Henri II de Lorraine Duc de GUISE
First edition, uncommon. A title sticker with the arms of the Duke of Guise, Henry II of Lorraine (1614-1664). These memoirs were published by the Duke's secretary, the Sieur de Saint-Yon, who asked Philippe Goibeau to draft them. It will be noted, however, that Augustin Calmet, (bbl lorraine 594) does not doubt that these memoirs are in the duke's hands. Good impression in large print.Binding full brown sheepskin speckled and icy contemporary. Back with nerves richly adorned. Title piece in brown morocco. Narrow slot with the bit in the head. Last box split narrowly on the upper joint. Missing one-third of the title coin. 3 corners slightly blunted. Pale letters with golden pencils were added where the ones in the title coin are missing, namely ME before MOIRE and G de Guise. Slight trace of pale wetting from p.122 in the upper margin, on a few leaves, then appearing erratically; this wetting becomes yellow from p. 744 to the end and is more pronounced.Ex libris with 18th century weapons: SRI comes from Wiser eer Dinand Andreas."These Memoirs deal with the Naples expedition, where the Duke of Guise tries to make the claims of the House of Lorraine accepted on the kingdom of the Two Sicilies and his attempt ends with a captivity among the Spaniards" (Sources de the history of France, 785). Here is what the Abbe Gallois says in the Journal des Savants in 1668: "It must be admitted that there are in these Memoirs I do not know what, which can not be expressed and which is not ordinarily found in the stories, whether that comes from the particular genius of M. de Guise, or fro … [Click Below for Full Description]

BORELLI, Giovanni Alfonso.
Bologna; Messina: Giacopo Monti; [np], 1667; [after 29 February, 1668]. First edition. First edition of the first published book on the laws of percussion, and containing important hitherto unpublished material from the lectures of Galileo and Torricelli. This copy is bound with Borelli's very rare Risposta, intended as a supplement to De vi percussionis (it was issued without a separate title-page), which contains his reply to criticisms by Stefano degli Angeli of Borelli's views on the motion of bodies in free fall under gravity. "In this, Borelli's first book on mechanics, he quotes Galileo's youthful work on percussion, the fourth Dialogo, and lectures by Torricelli. As well as the detailed discussion of impact, the book deals with the dynamics of falling bodies, vibration, gravity, fluid mechanics, magnetism, and pendular motion ... he gives the name resilience for the first time to a number of problems now classed under this name" (Roberts & Trent). This is "the earliest book on the laws of percussion, which undoubtedly influenced John Wallis who, in 1668, published his discovery of the laws governing the percussion of non-elastic bodies, and Christiaan Huygens, who deals with the percussion of elastic bodies in his treatise De motu corporum ex percussione, published in 1669' (Zeitlinger I, 174). Thanks to the Risposta, Borelli 'can be credited to be the first person to have examined in quantitative detail the deflection that falling bodies undergo due to the earth's diurnal rotation' (Theo Gerkema, On Borelli's analysis concerning the deflection of falling bodies, 20 … [Click Below for Full Description]

In 1648, he was made warden of Wadham College, Oxford, where he became intimate with Boyle, Wren and Evelyn. In 1656 he married Cromwell's sister. MAURICEAU, François.
Chez Jean Henault, Jean d'Houry, Robert de Ninville, Jean Baptiste Coignard, Paris. The Dedication Copy of the first edition of this groundbreaking medical work which ?established obstetrics as a science? (G&M). This is a superb copy in a presentation binding of contemporary red morocco stamped with the name of the dedicatees?Les Maistres Chirurgiens Jurez de Paris?and with three signed inscriptions by the author at the end of the printed dedication, announcing the publication of his work?s later 17th century revised editions. ?This book was without question the most practical, explicit andaccurate of the then known treatises on midwifery? (Cutter &Viets, A Short History of Midwifery, p. 51). Mauriceau was ?thefirst to write on tubal pregnancy, epidemic puerperal fever, andthe complications that arise in labor from misplacement of theumbilical cord?? (Le Fanu, Notable Medical Books from the LillyLibrary, p. 85). Mauriceau popularised the idea of delivery in bed rather than on a birth stool, and while recommending the reading of other learned authors, cautioned that ?the most part of them, having never practised the art they undertake to teach, resemble?those geographers who give us the description of many countries which they never saw? ?While much in Mauriceau?s treatise echoed the teachings of his predecessors, the work also included several important new features, such as Mauriceau?s detailed analysis of the mechanism of labor, his introduction of the practice of delivering women in bed rather than in the obstetric chair, the earliest account of the prevention of congeni … [Click Below for Full Description]

1668. Genital man, penis, uterus, baby Engraving / etching on verge type hand laid paper with watermark. Description: This old antique medical anatomy print originates from Andreas Vesalius collected works: "Opera omnia anatomica & chirurgica", edited by Ed. H. Boerhaave (1668-1738) & B.S. Albinus (1697-1770), Leiden, published by J. du Vivie and J. & H. Verbeek, 1725. This work is appreciated for its beauty and careful preparation in which the human figures which are placed in classical poses and landscapes, while the display of the structures are based on Vesalius' direct observations during five years of dissection at Padua. Its contemporary impact was enormous. It was almost instantly relegated to history and the way was open for the development of modern medicine. At this point we still carry most of the plates from this famous and exceedingly rare work. Each plate comes with the corresponding print index if applicable. Please inquire if you are looking for a specific themes not exhibited in our ebay shop or website.Artists and Engravers: Andreas Vesalius / van Wesel / Wezel (1514-1564) was a Belgian / Flemish anatomist, physician, and author of one of the most influential books on human anatomy, De humani corporis fabrica (On the Structure of the Human Body). Vesalius is often referred to as the founder of modern human anatomy. On Wikepedia you will find additional information. TACITUS, Cornelius
1668 Tacitus Annals Histories Roman Empire Nero Caligula ROME Plantin HUGE FOLIO “The more corrupt the state, the more numerous the laws.” ― Tacitus, The Annals Cornelius Tacitus was a 1st-century Roman historian who is now remembered for his two major works – ‘Annals’ and ‘Histories’ – in which he examines the lives and political careers of important Roman emperors such as Tiberius, Nero, and Claudius. By many accounts, Tacitus is considered the greatest Roman historian, not only by the accuracy of his content, but through demonstrating the psychological nature of ancient Roman politics. ‘Histories’ is one of the first written accounts to discuss the Great Jewish Revolt, an account that openly records combative attitudes between Jews and other cultures. ‘Annals’ was Tacitus’s final work and covers the era following the death of Caesar Augustus, including the reigns of Claudius, Caligula, and Nero. It is also the earliest known secular history to mention Jesus Christ in which Tacitus connects Nero to the persecution of early Christians. This 1668 edition is incredibly desirable! Published by Plantin Press, this huge, folio edition is a reissue of the 1627 Justus Lipsius printing, edited by decorative initials throughout and a thoroughly detailed index at the end. Cordier, Sinica, col. 912; WorldCat (2 copies); not in Löwendahl; Lust. First and only edition of a rare account on the confinement and death of cardinal Charles Thomas Maillard de Tournon (1668-1710), written by the Italian friar Giovanni Pellegrino Dandi (1664-1726).In 1702 Tournon was appointed by the Roman Catholic church to promote the Catholic faith in China and the East Indies, to establish harmony among the missionaries there and to enforce the decision of the Holy Office against the further toleration of the so-called Chinese rites among the native Christians. He headed for India (Pondicherry) in 1703 and later went to the Coromandel Coast. On 11 July 1704 he set sail for China by way of the Philippine Islands, arriving at Macau on 2 April, and at Beijing on 4 December 1705. The Kangxi Emperor received him kindly at first, but upon hearing that he came to abolish the Chinese rites among the native Christians, he demanded from all missionaries on pain of immediate expulsion a promise to retain these rites. At Rome the Holy Office had meanwhile decided against the rites on 20 November 1704, and being acquainted with this decision, the legate issued a decree at Nanjing on 25 January 1707, obliging the missionaries under pain of excommunication to abolish these rites. Thereupon, the emperor ordered Tournon to be imprisoned at Macau and sent some Jesuit missionaries to Rome to protest against the decree. Tournon died in his prison, shortly after being informed that he had been created cardinal on 1 August 1707. The mission and legation of Tournon is described in detail … [Click Below for Full Description]

MAURICEAU, François
Paris: Chez Jean Henault, Jean d'Houry, Robert de Ninville, Jean Baptiste Coignard, 1668. <p>The Dedication Copy of the first edition of this groundbreaking medical work which "established obstetrics as a science" (G&M). This is a superb copy in a presentation binding of contemporary red morocco stamped with the name of the dedicatees--Les Maistres Chirurgiens Jurez de Paris--and with three signed inscriptions by the author at the end of the printed dedication, announcing the publication of his work's later 17th century revised editions. "This book was without question the most practical, explicit and accurate of the then known treatises on midwifery" (Cutter & Viets, <em>A Short History of Midwifery</em>, p. 51). Mauriceau was "the first to write on tubal pregnancy, epidemic puerperal fever, and the complications that arise in labor from misplacement of the umbilical cord'' (Le Fanu, <em>Notable Medical Books from the Lilly Library</em>, p. 85). Mauriceau popularised the idea of delivery in bed rather than on a birth stool, and while recommending the reading of other learned authors, cautioned that "the most part of them, having never practised the art they undertake to teach, resemble...those geographers who give us the description of many countries which they never saw". "While much in Mauriceau's treatise echoed the teachings of his predecessors, the work also included several important new features, such as Mauriceau's detailed analysis of the mechanism of labor, his introduction of the practice of delivering women in bed rather than in the obstetric chair, the earlie … [Click Below for Full Description]

On the upper edge of the first free end-paper, the ownership inscription (e libris, which is superior Latin) of Toby Chauncy, Carter’s father-in-law. This is the first collected (Latin) edition of Hobbes’ works. (A complete English edition wouldn’t be published until Molesworth’s sixteen-volume London edition, 1839-1845.) It was published in Amsterdam because Hobbes had been banned from publishing in England on account of the alleged heresy of Leviathan (1651).
