[MANUSCRIPT - STUYVESANT].
Cf. Kessler & Eugene Rachlis, Peter Stuyvesant and his New York. Original letter of safe-conduct, sealed and signed by the Duke of York, the later King James II, for the ship named Nieuw Jorck under captain Pieter Reyersz. van der Beets, giving permission to trade in the city of New York and surrounding areas during the year 1667. This was the first of three ships that were supposed to be granted permission to trade in New York for the company that had been formed by Pieter Stuyvesant, the former governor of New Amsterdam, who was returning to the city, now named New York.Outer margin somewhat frayed. This document, in good condition, complete with the seal, is of the utmost importance for the early history of New York and Anglo-Dutch relations in the third quarter of the 17th century.

SCHENK, Pieter.
The Anglo-Dutch Garden 74; Hollstein (Dutch & Flemish) XXV, p.295, 1667-1682; Springer, Bibl. Overzicht, pp. 43-44. A magnificent series of views of the house and gardens of "De Voorst'', the country estate of Arnold Joost van Keppel, Baron of Ashford, Margrave of Bury and Count of Albemarle, built by the architect Jacob Roman (1640-ca. 1716). Van Keppel (1669/70-1718), a favourite in the court of the Dutch Stadtholder Willem III, inherited the estate west of Zutphen in 1686. After the Stadtholder ascended to the English throne as William III in 1688, he bestowed numerous honours and titles on Van Keppel. Around 1700, largely at the King's expense, Van Keppel replaced the modest buildings and grounds with the lavish palace and gardens that came to be known as the Versailles of the Achterhoek. After the death of Van Keppel's widow the estate declined, parts were torn down in the nineteenth century, and the lavish interior was destroyed by fire in 1943. The estate still survives as restored in the 1950s and 1990s, but the present set of views gives a detailed view of the buildings, gardens and fountains when they were new. A very good series on good paper with generous margins, with only a few minor spots (one on the title-page and another in the clouds of one view), and light pencil marks on one view. Rare architectural and horticultural print series.

GUATTINI (GUALTINI), Michele Angelo and Dionigi de CARLI.
Borba de Moraes p. 153; Gay, Bibl. de l'Afrique et l'Arabe 3074; cf. Sabin 10909. The first French translation of a vividly written and very successful work that recounts the missionary voyage of 2 Italian Capuchin Fathers to Congo (1667-1669). It consists of letters written by Michele Angelo Guattini to his father during their voyage to Luanda (Angola), together with an account of their mission by his companion Dionigi de Carli. The Fathers sailed from Lisbon and called at Pernambuco, where they spent several months (which are described in full detail in Guattini's letters). When Guattini died shortly after their arrival at Luando, Carli continued the mission and graphically describes Congo's culture and natural history. Crossing the Atlantic between Africa and Brazil in a slave ship, he returned to Italy in 1669. Guattini's letters include noteworthy descriptions of Pernambuco "and the second known account of the city of Recife after the expulsion of the Dutch" (Borba de Moraes). Carli's description of his Atlantic crossing, moreover, provides rare details on the atrocities of the slave trade. The ship carried no fewer than 630 slaves, including children, transported "come il pesce ne'barili" (like fish in a barrel).Blank lower corner of title-page restored and some occasional spotting. Missionary voyage to Congo with an account of Pernambuco in good condition.

VERMAARSCH, Joost.
Bierens de Haan 5021; Cat. Rijksmuseum III, p. 22; STCN (5 copies); cf. Berlin Kat. 2225 (1667 issue of 1664 ed.); not in BAL. Richly illustrated second edition of an architectural manual compiled by a master mason, first published in 1664 (the first edition was also reissued in 1667). Although the title-page calls it the first volume, Vermaarsch never published a second. He openly borrows from architectural classics, naming Scamozzi, Palladio and Viniola on his title-page. He discusses mathematical projection, architectural decoration, the five orders of columns of classical architecture, and more specifically the theories of Scamozzi, Palladio and Vignola, each treated in a separately paginated chapter. As a practicing master mason in Leiden the author's views are of special interest when he discusses the design of decorative brick and plaster work for bases and capitals of columns for doors, gateways, windows, etc., freezes, ceilings and other works of masonry. He notes that all these designs can be constructed with only the very simplest measuring tools. The plates clearly illustrate his points and provide numerous models for brick and plaster decorations. Very good copy with generous margins, with printed memorial label on the pastedown, stating that the book was presented to the mathematical society "Mathesis Scientiarum Genetrix" after Isaac La Lau's 1849 death by his son J.G. La Lau. Both were leading members of the society.

All the representatives of these different arts are asking for Bosse's advice. This allows Bosse to express once again his ideas regarding perspective in painting and architecture. Abraham Bosse, who was born in Tours in 1602 is best known as an engraver but he was also the first professor of perspective at the newly founded Académie Royale from 1648 to 1661 when he was forced to leave due to disagreements with other Académicians. The two addresses that follow the book explain why in Bosse's own opinion, he had been forced to leave his lob at the Académie and they also respond to comments made about Bosse by Félibien in the preface to the first part of the latt … [Click Below for Full Description]

Helmont, F(ranciscus) M. B. v(an).

--- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.
