VERMAARSCH, Joost.
Bierens de Haan 5021; Cat. Rijksmuseum III, p. 22; STCN (5 copies); cf. Berlin Kat. 2225 (1667 issue of 1664 ed.); not in BAL. Richly illustrated second edition of an architectural manual compiled by a master mason, first published in 1664 (the first edition was also reissued in 1667). Although the title-page calls it the first volume, Vermaarsch never published a second. He openly borrows from architectural classics, naming Scamozzi, Palladio and Viniola on his title-page. He discusses mathematical projection, architectural decoration, the five orders of columns of classical architecture, and more specifically the theories of Scamozzi, Palladio and Vignola, each treated in a separately paginated chapter. As a practicing master mason in Leiden the author's views are of special interest when he discusses the design of decorative brick and plaster work for bases and capitals of columns for doors, gateways, windows, etc., freezes, ceilings and other works of masonry. He notes that all these designs can be constructed with only the very simplest measuring tools. The plates clearly illustrate his points and provide numerous models for brick and plaster decorations. Very good copy with generous margins, with printed memorial label on the pastedown, stating that the book was presented to the mathematical society "Mathesis Scientiarum Genetrix" after Isaac La Lau's 1849 death by his son J.G. La Lau. Both were leading members of the society.

Carter, Sea of pearls, seven thousand years of the industry that shaped the Gulf, pp. 93-94; Sabin 73297; Sinkankas 5569. First edition of a "much esteemed and sought work" on precious metals, mining and gems, by a French goldsmith. Divided in two parts, the first part "is a mining & metallurgical treatise in which gold, silver, and mercury are described in respect to their mines and methods of mining, purification of ores by smelting or otherwise, and refinement of the metals. Special emphasis is laid upon the mines of the New World" (Sinkankas). The second part, divided into four books, describes numerous types of minerals and gems but also devotes several pages to bezoar stones and their supposed medical properties as described by Arab physicians. Of this part, the second book treats pearls and contains several remarks on the fresh-water pearls of Scotland, which were then highly esteemed. Nevertheless, as the author remarks "The most perfect [pearls] are fished in the Persian Gulf, between the island of Hormuz & Basra, near Qatifa, Gombroon & Julfar" (p. 35).Pierre de Rosnel was goldsmith-in-ordinary to King Louis XIII of France, otherwise little is known of him. In the final part of Le mercure indien he "provides a mathematical system for adjusting prices of diamonds upwards at a steepening rate with increasing weight" (Sinkankas), preceding the publication of the standard method of pricing as described by Tavernier.Thumbed and with a few ink stains on the pages and with water stains in the lower margin of the first half of the second part; nevertheless a very good cop … [Click Below for Full Description]

WITTIE, Robert.
York printed by Alice. Broad for Tho. Passenger, 1667. Second edition. 8vo (9.5 x 14cm) [16], 224pp., a few headlines shaved, an excellent copy in nineteenth century calf-backed marbled boards, A classic of English spa literature, penned by the Yorkshire physician Robert Wittie (1613-1684). This York-printed second edition is somewhat scarcer than the first edition, which was printed at London. "The publication of Scarbrough Spaw, for which Wittie is principally remembered, coincided with the Restoration of 1660. Mindful of his earlier allegiance he did not ask for royal patronage . The beneficial effects of Scarborough's mineral springs had been discovered barely ten years before Wittie settled in Hull and, after taking the waters himself, about 1637–8, he prescribed them for conditions ranging from convulsions to gout. Wittie claimed to have identified small amounts of vitriol, nitre, alum, salt, and iron in Scarborough's mineral water in experiments carried out in his laboratory by himself and a learned friend. However, Wittie's work was criticized by two men: William Simpson of York and George Tunstall of Newcastle . An acrimonious dispute developed: from published treatises that broke no bones, it descended to the coffee houses of York . The controversy seems to have done Wittie's York practice no harm, but the scene at Scarborough was changing. In addition to promoting the waters themselves, Wittie had pointed out the value of relaxation in a bracing climate with congenial company, and these attractions gradually became more important" (ODNB). Thomas Broad was printin … [Click Below for Full Description]

BINDINGS - ANDREOLI/ROSPIGLIOSI BINDERY). FRANCESCO DI SALES
Venetia [Venice]: Bertani, 1667. This is a lovely example of the celebrated work produced in the heyday of the bindery operated by Gregorio and Giovanni Andreoli, dubbed the "Rospigliosi Bindery" by Hobson because it was the favored atelier of Cardinal Giulio Rospigliosi (1600-69), later Pope Clement IX. In addition to work done for Rospigliosi and other princes of the Church, the Andreolis bound books for merchant princes like the Medici and Borghese, and for real royalty, notably Queen Christina of Sweden, who called on them to bind books for the library she created at her Roman palazzo. Our volumes were bound for a couple from two prominent Florentine families: the Machiavelli, who gave us the great political philosopher Niccolò, and the Bacelli, a family of skilled stonemasons that achieved sufficient prosperity and social position to receive a coat of arms in the 16th century. Active from about 1630 until the early years of the 18th century, the bindery was at its zenith of production and design in the 1650s through the 1680s. Their symmetrically arranged, tasteful designs featured much ornate tooling and repetition of small stamps. Bindings done for a noble or ecclesiastical client would often have, as here, the patron's coat of arms at center. In 1665, Gregorio was given a lifetime appointment as binder to the Vatican Library. The text here contains the influential devotional works of the beloved Genevan bishop, saint, and doctor of the Church, Francis de Sales (1567-1622, canonized 1665), one of the most persuasive forces of the Counter-Reformation. Emphasizing the … [Click Below for Full Description]

"He who spends time regretting the past loses the present and risks the future." ― Francisco de Quevedo Francisco de Quevedo was one of the most well-known Spanish authors of the early 17th-century. He is most remembered for his satirical 'dream' poetry in which he writes himself into his story. 'Dreams' is a collection of five visions in which Quevedo witnesses the Day of Judgment and sees visions of hell, demons and devils, evil spirits being exorcised, and more experiences of the occult. The satire came in the form of Quevedo seeing various recognizable groups of people in hell including lawyers, astrologers, innkeepers, Protestants, accountants, Jews, physicians, and ...women. Francoforte, 1667. "Rare plate realized on the occasion of the1667 conclave.
