Sanson, Nicolas.
PARIS PIERRE MARIETTE BUT 1679 OR LATER 1667 - Folio (46 x 32 cm.), printed title with woodcut royal arms, 201 double-page engraved maps, 90 engraved descriptive tables (dated 1663-1679), contemporary manuscript index at end of volume calling for 110 maps, contemporary outline colour. Contemporary calf gilt, rubbed, neat repairs to extremities, an excellent example. One of the largest and most comprehensive Sanson atlases extant, and one of the rarest, bringing together over 200 maps, the contents reflecting the output of this very important publisher at the height of the firm's extent. Nicolas Sanson sr. (1600-1667) is considered the "Father of French Cartography". While not the first French mapmaker, he was the first French mapmaker/publisher to produce world and regional atlases in competition with the Dutch, then the pre-eminent map publishers in the world. Sanson was born in Abbeville, but relocated to Paris. He was by interest a historian, particularly of the classical world and, at an early age, started making maps to illustrate his researches. From here he broadened his interest and started producing contemporary maps. In recognition of his talents, in 1630 he was appointed Geographe Ordinaire du Roi. His career was held back by his lack of money, so he frequently worked in co-operation with other publishers, notably Pierre Mariette, who provided the capital and publishing experience, while Sanson created the maps. Their collaboration led to the Cartes Generales de toutes les parties du Monde, first published in 1658, although the constituent maps were prepared from … [Click Below for Full Description]

Durante, Castore.
Venetia: Gio. Giacomo Hertz Folio (32.2 cm, 12.7"). [12], 476, [28] pp.; illus.. 1667 Large, handsome Italian herbal, compiled by a poet, doctor, and botanist who served as chief physician to Pope Sixtus V. Originally published in 1585 and very popular well into the 17th century, in this edition the work opens with a title-page printed in red and black, bearing Hertz's large sailing ship printer's vignette, and ends with Ferro's appendix. The plants are organized on alphabetical principles and are => each introduced with a woodcut and a Latin verse describing their qualities and medicinal virtues. The woodcuts, some of which were done after Fuchs and Mattioli, are boldly rendered. Some depict isolated portions of the plant and some complete scenes of the plant in its natural habitat, such as the cut for Adianto (maidenhair fern), which shows the fern trailing down from a stony outcropping over a brook with ducks. The cut for Anonimo (sensitive plant) portrays a disembodied hand stroking a stem to produce the unmistakable inward leaf-folding; some of the other images also incorporate human figures — generally to show scale, but in the case of Arbor Malenconico (which supposedly sprang from the ashes of a lovelorn maiden),the "incorporation" is literal! Among the American plants and herbs are "Aloe Americana" (maguey) and sassafras, to name just two. Later half diced black morocco with pebbled black cloth–covered sides, spine with gilt-stamped title and gilt-stamped floral motifs in compartments; binding moderately rubbed and worn overall. Front fly-leaf with largely erased e … [Click Below for Full Description]

First Edition, second state of p. 85 without the repeated “of” on lines 6–7. A fine and completely unrestored copy of the first history of the Royal Society, published only five years after the Society received its Royal Charter. Sprat, a clergyman, was one of the original founders of the Royal Society; “[his] exposition of the conception and beginning of the Royal Society remains the only one which tells us, in any detail, not only what the founders were doing, but even more important, what they thought they were doing” (Purver, The Royal Society: Concept and Creation, p. 9). Sprat divided his work into 3 parts, the first of which discussed the state of natural philosophy of the “ancients” and compared that with the “moderns.” The second part gave examples of the kind of scientific w … [Click Below for Full Description]

BORELLI, Giovanni Alfonso.
"A fine copy of one of the most important early treatises on fluid mechanics. In this work Borelli "argues against positive levity, discusses the Torricellian experiment, takes up siphons, pumps, and the nature of fluidity, tries to understand the expansion of water while freezing, and deals with fermentation and other chemical processes" (DSB). "This work is important as the first treatise on capillarity, and for containing important investigations on the action of capillary tubes, in which the author, inter alia, formulates the law that the height of the ascent of liquids in capillary tubes is inversely proportional to their diameters. His investigations also led him to the conclusion that the phenomenon of capillarity is independent of the pressure of air" (Zeitlinger in Sotheran, First supplement, 3060). "[De motionibus naturalibus] was well known among Borelli's contemporaries and is quoted by Varignon in his Projet d'une nouvelle mechanique. It is reviewed in the first volume of Philosophical Transactions Abridged, where it is praised for its thoroughness, for the discussion of Torricelli's experiments and for Borelli's stand against Descartes on the nature of fluidity" (Roberts & Trent). Borelli regarded this work, together with his De vi percussionis (1667), as necessary preparation for his masterpiece, De motum animalium (1680-81), on which he had worked since the early 1660s. The work appeared in three subsequent editions, testifying to its influence.

Provenance: The Earls of Macclesfield (bookplate … [Click Below for Full Description]

[S.n.], [S.l.], 1667. First edition. In contemporary vellum. Short title and date in ink on front panel. (8º); (2), 90, (2) p. The book concerned with the War of Devolution (1667-1668) the conflict between France and Spain over the possession of the Spanish Netherlands. After the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) and the Franco-Spanish War (1635-1659), the Spanish monarchy was in a spiral of instability, weakness, and diminishing resources, while France under Louis XIV became the dominant military and political force in Europe. Philip IV of Spain died in 1665, and France claimed that Louis XIV, in the name of his wife, Marie Therese, the daughter of King Philip IV, would inherit Spanish territories in Flanders, but Spain denied this claim. France declared war, and the inability of Spain to defend herself and the prospect that the Spanish Netherlands would be entirely absorbed by Louis's armies, caused the governments of England, the Dutch Republic and Sweden to act, and form the Triple Alliance in January 1668 to force France back to her earlier frontiers. Shortly after this France agreed to the peace settlement of Aix-la-Chapelle (Treaty of Aachen) on May 2, 1668, which stated that France gained territory in Flanders, while most of the Spanish Netherlands, as well as French-Comté, were returned to Spain. Scarce, we could trace only five copies worldwide. Collection signatures on inner front panel. Collection stamp of the Polish aristocrat and partiot Roman Sanguszko (1800-1881) on title page.
