[DANDI, Giovanni Pellegrino].
Cordier, Sinica, col. 912; WorldCat (2 copies); not in Löwendahl; Lust. First and only edition of a rare account on the confinement and death of cardinal Charles Thomas Maillard de Tournon (1668-1710), written by the Italian friar Giovanni Pellegrino Dandi (1664-1726).In 1702 Tournon was appointed by the Roman Catholic church to promote the Catholic faith in China and the East Indies, to establish harmony among the missionaries there and to enforce the decision of the Holy Office against the further toleration of the so-called Chinese rites among the native Christians. He headed for India (Pondicherry) in 1703 and later went to the Coromandel Coast. On 11 July 1704 he set sail for China by way of the Philippine Islands, arriving at Macau on 2 April, and at Beijing on 4 December 1705. The Kangxi Emperor received him kindly at first, but upon hearing that he came to abolish the Chinese rites among the native Christians, he demanded from all missionaries on pain of immediate expulsion a promise to retain these rites. At Rome the Holy Office had meanwhile decided against the rites on 20 November 1704, and being acquainted with this decision, the legate issued a decree at Nanjing on 25 January 1707, obliging the missionaries under pain of excommunication to abolish these rites. Thereupon, the emperor ordered Tournon to be imprisoned at Macau and sent some Jesuit missionaries to Rome to protest against the decree. Tournon died in his prison, shortly after being informed that he had been created cardinal on 1 August 1707. The mission and legation of Tournon is described in detail … [Click Below for Full Description]

GLAUBER, Johann Rudolf
75, [5, all blank], 15 pp. 8vo, attractive modern paste-paper wrappers. Amsterdam: J. Waesberge & the Widow E. Weyerstralt, 1668. First edition of this rare catalogue of the contents of the laboratory and the library of the great chemist Glauber (1604-70), which he was offering for sale due to ill health. This is a fascinating and unique record of the holdings of a mid-17th century chemical laboratory as well as of the scientific books in the library of one of the leading chemists of the period. In 1655, after having studied in chemical laboratories in Paris, Basel, Salzburg, and Vienna, Glauber (1604-70), moved to Amsterdam where he outfitted what was surely the most impressive laboratory in Europe. He "has justly been called the best practical chemist of his day and the first industrial chemist. His instructions for the improvement of laboratory technique were instrumental in preparing the way for the chemical revolution of the next century."-D.S.B., V, p. 419. The first 75 pages describe the contents of the laboratory including pharmacological preparations, numerous chemicals, and apparatus. The final fifteen pages list 42 titles in folio, 38 in quarto, 62 in octavo, and 25 in duodecimo, with an additional 32 titles of unbound 8vo books, including his own publications, all from Glauber's library. Fine copy. ❧ Duveen, p. 259-"Contains a description of apparatus and preparations for sale by Glauber. The list of books at the end is very interesting consisting mainly of books on natural science, published in German and Holland in the first half of the 17th century." Bound and dedicated to the Queen of France
The dedication copy bound and dedicated to the Queen of France, Marie-Therese d'Autriche the wife of the Sun King, Louis XIV. Sumptuous full red morocco, all edges gilt, with inner dentelles and marbled endpapers, Marie Therese's arms appear centrally on both boards with her cypher in the corners of the panels and five times in spine compartments with tiny fleur de lys within the triple fillet that forms the panels. A pencilled annotation by the French book collector the Comte de Lignerolles (1817-1893) on the verso of the first marbled endpaper notes the book's status as the dedication copy: a four page dedication to the Queen follows the title page. In her dedication Levesque praises the Queen in typically eulogistic terms for her 'rare Vertu' and the peace that she brings to Spain and France 'par la belle alliance de Vostre tres-haute, tre-illustre, tres devote, & tres-vertueuse Personne, avec le plus grand, & le plus invincible de tous les Monarques, Louis XIV, Roy de France, & de Navarre; Unissant les deux plus brillantes Couronnes de l'Univers'. Intended to bring an end to the war between France and Spain, the marriage in 1660 of Marie Therese ((known in English as Marie Theresa of Spain) and Louis produced an heir but very little happiness for either participant. This dedication by Levesque was made just after one of Marie-Therese's periodic moments of real power when she had assumed a Regency during Louis' absence on war service in 1667. Louis XIV remains one of the most well-known French monarchs due to his lavish lifestyle, many mistresses, political achievements … [Click Below for Full Description]

René DESCARTES
It is in 1644 that Descartes wrote in Latin Principia philosophiae, with attention to clarify and give a sound and rigorous basis to philosophy, to erect the unshakable foundations. The first premise of philosophical research, this is the reason, and his method of deduction. The Cartesian project is a project of universal knowledge, not only philosophical. Principia follow the Discourse on Method (1636) and Meditations (1641). The aim of the work is prodigious, Descartes wants to provide a new metaphysics based on the cogito, which creates a new classification of knowledge and a new moral reflection, which it operates by the revolution, gave birth to the Enlightenment . Leti Gregorio
Sn., sl, 1668.

George Buchanan
Utrecht: Petrum Elzevirium, 1668 A good early edition of this important work on Scottish history, first published in 1582. George Buchanan was a renowned 16th century scholar who, among many other appointments, tutored both the young Mary Queen of Scots and James VI. This is the first history of Scotland written by a Scot and is notable, particularly for the accounts from his own lifetime. It is in Latin - a language that he was so at ease with that he has been called the greatest writer in Latin of the 16th century. This copy is in a possibly contemporary full leather binding with raised bands, blind-stamped designs and title label to spine. The binding is worn, particularly at the spine joints, top and bottom of the spine, corners and edges. There is a bookplate of George Govan Esq to the front pastedown and possibly contemporary scholarly notes to the reverse of the fep and the initial blank. With title page in red and black; introductions and page of dedications 68pp; history pp 1-750; index 38pp; final blank. There is tape over the front endpaper joint and paper repair to the top of the fep and the verso of the title page. The top margin is quite closely trimmed in places; there is very minor worm damage to the side margin of pp 156-166; and a paper flaw to the side margin of pp 487-96. Contents are very clean; paper has light toning.
