DESCARTES, René.
Paris: Chez Theodore Girard, dans la grand salle du palais ... Avec privilege du Roy. 1668 [lvi], 1-(479)pp. Engr. title, woodcut illus., one folding table. 4to. Contemp. full sprinkled calf, spine gilt in compartments & with raised bands; some minor expertly executed repairs to spine & extremities. A v.g. copy.Descartes' monumental philosophical treatise was first published in Latin, as Principia Philosophiae, in 1644. It expanded on ideas first considered in Discours de la méthode pour bien conduire sa raison ..., of 1637. It was in Principia Philosophiae that Descartes defined his theory of conscious reasoning, neatly encapsulated in the now iconic phrase, cogito, ergo sum - 'I think, therefore I am'. The first French edition of Principia Philosophiae appeared in 1647, translated by Descartes' friend in Paris, Abbé Claude Picot, 1614-1688. It was slightly expanded from the Latin edition, in that it included as a preface, a letter from Descartes to his translator in which he discusses the substance of his philosophy, and reaction to it by fellow scholars.

The exceedingly rare first separate edition of the New Testament in Armenian, remaining the only complete Armenian printed Bible until 1705 (Lane, The Diaspora of Armenian Printin 1512-2012). The present publication still ranks among the most important publications in Armenian.A counsel of Armenian bishops, assembled in 1662, ordered the bible to be printed in Europe. Armenian printing culture left their traditional base in Italy for the Netherlands due to Papal censorship and printing innovations in Amsterdam: "With a view to the planned Bible, Voskan commissioned a third type cut for the press, a Mediaen notrgir, the first type ever cut in that style, An upright cursive. On 11 March 1666 Voskan could finally begin printing the Bible, which he completed on 13 October 1668: the first Bible ever printed in Armenian". (Lane, The Diaspora of Armenian Printin 1512-2012).The establishment of Armenian printing in Amsterdam owes its origin, much as does the printing of Hebrew books, to the necessity of escaping from the the Roman Inquisition, which in Italy controlled the ma … [Click Below for Full Description]

Quarto (187 × 153 mm). Later pinkish-yellow glazed boards, pale green morocco label, compartments formed by a single gilt rule, gilt flower tool to the compartments. Engraved portrait frontispiece and elaborate emblematic additional title page, 15 engraved plates, the view of Batavia folding. A little rubbed at the extremities, some browning, but overall a very good, clean copy. First and only edition, well-represented institutionally, but extremely uncommon in commerce with just one copy at auction in the last 50 years. Fascinating account of the East Indies and Persia by a German soldier in the service of the VOC. "Behr enlisted in 1641 and sailed to Batavia about two years later … he went on to serve in Java, as well as with the fleet of Johann Maetsuycker on the Malabar Coast. Apart from a voyage to Persia, Behr spent four of his six years with the VOC in Ceylon" (Howgego). The originality of parts of Behr's account have been questioned, with comparisons being drawn with the published journals of Johann Jacob Merklein, and in particular with Johann Jacob Saar's record of his service in Ceylon. Behr had returned to Europe in 1650, but his narrative was not published for another 18 years, the most likely explanation for any plagiarism would be to suspect editorial light fingers rather than to cast doubt upon the authentici … [Click Below for Full Description]

Wallenstein. GUALDO PRIORATO, Galeazzo.
Rostock, Joachim Wildium, 1668. 8vo. 135 pp. Slight browning on the title and some minor spotting. 20th-century half vellum, spine with red and brown label, marbled boards, red edges (Gust. Hedberg). From the library of Fredrik Vult von Steyerns, with his gilt monogram on front board. VD17 1:009329U. Warmholtz 3946 note. First latin edition of Gualdo Priorato?s biography of Albrecht Wallenstein, duke of Friedland (1583-1634). The Italian original was published in 1643 and the latin translation is made by Josua Arnd (1626-87). Gualdo Priorato?s biography is still one of the main near contemporary sources to the life and fate of Wallenstein, the famous ?Generalissimo? from the Thirty Years War, who was murdered in Eger in 1634. Galeazzo Conte Gualdo Priorato (1606-78) was an Italian soldier and historian. He took part of almost the whole of the Thirty Years War, and was in the service of Moritz of Nassau and of Wallenstein, but also on the protestant side. After the war he wrote several historical works about the war. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Paris, C. Lambin, (1668-)1669.. 4to. (8), 152 pp. With engr. portrait frontispiece of Anne Marie Louise d'Orleans and numerous pretty woodcut initials and tailpieces. Contemp. richly gilt calf, gilt dentelle central cover decoration showing the Sacred Heart of Jesus, gilt spine on five raised bands (upper spine-end and corners repaired). Marbled pastedowns.. Second, enlarged edition of this rare work on precious stones and pearls found in the East and West Indies, written by a Parisian "marchand orphevre" in Paris and first published in 1661. Both editions are dedicated to "La Grande Mademoiselle" Anne Marie Louise d'Orleans, Duchess of Montpensier and niece of Louis XIII, with her finely engraved portrait, which is here more delicately executed (by Nicolas de Larmessin, in 1664). The large chapter devoted to pearls and pearl fishing cites the Persian Gulf and several specific places there as among the main locations of pearl fishing: "on pesche les perles en divers endroits du monde. Dans le Golfe Persique, principalement aux environs de l'Isle d'Ormus & Bassora: aupres de Baroyn [i.e., Bahrain], Catiffa, Iuffa, Camaron, & autres lieux de ce Golfe [...]" (p. 68). This chapter is here "augmented with an appendix which recounts the history of the Spanish conquest in the New World and additionally gives remarks on pearl fisheries, natural history, and production [...] New chapters comprise Ch. 17, on the pricing of diamonds according to size and quality, and Ch. 18 on pricing of pearls.
