CAVENDISH, MARGARET, DUCHESS OF NEWCASTLE.
London: Printed by A. Maxwell, 1667. First edition. Folio, contemporary blind-ruled sheep, rebacked with later endpapers, gilt rules and lettering. The famous biography of William Cavendish (1616-1684), the Earl of Newcastle, by his famous literary wife, Margaret Lucas Cavendish (1623-1673), the first English woman to publish extensively. Cavendish's biography was widely read and admired when first published, and its details and descriptions of the English Civil War and the Cavendishs' life in exile in Europe have held up to historical scrutiny. Literary opinion of Cavendish's Life have always been high, with praise coming from Charles Lamb, Coleridge and Virginia Woolf, among others. Deletions in ink on two pages, but text legible; a neat manuscript correction to the name "Banaum" on page 60, which is also present in other copies and has been attributed to the author herself. Cavendish's biography is occasionally accompanied by a portrait, but the portrait was engraved after this book was published and is not called for. Binding a little rubbed; hinges starting, but sound; a few minor stains and tiny flaws; a very good, large copy.

Pieter Schenk d. J. (1698-1775) ca 1740. Copper engraving coloured in outline, sheet: 61 x 53 cm, Darstellung: 50 x 28,5 cm.
- Two maps on one sheet show the Republic of Ragusa on the Dalmatian coast around Dubrovnik, embracing the area from Kotor to the island Korcula, Hvar and Island Cres and Losinj, with a part of the Istrian coast below. The text next to Dubrovnik describes the city being destroyed in the earthquake of 1667, but being rebuilt later. The upper image is partly based on the map by Vincenzo Coronelli from ca 1695 showing the Republic of Dubrovnik (Ragusa) that existed from 1358 to 1808. After the Treaty of Karlowitz of 1699, when Ottomans no longer presented a danger to the Habsburg countries, Dubrovnik was taken over by Venice. With that peace agreement Dubrovnik had to leave two patches of land to the Ottomas allowing them exit to the sea. In the south the border went by the village Sutorina in the north-west coast of the Gulf of Kotor, today belonging to Montenegro. In the north part of the coast Ottomans kept the city Neum, today still the only exit of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the sea, dividing the Croatian coast. This Schenk’s map shows the newly established borders of the Republic of Dubrovnik. The uncommon lower map showing the island Cres is dedicated to Giovanni Antonio Petris, a lecturer of philosophy at the Bologna Universiti. Petris da Cherso (or Petric in Croatian) came from an old noble family of Cres. Because of the text in Italian language we can assume the lower map was based on an older Italian draft. In a good condition with original colouring. Soft fold in the middle.

[Guy JOLY]
[Guy JOLY]: Observationes / sive / Responsio / Ad Duos Tractatus Bruxellis editos / Adversos / Reginae Christianissimae / Jus in Brabantiam, & in alias quasdam Belgii provincias. With forged copper engraved device of Imprimerie Royale on title page. Paris: s. impr. 1667. 16°. [Not num. p. 1-6 (title, preface)], p. 1-336, [2 not num. p. (notes, errata)]. Later vellum binding on two bands, with textile hasps with hand-written spine title, as well as colour cut Anonymously published legal treatise, in which the author, French historian and advisor to the court Guy Joly (died 1678), due to the marriage of Louis XIV with Maria Theresa of Spain claims the Spanish Netherlands for France, who's armies had occupied the territory in May 1667, hence starting the War of Devolution (1667-1668). Jolys text is a reply to two works published in the same year by Belgian expert Pierre Stockmans, in which this region, mainly modern-day Belgium and Luxembourg, is said to belong to the Spanish Habsburg Empire. The engraved printer's device on the title page is a consciously midleading indication, the book was probably printed in the Netherlands (see remark to the copy of the BnF). Title page with owner's remarks, front cover and text block with continuous little worm hole, hasps mainly missing, otherwise very well preserved copy indeed of this rarely offered item. ABPC online shows no auction records for this title since 1972.

Kircher, Athanasius (1602-1680)
Apud Joannem Janssonium à Waesberge & Elizeum Weyerstraet,, Amsterdam, 1667. Folio: *4, **4; A-Z4; Aa-Hh4. (*1 is the engraved title page) Kircher?s China. A Very Fine Copy of the True First Edition "In 1667 the learned German Jesuit, Athanasius Kircher, published his ?China Illustrata? at Amsterdam. Gathering his materials from the works of other members of the Society, Kircher wrote one of the century?s most influential treatises on China. His primary purpose was to establish the authenticity of the Nestorian monument discovered in Sian, and to that end he produced in print the original Chinese and Syriac inscriptions on the monument, the Chinese text in Romanization, and finally a Latin translation and his explication of the Chinese and Syriac texts. In addition, Kircher included a sizeable description of China and other places in Asia. For example, in a section devoted to the various routes to China and the history of Christianity in China, he sketched all the old overland routes, including that of Johann Grueber and Albert d?Orville from Agra to Peking, as well as giving a description of Tibet. He traced the activities of Christians in China from the tradition of St. Thomas to Boym?s reports about the conversions at the Ming pretender?s court and Adam Schall?s experiences at the Ch?ing court during the K?ang-his era. Following what he thought to be the spread of idolatry from the Near East to Persia, India, and finally to East Asia, Kircher described the religions of China, Japan, and India. His extensive discussion of Hinduism and the Mogul Empire derived from the let … [Click Below for Full Description]

Kircher, Athanasius:
Amsterdam, Jacob van Meurs, 1667 - 7 Bll., 237 SS., 5 Bll. mit ca. 55 Textkupfern. 1 Titel, 1 Porträt (, 2 doppelblattgr. Karten und 23 (1 mehrfach gefalt.) Tafeln (alles in Kupferstich). BORELLI, Giovanni Alfonso.
Bologna: Giacopo Monti, 1667. First edition. Hardcover. First edition, an extraordinary association copy, of the first published book on the laws of percussion, and containing important hitherto unpublished material from the lectures of Galileo and Torricelli. This copy was a gift from Prince Leopold of Tuscany, Borelli's patron at the Tuscan court. Probably under the influence of Borelli (see below), Leopold, together with his brother Grand Duke Ferdinand, founded the Accademia del Cimento where Borelli first presented much of the experimental work on which this text is based. Although Leopold held Borelli in high esteem, Borelli's decision to publish this work in Bologna rather than as part of the proceedings of the Accademia led to a quarrel between the two men. “In this, Borelli's first book on mechanics, he quotes Galileo's youthful work on percussion, the fourth Dialogo, and lectures by Torricelli. As well as the detailed discussion of impact, the book deals with the dynamics of falling bodies, vibration, gravity, fluid mechanics, magnetism, and pendular motion … he gives the name resilience for the first time to a number of problems now classed under this name” (Roberts & Trent). This is “the earliest book on the laws of percussion, which undoubtedly influenced John Wallis who, in 1668, published his discovery of the laws governing the percussion of non-elastic bodies, and Christiaan Huygens, who deals with the percussion of elastic bodies in his treatise De motu corporum ex percussion, published in 1669' (Zeitlinger I, 174).
