors and engravers. It included a description of "most of the cities of the world" (Townatlas), of the waterworld (Atlas Maritimus in 33 maps), … [Click Below for Full Description]

ERASMUS DESIDERIUS ROTERODAMUS
typis Danielis Elzevirii, 1668. Cm. 11, pp. (8) 589 (3). Con bel frontespizio elzeviriano inciso finemente in rame. Esemplare ben conservato. I Colloquia erasmiani rappresentano molteplici istanze.
