[SOREL (Charles)]

Welsch, Georg Hieronymus
1668. Antique old book. Please see all the photos. EXTREME RARE, ORIGINAL, AUTHENTIC ANTIQUE Sylloge curationum . medicinalium Welsch, Georg Hieronymus The principal medical writings of the German physician and oriental scholar Georg Hieronymus Welsch (1624-77), including his biography, published a year after his death. "The author [was] a learned German doctor and one of the earliest members of the 'Societas Naturae Curiosum'" (Duveen, p. 617). Welsch, the son of an Augsburg pharmacist, studied classical and oriental languages, philosophy and medicine in Tübingen, Strasbourg and Padua, during which time he visited Central Italy and Rome. He returned to Augsburg to practice medicine, but due to an illness (possibly a form of depression) he was unable to maintain a regular practice and instead shifted his efforts into the field of writing. A correspondent of Leibniz's, he is also remembered as a translator of Avicenna. - The "Sylloge", which had first appeared in the previous year, is an extensive collection of medical works by earlier writers, several here making their first appearance in print: treatises by Marcel Cumanus, Hieronymus Martius, Achilles Gasser (the supporter of Copernicus and Rheticus), Ulrich Rumler, and Hieronymus Reusner, as well as a another by Welsch himself. This is the second issue; although it ends with "Finis", it wants a final part (19, [8] pp.). - Bound with this is Welsch's massive two-part work "Consiliorum medicinalium" (a posthumous 1698 re-issue) and (with its own 1676 title-page and issued separately) "Exotericarum curationum". The first par … [Click Below for Full Description]

La plupart de ces planches représentent des oiseaux et font de ce livre "the first work by an English author to add illustrations to a list of birds" (Norman). FRENCH, Nicholas
n.p., Louvain, 1668. Woodcut headpiece and capital. Later calf-backed marbled boards, edges red; interior trimmed, although no losses. Dated bookplate of the North Library (1860). First edition. The author, Nicholas French, provides a detailed account of the poor treatment of the Irish during the Restoration. He explains how in 1660 Protestant lords placed Irish Catholic landowners in prison in order to seize their property after the monarchy was restored. Written in the format of a letter, the Bishop ultimately calls for a total reversal of the Act of Settlement (1662) and the Act of Explanation (1665), which allowed Protestants loyal to the newly restored monarchy of Charles II to reclaim their estates in Ireland. French (1604-1678) was the Roman Catholic Bishop of Ferns. After war broke out in Ireland in 1641 he, along with several other Catholic clerics and gentry, helped to organise the rebels into a more cohesive political movement with the intention of attaining freedom of religion and legal equality for Catholics and self-government for Ireland. During the Civil War, French tried to promote a peace treaty with the Royalists at the same time as a more vigorous prosecution of the war in Ireland. Though a Treaty was signed with the Royalists in 1648, the English Parliamentarian conquest of Ireland began in 1649 during which Catholic clergy were executed. French, along with many other Catholics, moved to the Continent. The Monarchy was restored in1660, but under the Parliamentary Acts only a "favored minority" of Irish Catholic Royalists were returned their confiscated … [Click Below for Full Description]

1668. Please read description & Review all photos. EXTREMELY RARE!! lowest price to come to market in over 25 years 1668 An Essay Towards a Real Character, and a Philosophical Language By John Wilkins Printed Rotal Society The work is in five parts, of which the fourth contains the discussion of the "real character" and "philosophical language". The third deals with "philosophical grammar". The last part is the "alphabetical dictionary". It was compiled by William Lloyd. An Essay towards a Real Character, and a Philosophical Language (London, 1668) is the best-remembered of the numerous works of John Wilkins, in which he expounds a new universal language, meant primarily to facilitate international communication among scholars, but envisioned for use by diplomats, travelers, and merchants as well. Unlike many universal language schemes of the period, it was meant merely as an auxiliary to--not a replacement of--existing natural languages. Condition: Overall very good condition. Beautifully bound, Please see photos. John Wilkins (1614-1672) was an Anglican clergyman, natural philosopher and author, and was one of the founders of the Royal Society. He was Bishop of Chester from 1668 until his death.

HEYLYN, Peter
1668 1ed William Laud Cyprianus Anglicus England Canterbury Heylyn Prynne FOLIO Peter Heylyn’s ‘Cyprianus Anglicus’ is a strong defense of William Laud against William Prynne’s ‘Canterburies Doome.’ Prynne was highly critical of Laud. Even though King Charles I admitted that he put too much trust in Laud, and Laud’s actions helped create divisions in the Church, Heylyn still came to the defense of Laud. Most known for his “Cosmographia,” Peter Heylin writes this defense of Laud against Prynne’s and Laud’s execution. This account of Laud’s life and work depicts Laud’s attempt to enforce conformity within the Church of England, but the King’s decrees and commands did little to help the church, in fact, it created more of a divide. This work serves as a defense not only for Laud, but for the King’s actions and policies as well.
