DESCARTES, René (1596-1650)
Paris: Chez Charles Angot, 1668. Hardcover. Very Good+. 4to (223 x 160mm). 303pp., [xxiii, of tables]. Full contemporary calf; well rubbed; tear to top of spine. Over 100 fine woodcut diagrams throughout, several full-page. Woodcut printer’s device to title; (small tear to title at upper right margin, slighty browned; slightly rubbed, corners bumped). From the collection of J. Richard D.M. Ex Bibliotheca (18th-century armorial rubber stamp to title and p. 3) possibly French, 1638-1739. Early Illustrated Edition of Descartes’ Discourse on the Method, one of the most influential works in the history of modern philosophy, and important to the evolution of natural sciences. This work features Descartes’ famous line “I think therefore I am,” which he wrote in French (Je pense donc je suis) thereby reaching a wider audience in his country than that of scholars. The Discours was originally published in Leiden in 1637. Published also in Paris, the same year as this edition, is an edition by Bobel and De Gras. Descartes started his line of reasoning by doubting everything, so as to assess the world from a fresh perspective, clear of any preconceived notions. In the Discourse, Descartes tackles the problem of skepticism, which had previously been studied by Sextus Empiricus, Al- Ghazali and Michel de Montaigne. The Discourse, divided into six parts, was intended as an introduction to three of his works Dioptrique, Météores and Géométrie. His statements of the elementary laws of matter and movement in the physical universe, the theory of vortices, and man … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ottima legatura coeva in piena pelle marmorizzata, doppio filetto oro sui piatti, dorso a nervi con titolo e ricchi fregi oro, tagli rossi.

Nouvelle edition. Very good. 12mo (140 x 85 mm). (32), 178 pp. With a portrait of Nostradamus and frontispiece engraving of the 1666 Fire of London, and of the execution of Charles I. Bound in contemporary, no doubt original, drab boards, spine lettered in manuscript, signs of wear (not objectionably so) and gentle use, with some underlining in the text. Rare in the original cartonnage binding, completely unsophisticated. Equally remarkable is the engraved frontispiece which is reproduced by Ian Wilson in his important biography: “Nostradamus: The Man Behind the Prophesies” (Macmillan, 2007, p. 259). Wilson describes the engraving thusly: “The images of Charles I's execution in 1649 and the Great Fire of London in 1666 shows that contemporaries accredited Nostradamus with having predicted both these events.” This edition contains, in addition to the XII "Centuries," the 141 "Presages" derived from those made by Nostradamus in 1555 et seq., as well as the "Other Predictions of Mr. Nostradamus for the current years in this century." This "Nouvelle edition" appeared the same year, and in the same format, as the Amsterdam edition referenced on the title-page (published by Jean Jansson). Dorbon, Bibliotheca Esoterica 349.

Chez Michel Bobin|& Nicolas Le Gras. - Chez Michel Bobin & Nicolas Le Gras, à Paris 1668, in-4 (17x22,5cm), (56) 477pp. VIEIRA, P. Antonio, S.J.
Lisbon, Na Officina de Ioam da Costa, 1668. - 4°, disbound. Woodcut arms of Portugal on title page, woodcut and typographical headpieces. Light dampstains. Short tear at lower edge of title page, touching rule. A few printed side-notes shaved. Overall good condition. 36 pp. *** FIRST EDITION. Vieira (1608-1697) is described by Boxer as "certainly the most remarkable man in the seventeenth-century Luso-Brazilian world" (A Great Luso-Brazilian Figure: Padre António Vieira, S.J., p. 4). Born in Lisbon, he moved to Bahia as a child and there became a Jesuit novice in 1623. By 1635, when he was ordained, he was already famous as a preacher, and when the Dutch withdrew from Brazil it was he who was chosen to preach the victory sermon. Vieira, a trusted advisor of D. João IV, was sent by him on diplomatic missions to France, Holland and Rome. Beginning in 1652 he spent nine years as a missionary in Maranhão, where he vehemently defended the rights of the Indians against the colonists who wanted to enslave them. As a result, the colonists managed to have him and all the other Jesuits in Pará and Maranhão deported in 1661. Back in Lisbon, his campaign for toleration of the New Christians (crypto-Jews) and his Sebastianist beliefs led to his trial by the Inquisition. He was found guilty, but the ascension of the future D. Pedro II as regent in 1668 led to his release. Vieira?s status as a diplomat and missionary would guarantee his letters a place in Portuguese history, but his style and content are also exceptional: his letters and state-papers are invaluable sources for the period, … [Click Below for Full Description]
