HOBBES, THOMAS. - [CONTAINING THE EDITIO PRINCEPS OF THE LATIN TRANSLATION OF "LEVIATHAN"]
Amsterdam, Apud Ioannem Blaeu, 1668. 4to. All eight parts bound in two excellent, contemporary full vellum bindings with yapp edges and neat handwritten titles to spines. Some sections of leaves quite browned, due to the paper quality, but the greater part of the leaves (and all the plates) is crisp and bright. An excellent copy. Woodcut printer's device to title-page, woodcut initials an vignettes, woodcut and engraved text-illustrations (diagrams).

(4) pp., folded engraved portrait of Hobbes (W. Faithorne sculp)folded, 40 pp. + pp. 40,b-m, pp. 41-44 + 2 plates; 146 pp. + 1 blank + 1 plate; (8), 261, (1) pp. + 1 blank + 13 plates; 86 pp. + 1 blank + 8 plates; (16), 174 pp. + 1 blank; 42 pp. + 1 blank + 1 plate; 64 pp + 5 plates; (4), 365, (15 - Indices, incl. errata and "Scripturae Sacrae") pp. + 1 blank. - I.e. fully complete, with all 30 folded, engraved plates (depicting diagrams), all half-titles, and all blanks. Conforming exactly to the Macdonald&Hargreaves collation (our copy without the "Quadratura Circuli", which, according to Macdonald&Hargreaves, is "probably a later insertion", but which "is included in some copies and has a title-page of it's own". Copies without this part, which does not actually belong to the edition, are early and more desireable. Most copies have this later inserted part and thus 31 plates). ¶ The extremely scarce first edition of the first collected edition of Hobbes' works, being the most desirable, the most sought-after and by far the most important. It is to this collected edition that one still refers when quoting Hobbes' work … [Click Below for Full Description]

DESCARTES (R.)
The principia philosophia contains Descartes'famous vortex theory by which he tried to reconcile Copernican astronomy with biblical teaching. It also contains the first scientific theory of magnetism". "The most comprehensive of all Descartes'works. Dedicated to the Princess Elizabeth, its three treatises embrace the whole of his philosophy, with the exception of the moral. Descartes'design in this treatise was the elaboration of a general theory which would account for the creation and the structur of the world. At the outset he scorfully rejected the whole apparatus of qualitates occultae, employed so freely by the scholastics, and in its place he tried to substitute a rational explanation of the phenomena of nature grounded upon human intelligence and erected upon the mathematical model. In this way he indicated the only solid path ever pursued by physical science, namely, its reduction to the laws of mathematics. On account of its intelligible assuptions, the theory established by Descartes withstook for more than a century all efforts to dislodge it. Fundamentally it assumed all space to be filled with matter, and this, having been endowed in the beginning with motion, has in course of time fallen into a series of vortices in which the s … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rynaga, Nicolás Mati?as del Campo y de la] Rinaga, Nicolas Mathias del Campo y de la
Por Mateo de Espinosa y Artega, En Madrid, 1668. First edition. In later half leather. Title lettered gilt on spine. [2], 53 ff. Best account for the history of the Peruvian Rynaga and Campo Godoy families until the mid-seventeenth century, who were among the most prominent and influential families of the Viceroyalty since the earliest times of the colonial period, and held the office of Protector of Indians. The Rynaga (Larrinaga or Reinaga) family was linked to the protectorship institution as advocates for Indians. Nicolás Mati?as del Campo y de la Rynaga (Lima, c. 1630-1682) (Novoa, 2016), the author of the present book, and other memoirs, and apologies which are among most important sources for the general history of Peru and the protectorship institution, also served as Protector of Indians. Nevertheless in Memorial apologético, histórico, jurídico y político (c. 1672), his most known and cited work, he defends the compulsory public work, the so-called mita system, and argues in favor of the use of Indian workers especially at the Potosi silver mine. The author's maternal great-grandfather, Juan de la Rynaga Salazar (1505/11-1600) arrived in America in 1534 to participate in the conquest of Peru and Chile. As a supporter of the royalist cause, and the New Laws to prevent the exploitation and mistreatment of the indigenous peoples of the Americas (Leyes Nuevas; 1524), he gained two encomiendas (grant of monopolies on the labour of Indians) in Huánuco, and became appointed to various administrative and judicial offices (corregidor, alcalde, alcalde ordinario) in Osorno, … [Click Below for Full Description]

SANTINELLI BARTOLOMEO.
Romae, Apud Success. Mascardi, 1668. In 8°, cart. coevo; pp. (16), 139, (5).
