Kircher, Athanasius (1602-1680)
Apud Joannem Janssonium à Waesberge & Elizeum Weyerstraet,, Amsterdam, 1667. Folio: *4, **4; A-Z4; Aa-Hh4. (*1 is the engraved title page) Kircher?s China. A Very Fine Copy of the True First Edition "In 1667 the learned German Jesuit, Athanasius Kircher, published his ?China Illustrata? at Amsterdam. Gathering his materials from the works of other members of the Society, Kircher wrote one of the century?s most influential treatises on China. His primary purpose was to establish the authenticity of the Nestorian monument discovered in Sian, and to that end he produced in print the original Chinese and Syriac inscriptions on the monument, the Chinese text in Romanization, and finally a Latin translation and his explication of the Chinese and Syriac texts. In addition, Kircher included a sizeable description of China and other places in Asia. For example, in a section devoted to the various routes to China and the history of Christianity in China, he sketched all the old overland routes, including that of Johann Grueber and Albert d?Orville from Agra to Peking, as well as giving a description of Tibet. He traced the activities of Christians in China from the tradition of St. Thomas to Boym?s reports about the conversions at the Ming pretender?s court and Adam Schall?s experiences at the Ch?ing court during the K?ang-his era. Following what he thought to be the spread of idolatry from the Near East to Persia, India, and finally to East Asia, Kircher described the religions of China, Japan, and India. His extensive discussion of Hinduism and the Mogul Empire derived from the let … [Click Below for Full Description]

Kircher, Athanasius:
Amsterdam, Jacob van Meurs, 1667 - 7 Bll., 237 SS., 5 Bll. mit ca. 55 Textkupfern. 1 Titel, 1 Porträt (, 2 doppelblattgr. Karten und 23 (1 mehrfach gefalt.) Tafeln (alles in Kupferstich). BORELLI, Giovanni Alfonso.
Bologna: Giacopo Monti, 1667. First edition. Hardcover. First edition, an extraordinary association copy, of the first published book on the laws of percussion, and containing important hitherto unpublished material from the lectures of Galileo and Torricelli. This copy was a gift from Prince Leopold of Tuscany, Borelli's patron at the Tuscan court. Probably under the influence of Borelli (see below), Leopold, together with his brother Grand Duke Ferdinand, founded the Accademia del Cimento where Borelli first presented much of the experimental work on which this text is based. Although Leopold held Borelli in high esteem, Borelli's decision to publish this work in Bologna rather than as part of the proceedings of the Accademia led to a quarrel between the two men. “In this, Borelli's first book on mechanics, he quotes Galileo's youthful work on percussion, the fourth Dialogo, and lectures by Torricelli. As well as the detailed discussion of impact, the book deals with the dynamics of falling bodies, vibration, gravity, fluid mechanics, magnetism, and pendular motion … he gives the name resilience for the first time to a number of problems now classed under this name” (Roberts & Trent). This is “the earliest book on the laws of percussion, which undoubtedly influenced John Wallis who, in 1668, published his discovery of the laws governing the percussion of non-elastic bodies, and Christiaan Huygens, who deals with the percussion of elastic bodies in his treatise De motu corporum ex percussion, published in 1669' (Zeitlinger I, 174). Sthlm, G. Hantsch, 1667. 4:o. Grav. front,(12),120,(16) s.

ROBINSON, William Davis.
Saalmink, p. 1667; Sabin 72205. Very rare first and only Dutch edition of William Davis Robinson's Memoirs of the Mexican revolution (1820), describing the struggle for an independent Mexico, together with an account of Xavier Mina's expedition, and a historical introduction by the translator. General Xavier Mina (1789-1817) played an important role in the Mexican War of Independence. Born in Spain and an ardent supporter of liberal ideas, he was forced to leave the country and subsequently travelled to France and England. Destined to help the Mexicans cast off the yoke of Spanish rule, he embarked for the United States in 1815 where he readied several ships and headed for Mexico, arriving at Soto la Marina in 1817. Mina fought with great valour and made some successful attacks, but eventually he was defeated, taken prisoner and subsequently executed. After 11 years of war, Mexico gained its independence in 1821. Owner's entry on front pastedown. Good copy, with some light waters tains. Spine worn.
