MERRETT, Christophoro [MERRET, Christopher]
Londoni [London]: Typis T. Roycroft, Impensis Cave Pulleyn, 1667.. Second edition. Small 8vo. (xxxii), 223, (1) pp. Recent panelled calf, spine with raised bands, gilt lettered red label, ex-John Crerar Library with their bookplate to the front pastedown featuring a de-accession stamp, plus their perforated stamp to the title which, all things considered, is relatively discreet, some early marginalia at intervals. Some light dampstaining to the front and rear, a decent copy overall. An important work, for although Merret provided very little in the way of commentary, this was one of the earliest printed catalogues of the British natural world and was the first systematic listing of the nation's birds and butterflies. Henrey, I pp. 98-100. Raven, pp. 311-338. Cf. Lisney, p. 27. The first edition, published the year before, is very rare as it is assumed many copies perished in the Great Fire of London. This is a variant issue of the second edition without mention of the edition on the title page and an abbreviated imprint.
