Item #3964 The Great Fire of London was a major conflagration that swept through the central parts of the English city of London, starting at the bakery of Thomas Farriner (or Farynor) on Pudding Lane shortly after midnight, and raged from Sunday, 2 September to Wednesday, 5 September 1666. The fire gutted the medieval City of London inside the old Roman city wall. It threatened, but did not reach, the aristocratic district of Westminster, Charles II's Palace of Whitehall, and most of the suburban slums. It consumed 13,200 houses, 87 parish churches, St Paul's Cathedral and most of the buildings of the City authorities. It is estimated to have destroyed the homes of 70,000 of the City's 80,000 inhabitants. The death toll is unknown but traditionally thought to have been small, as only six verified deaths were recorded, however, the social and economic problems created by the disaster were overwhelming. PHILALETHE, Eiraeneus.
Joannemm Janssonium, Amsterdam, 1667. [Click Below for Full Description]

SPRAT, Thomas.
FIRST EDITION, second state of p. 85 ('of' is not repeated in lines 6 and 7). Much more than simply a history of the Royal Society, Sprat's History places the founding of the society in its historical setting, includes edited versions of fourteen original papers by Hooke, Petty, and others, and embodies the experimental principles of Francis Bacon on which the society was based."The History is divided into three parts. The first part offers an extended critique of various approaches to natural philosophy from ancient times to the current day... The second part of the History provides an explanation of the origins of the Royal Society, its experimental method, and its purposes... Part three responds to particular social, cultural, and religious objections to experimental philosophy, and predicts future political and economic leadership for England based on the society's contributions" (ODNB).Wing S5032. SEMEDO, Alvarez
Lyon: Hierosme Prost, 1667. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Alvaro Semedo was a 17th-century Portuguese Jesuit missionary known for his mission to China. While there, he was persecuted for his attempts at conversion, imprisoned in an anti-Christian prison, and eventually shipped out of mainland China. During his temporary hiatus from China, he wrote a lengthy and thorough report of his time in China, 'The Universal History of China'. In it, Semedo describes Chinese society, accounts of foreign missionaries, and detailed description of the Manchu Invasion of Korea. Other topics include Chinese religious customs and Tartar wars with China, curiously focusing on the importance of Chinese cavalry in the successes of battle (Minuti, p.74). Originally published in 1638, this work was published in numerous European languages, including this first French edition in 1667 by Prost. [Attributes: First Edition]

NAPIER, John.
Edinburgh; Padua: Andrew Hart; Giacomo Cadorino, 1619; [1667]. First edition. First edition, extremely rare, of this complement to Napier's epoch-making Mirifici logorithmorum canonis descriptio (1614) - while the Descriptio gave the first ever table of logarithms, it was in the Constructio that Napier explained the method of their construction. It is here bound with the first edition of James Gregory's first mathematical work, highly important in the pre-history of calculus, and if anything even rarer than the Napier. "Probably no work has ever influenced science as a whole, and mathematics in particular, so profoundly as this modest little book [the Descriptio]. It opened the way for the abolition, once and for all, of the infinitely laborious, nay, nightmarish, processes of long division and multiplication, of finding the power and the root of numbers" (Waters, The Art of Navigation in England in Elizabethan and Early Stuart Times (1958), p. 402). "The 'Mirifici logorithmorum canonis constructio' is the most important of all of Napier's works, presenting as it does in a most clear and simple way the original conception of logarithms. It is, however, so rare as to be very little known, many writers on the subject never having seen a copy" (Macdonald, p. xvii). "Historically, it is important to note that in the Constructio the decimal notation is used with ease and power practically for the first time" (Henderson, p. 253). The second work in this volume is by the brilliant Scottish mathematician James Gregory. "Of British mathematicians of the seventeenth century, Gregory … [Click Below for Full Description]

GUTBIER, Aegidius
1667 1st ed SYRIAC Aramaic Bible New Testament Lexicon Latin Aegidius Gutbier Aegidius Gutbier was a 17th-century Germany historian known for his studies in orientalism. While he did not produce an extensive collection of written works, he did write two highly influential works including a Syriac New Testament and Syriac Bible lexicon. In order to fund and print these works, Gutbier established his own printing house in Hamburg, Germany. These two works were often published together, including this fine first edition example. Darlow and Moule provide an extensive description of Gutbier and his New Testament translation. “The reference is to two pieces, printed uniformly with this edition of the N.T. and sometimes appended to it – a lexicon (1667). Many variations occur in copies of this N.T. The engraved title belongs properly to those only which included the supplementary pieces, viz. the lexicon. According to the ADB, “Gutbier was one of the greatest orientalists of his age.” Item number: #4984 Price: $950 GUTBIER, Aegidius Novum Domini Nostri Jesu Christi Testamentum Syriace, Cum punctis Vocalibus & Versione Latina Matthæi, ita adornata, ut, unico hoc Evangelista intellecto, reliqvi totius Operis libri, sine interprete, facile intelligi possint: In gratiam Stusiosæ Juventutis . emendate editum, Accurante Ægidio Gutbirio, SS.
