Rotterdam, Gedrukt bij Johannes Naeranus, 1668. 12mo. 498,(6 blank) p. Vellum 12.5 cm (Ref: Geerebaert 138,11,6; OiN 362) (Condition: Binding scuffed, spotted and soiled. Frontispiece removed. Oval stamp on the title. Some worming in the blank upper margin, occasionally nibbling at letters. Paper yellowing) (Note: The late antique grammarian Aelius Donatus (4th century A.D) wrote not only a commentary on the plays of the Roman playwright Publius Terentius Afer, ca. 190-159 B.C., but also a short biography, in which he tells that Terentius was born in the Roman province Africa and that he came as a slave in the houshold of the senator Terentius Lucanus. He adopted his name when he was manumitted. Terentius is the author of 'fabulae palliatae', which means 'plays in Greek cloths'. He adapted Greek plays, especially those of the Greek playwright Menander, to the taste of the Romans. Six of his comedies have survived. For later generations he became a model for elegant Latin. His style was closer to everyday conversation than Plautus', an earlier contemporary comic playwright, whose style was more extravagant. He was quoted by Cicero, Horace, Persius and the Church Fathers. Ever since antiquity he lived also a long and influential life in schools as a model for Latin language and rhetoric. In the Middle Ages he was read for his moral sentences. He was imitated by the German abbess Hrotsvitha of Gandersheim (ca. 935 - ca. 973) in her 'Dramenbuch', with which she wanted to create a Christian alternative for the pagan comedies. With the coming of humanism Terentius enjoyed a renai … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ottima legatura coeva in piena pelle marmorizzata, doppio filetto oro sui piatti, dorso a nervi con titolo e ricchi fregi oro, tagli rossi. Esemplare assai puro e fresco.

BORELLI, Giovanni Alfonso
Messina [after 29 February, 1668]. 4to (235 x 170 mm), pp 37 [3, blank], with numerous woodcut illustrations in text; a very good uncut, unpressed copy in plain wrappers. First edition of this rare work, a response by Borelli to criticisms published by the mathematician Stefano degli Angeli regarding Borelli’s De vi percussionis (1667), and a work due to which Borelli ‘can be credited to be the first person to have examined in quantitative detail the deflection that falling bodies undergo due to the earth’s diurnal rotation’ (Theo Gerkema, On Borelli’s analysis concerning the deflection of falling bodies, 2009). The issue at the centre of Angeli’s criticisms and Borelli’s response concerns the path of a falling body in relation to the movement of the earth. The primary object of Angeli’s attack was the Jesuit astronomer Riccioli who, in his Astronomia Reformata of 1665, ‘provided a list of seventy-seven arguments against Copernicanism. The Jesuits had great difficulty accepting that different motions could be combined without one of them overpowering and annulling the effects of the other. A key feature of Riccioli’s position was that there were observable differences in the behaviour of bodies depending on whether the Earth was in motion or not. Since observations showed the effects he expected on a stationary Earth, he concluded that the Earth does not move. In this extreme form, his views about composition of motion were rather isolated ‘Following a preliminary essay sent anonymously to Riccioli in 1666, Borelli put forward his arguments in De vi percussionis (Bologna 16 … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

New edition, after the original appeared in Rouen in 1615; the Fantasies Bruscambille were published in 1626, also at Rouen. Jolie edition that joins the collection of Elzevier; she released presses Vleugart, printer Brussels. The end of this volume is occupied by a strong free piece Good manners of women s, and fills two pages.Bound in full morocco lemon late eighteenth signed Chambolle Duru. Back with nerves richly decorated with small irons. As an exhibit in red morocco, and dating black leather. Triple mentoring net on the dishes. Large inner frieze. Gilt edges.Magnificent example, well established, and a perfect freshness.Originally, these fantasies were haranguing the people speech to encourage them to come to the representations of the actors in the Hotel de Bourgogne; they shine through the joke, volubility, a slope convoluted style in the saucy and satire; these discourses also constituted prologues shows. Deslauriers was one of the actors of the Hotel de Bourgogne. From the library of Mr. La Roche-Lacarelle. Bookplates in number, a million and two C intertwined. Jean Pierre CAMUS
First Edition. From an illustrated portrait frontispiece. Rare. Absent the BN of France, the French catalogs, the British Library and English catalogs. Vellum full time. Smooth back silent. The book is a collection of 34 historical novels, each new being followed by Christian and moral reflections. Jean Pierre Camus is indeed the first to have used fiction, ie secular means in a spiritual edification. Camus believed in the virtues of entertainment effect, as new present in this book are exclusively literary, only "reflections" that follow remind us of the spiritual project (not religious), this is all the more surprising that the modern French novel was in its infancy. The style is simple, without affectation, and Plutarch mentions. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. RESPOUR, P. M. de
Paris, Langlois, Barbin, 1668. Ferguson. Bib. chemica, II, 256 : "The book had become extremely rare when it was translated by Henckel... A good deal of importance seems to have been attached to this book by the metallurgists of the time." WING, Vincent.
[1668-]1669 London: John Macock for George Sawbridge. First edition of "the most significant English astronomical work of its time" (ODNB). Wing's earliest works were Ptolemaic, but by 1651 he had accepted the fundamentals of Keplerian astronomy as modified by Ismael Boulliau. "Like many astronomers in the second half of the seventeenth century, Wing, following Boulliau and Seth Ward, opted for an 'empty-focus' variant of Kepler's second law, holding that a planet moving in an elliptical orbit describes equal angles in equal times about the focus not occupied by the sun. In works published in 1651 and 1656 Wing, adopting Boulliau's method, had his elliptical orbits, including that of the moon, generated in purely geometrical fashion by circles and epicycles. In his posthumously published Astronomia Britannica, however, he discarded the epicycles in favour of a refined version of the theory proposed by Ward in the latter's Astronomia geometrica (1656), in which the elliptical orbits were assumed to be physically generated. Wing's celestial mechanics contained a mixture of Cartesian and Keplerian components, with a rotating sun and celestial vortex pushing the planets around in their orbits" (DSB XIV 446). Newton owned a copy of the present work, 'heavily perused and dog-eared' according to Harrison (p. 300). "When in 1669 [Newton] read carefully through Vincent Wing's Astronomia Britannica (which among other innovations paraded a neat transfer of the modified Boulliau hypothesis to the ellipse's centre as a correcting factor on the central anomaly) he added to the endpa … [Click Below for Full Description]

BROWN, Thomas
(Amsterdam, Blaeu), 1668. Printing and the Mind of Man N°131. Willems 1784. Brunet 1, 1281. Caillet 1717.*****. In-12.
