[DANDI, Giovanni Pellegrino].
Cordier, Sinica, col. 912; WorldCat (2 copies); not in Löwendahl; Lust. First and only edition of a rare account on the confinement and death of cardinal Charles Thomas Maillard de Tournon (1668-1710), written by the Italian friar Giovanni Pellegrino Dandi (1664-1726).In 1702 Tournon was appointed by the Roman Catholic church to promote the Catholic faith in China and the East Indies, to establish harmony among the missionaries there and to enforce the decision of the Holy Office against the further toleration of the so-called Chinese rites among the native Christians. He headed for India (Pondicherry) in 1703 and later went to the Coromandel Coast. On 11 July 1704 he set sail for China by way of the Philippine Islands, arriving at Macau on 2 April, and at Beijing on 4 December 1705. The Kangxi Emperor received him kindly at first, but upon hearing that he came to abolish the Chinese rites among the native Christians, he demanded from all missionaries on pain of immediate expulsion a promise to retain these rites. At Rome the Holy Office had meanwhile decided against the rites on 20 November 1704, and being acquainted with this decision, the legate issued a decree at Nanjing on 25 January 1707, obliging the missionaries under pain of excommunication to abolish these rites. Thereupon, the emperor ordered Tournon to be imprisoned at Macau and sent some Jesuit missionaries to Rome to protest against the decree. Tournon died in his prison, shortly after being informed that he had been created cardinal on 1 August 1707. The mission and legation of Tournon is described in detail … [Click Below for Full Description]

MAURICEAU, François
Paris: Chez Jean Henault, Jean d'Houry, Robert de Ninville, Jean Baptiste Coignard, 1668.
The Dedication Copy of the first edition of this groundbreaking medical work which "established obstetrics as a science" (G&M). This is a superb copy in a presentation binding of contemporary red morocco stamped with the name of the dedicatees--Les Maistres Chirurgiens Jurez de Paris--and with three signed inscriptions by the author at the end of the printed dedication, announcing the publication of his work's later 17th century revised editions. "This book was without question the most practical, explicit and accurate of the then known treatises on midwifery" (Cutter & Viets, A Short History of Midwifery, p. 51). Mauriceau was "the first to write on tubal pregnancy, epidemic puerperal fever, and the complications that arise in labor from misplacement of the umbilical cord'' (Le Fanu, Notable Medical Books from the Lilly Library, p. 85). Mauriceau popularised the idea of delivery in bed rather than on a birth stool, and while recommending the reading of other learned authors, cautioned that "the most part of them, having never practised the art they undertake to teach, resemble...those geographers who give us the description of many countries which they never saw". "While much in Mauriceau's treatise echoed the teachings of his predecessors, the work also included several important new features, such as Mauriceau's detailed analysis of the mechanism of labor, his introduction of the practice of delivering women in bed rather than in the obstetric chair, the earlie … [Click Below for Full Description]

Joan Blaeu (apud Ioannem Blaev), 1668. The first collected edition of Hobbes's works. Quarto (7 3/16” x 5 13/16”, 195mm x 143mm) Bound in old (XVIIc?) speckled calf, rebacked with the original back-strip laid down. Double blind fillet along the edges of the boards. On the spine, five raised bands. Panels filled with an elaborate gilt filigree-floral motif. Double gilt fillets top and bottom. Title gilt on red calf with double gilt fillet border. Edges of the text-block deep blue-black. Rebacked with the original back-strip laid down most expertly. Fore-corners a little bumped. Hinges rubbed, upper front and rear hinges cracked but firm, some small chips to lower front hinge and tail-piece. Rear end-paper coming up at upper fore-corner. The text is remarkably clean, as are the folding plates. There are also pretty good margins; Vvv2, for example, has the deckle preserved along its lower edge. Armorial bookplate of Thomas Carter of Edgcott (†1835) on front paste-down. On the upper edge of the first free end-paper, the ownership inscription (e libris, which is superior Latin) of Toby Chauncy, Carter’s father-in-law. This is the first collected (Latin) edition of Hobbes’ works. (A complete English edition wouldn’t be published until Molesworth’s sixteen-volume London edition, 1839-1845.) It was published in Amsterdam because Hobbes had been banned from publishing in England on account of the alleged heresy of Leviathan (1651). Hobbes (†1679) is best known as the theorist of social contractualism, laid out in Leviathan. He was, however, a widely accomplished philosopher in the f … [Click Below for Full Description]

They made a large contribution to the development of Hungarian printing. The famous Hungarian Count Franz III Nádasdy's work on Hungarian Imperial law, printed within the walls of his castle at Pottendorf. Count Franz Nádasdy (1622-1671), a Hungarian baron, Lord Lieutenant, Royal Council, Chief Chamberlain and Chief Justice, was doubly of royal descent. Specifically, he is descended from the line of the Anjou Plantagenet whose medieval ancestors settled as the Nádasd in Hungary. In 1665, Nádasdy gained control of Pottendorf castle and set up a printing shop where he employed the Antwerp printer and bookseller Jerome Verdussen. In 1667, Franz found himself at the head of the conspiratorial secret society. The next year, this printed work appeared from within the castle walls. The Cynosura is a self-compiled work that provided short comments on the recent subject index of Hungarian Imperial laws adopted until 1659. Two years later, and somewhat ironically, the unfortunate count found himself amid an uprising and armed rebellion and was later beheaded in 1671 for conspiracy against Emperor Leopold I of Austria. - Rare.

DESCARTES, RENÉ. - THE NEW PHILOSOPHICAL METHOD.
Paris, Theodore Girard, 1668. 4to. Contemp. full calf. Raised bands, richly gilt spine. Title-label with gilt lettering. Wear to spine ends, a small crack to leather at upper compartment. Corners bumped. (4),413,(31) pp. 7 full-page woodcut illustrations and 115 woodcut illustrations in the text. Lower right corner of title-page neathly repaired, no loss. Apart from a few minor brownspots internally fine and clean. Apparently a variant edition of the fourth edition of "Discours", printed by Theodore Girard, as one of three (?) editions printed in 1668 (the more common being that printed by Angot). Here Descartes developes his new philosophical method into a new scientific methodology, which he here applies to the fields of optics and meteorology. The privilege to printing was given to the printer Nicolas le Gras, who shared it with his brother in law, Girard (the printer of the offered item). The leading publishers of Descartes were Elzevier, Blaeu and Jeansson in Amsterdam and Girard, Bobin, Le Gras, and Angot in Paris. The four Frenchmen appear to have coordinated the publication of particular editions among themselves. They apparently produced variant copies which were similar but which were intentionally distinctive only in the name of the bookseller in the imprint. Le Gras and Girard were brothers-in-law. [First University established in America; Education, Mexico] [Solis y Haro, Marcelino de].
First edition, and the first printing of the constitutions and regulations of the first University of the Americas, the University of Mexico, founded in 1551; the book is prefaced by a short history. Its creation has origin in the Real Cedula of Emperor Charles V of 1551, following the incentive of Fray Juan de Zumarraga, first Bishop of Mexico snd eventually the introducer of the printing press to Mexico (the first ever brought to America) and Antonio de Mendoza, first Viceroy of Mexico, although its inauguration was not until 1553, and shortly presided by Francisco de Cervantes Salazar, a significant Spanish humanist. Although no longer in existence today, both the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico and the Universidad Pontificia de Mexico considered themselves their successors. As can be understood, the erection of such a relevant institution, first of its kind in America was a significant event, and this first printing of their statutes an important source of information on it. Provenance: early inscription on half-title, partial marca de fuego on bottom edge; bookplate of collector Federico Gómez de Orozco (1891-1962) on front free endpaper. Rare, no copy traced at auction other than this in nearly 30 years. Medina, Mexico 1011.

MAURICEAU, François.
"While much in Mauriceau's treatise echoed the teachings of his predecessors, the work also included several important new features, such as Mauriceau's detailed analysis of the mechanism of labor, his introduction of the practice of delivering women in bed rather than in the obstetric chair, the earliest account of the prev … [Click Below for Full Description]

Later vellum using contemporary material with handwritten title to spine. First edition. An account of an East Indian and Middle Eastern journey made during the years of 1641-50. The German soldier Behr (d. 1692) departed from Leipzig, enlisted with the Dutch East Indian Company (VOC) and travelled to East India in 1644. From Batavia he sailed onwards to Java and Goa, and he served with the fleet of Johan Maetsuycker on the Malabar coast. He spent four years to Ceylon before visiting Persia and returning to the Netherlands. His account was published 18 years after his return, and "many sections of his journal resemble suspiciously closely the narratives of Johann Jacob Merklein and Johann Jacob Saar" (Howgego). The fine illustrations include views of Goa, St. Helena, and Kamron (Bandar Abbas), a cinnamon tree and flying fish. The appendix reprints the author's passport issued by Captain Jan van der Laen, as well as an alphabetical index. - Somewhat browned throughout due to paper. Covers slightly warped. It also contains the first scientific theory of magnetism". "The most comprehensive of all Descartes'works. Dedicated to the Princess Elizabeth, its three treatises embrace the whole of his philosophy, with the exception of the moral. Descartes'design in this treatise was the elaboration of a general theory which would account for the creation and the structur of the world. At the outset he scorfully rejected the whole apparatus of qualitates occultae, employed so freely by the scholastics, and in its place he tried to substitute a rational explanation of the phenomena of nature grounded upon human intelligence and erected upon the mathematical model. In this way he indicated the only solid path ever pursued by physical science, namely, its reduction to the laws of mathematics. On account of its intelligible assuptions, the theory established by Descartes withstook for more than a century all efforts to dislodge it. Fundamentally it assumed all space to be filled with matter, and this, having been endowed in the beginning with motion, has in course of time fallen into a series of vortices in which the s … [Click Below for Full Description]

Faithorne sculp)folded, 40 pp. + pp. 40,b-m, pp. 41-44 + 2 plates; 146 pp. + 1 blank + 1 plate; (8), 261, (1) pp. + 1 blank + 13 plates; 86 pp. + 1 blank + 8 plates; (16), 174 pp. + 1 blank; 42 pp. + 1 blank + 1 plate; 64 pp + 5 plates; (4), 365, (15 - Indices, incl. errata and "Scripturae Sacrae") pp. + 1 blank. - I.e. fully complete, with all 30 folded, engraved plates (depicting diagrams), all half-titles, and all blanks. Conforming exactly to the Macdonald&Hargreaves collation (our copy without the "Quadratura Circuli", which, according to Macdonald&Hargreaves, is "probably a later insertion", but which "is included in some copies and has a title-page of it's own". Copies without this part, which does not actually belong to the edition, are early and more desireable. Most copies have this later inserted part and thus 31 plates). ¶ The extremely scarce first edition of the first collected edition of Hobbes' works, being the most desirable, the most sought-after and by far the most important. It is to this collected edition that one still refers when quoting Hobbes' work … [Click Below for Full Description]

The principia philosophia contains Descartes'famous vortex theory by which he tried to reconcile Copernican astronomy with biblical teaching. In this way he indicated the only solid path ever pursued by physical science, namely, its reduction to the laws of mathematics... On account of its intelligible assuptions, the theory established by Descartes withstook for more than a century all efforts to dislodge it. Fundamentally it assumed all space to be filled with matter, and this, having been endowed in the beginning with motion, has in course of time fallen into a series of vortices in which the sun … [Click Below for Full Description]
