BRAHE, Tycho]/RESEN, Peder Hansen
Copenhagen: H. Gordianus, 1668. * DSB II.404; J. R. Christiansen, “The Celestial Palace of Tycho Brahe,” Scientific American 204 no. 2 (1961), 118-128, and On Tycho’s Island (2000. Scarce first and only edition of this work on Danish antiquities, of considerable interest to the history of astronomy for containing extensive material on Tycho Brahe and his island observatory. The fact that the astronomer receives such extensive attention in a work in which the spotlight would normally be focused on royal and historical monuments testifies to the great prestige Tycho enjoyed in his native land.Located on the island of Hven, Brahe’s castle-observatory—the “Uraniborg”—was the seat of many of his landmark astronomical discoveries, and is described and pictured in a number of plates. Also pictured is a map of the island, Brahe’s most famous globe—over 5 ft. in diameter—and architectural plans of the buildings. The latter were destroyed shortly after Tycho left Denmark, making their record here all the more valuable. The large engraving of the Copenhagen observatory (opp. p. 197), where Ole Römer would soon be making observations, is among the earliest (if not the earliest) depictions of this building. The structure was destroyed by fire in 1728.In addition to these valuable documents for the design and operation of Uraniborg, the work contains what seems to be the earliest bibliography of Brahe’s writings (p. 383ff.), a life of the astronomer, and a previously unpublished letter by Brahe to his former teacher Caspar Peu … [Click Below for Full Description]

[New Netherland]:
Amsterdam: Jacques Benjamin, 1668.. 241,[2]pp. Numerous in-text engravings. Small quarto. Later half vellum and marbled boards. Scattered dampstaining, else very good. The most complete and detailed contemporary account of the Anglo-Dutch war from 1664 to 1667, when the Treaty of Breda brought it to an end. This work was first published in Dutch in 1667, although this first French edition of the following year probably made the information much more generally available. It is of particular American interest for the description of the loss of New Netherland, giving an account of the capture of New York and the surrender of Netherland, of which this and the preceding Dutch version are the first published accounts. It also prints a list of vessels and goods captured by the British in America, and accounts of De Ruyter's voyage to the West Indies, affairs in Barbados, the war in Europe, and the capture of Surinam by the Dutch. Sbarra, Francesco.
Vienna, M. Cosmerovius, 1668. Folio. (16), 105, (3) pp. With folding engr. title page and 23 folding engr. plates by Matthäus Küsell after Ludovico Burnacini. Marbled half calf (c. 1900) with giltstamped title to gilt spine. This splendid work, published on the occasion of the formal opening of the Court Theatre in 1667, contains the libretto and stage designs of the eponymous opera, produced in honor of the marriage between Emperor Leopold I. and Infanta Margareta Teresia of Spain. The "Pomo d'oro" is considered one of the 17th century's most significant achievements of the musical stage; Burnacini's imaginative stage designs are known only through these illustrations, congenially engraved by Küsell. The two additional plates which Vinet mentions, depicting interior views of the auditorium, are not contained in any of the copies cnsulted for comparison; they were produced only after Küsell had completed the series and were added to a very small number of copies. As they are not mentioned by the printed table of plates (ff. B1r-B2v), the work may be considered complete thus. - Occasional browning and waterstaining; several plates with signs of old remargining and restoration; slight defect to one plate (some loss to image, retouched). Attractive, uncommonly well-preserved copy in comparison with the five copies sold at auction during the past three decades (four of which were incomplete, wanting the engr. title page or one of the 23 stage-designs). From the collection of the Viennese brewer Joseph Wuensch (1843-1916) with his bookplate and library label on the front pastedo … [Click Below for Full Description]
