HISTOIRE GENERALE DES ANTILLES HABITEES PAR LES FRANCOIS.

Paris: Chez Thomas Jolly, -1671. 1667 - Four volumes bound in three. [20],593,[3]; [16],539; [16],317,[8]; [6],362,[13]pp. plus eighteen plates (many folding) and five folding maps. Extra engraved titlepage in first and second volumes. Plate of arms in first, third, and fourth volumes. Contemporary calf, leather labels, spines gilt extra. Minor rubbing, some light edge wear. Final text leaf in first volume torn but no loss. Overall a fine, particularly fresh set in the original bindings. The best edition, after the original abridged edition of 1654. This extensive work is full of detailed descriptions of life in the French Antilles, including natural history, slaves, plantation activities, and the like. The fine engraved plates depict sugar plantation work, slaves manufacturing indigo, animals, spiders, land and naval battles between the French and British in the Caribbean, etc. The maps are of St. Christopher, Guadeloupe, St. Croix, Marigalande, and Martinique. "This voluminous account of the French settlements in the West Indies contains numerous passages which indicate the importance of tobacco in the political economy of the islands" - Arents. According to Rich, Dutertre was forced to publish the original 1654 edition before the work was complete: "The first edition of Father Du Tertre's HISTORY OF THE ANTILLES, or rather the project of that work, which the Rev. Father was obliged to put to press in haste, because he understood that some other person was about printing it under some other name, thereby depriving him of the credit of it." SABIN 21458.

Verona (d. i. Berlin), Francisco Giulio, 1667. - Titel, (22), 234 SS., letzte 3 w. Bll. A.). "Critical but faithful picture of the state of helplessness of the German empire, and of the misgovernment prevalent in most German states since the Thirty Years’ War" (Palgrave III, 241). Anstreichungen. Altes Griffregister vor I. Insgesamt gutes, sauberes Exemplar. I: Weller I, 272. Vgl. Pütter I, 234. Stinzing/L. III/1, 19. Roscher, Gesch. der Nationalök. 318. Faber du Faur II, 1530a: "sensational book on the constitution of the Holy Roman Empire [.] the first work to condemn the ancient constitution from beginning to end". - II: Vgl. Reusch II, 174.         Epistolarum medicinalium centuria IV .... -BOUND WITH- De insolitis partu humani ... accedunt ... Veslingi equitis de pullitie

Hafniae, 1667-'64. First Edition. Full contemp. stiff vellum. A very good copy somewhat age browned. 8vo., There are text illus.. Two works of Bartholin bound as one. [1] This is volume 4 of Bartholin's collected medical correspondence (each collection is issued separately). The subject matter covered in the text is staggering in the range of topics (there is a subject index listing the correspondent). This volume contains Bartholin's exchange with Steno on the structure of the muscles of the heart (accompanied by a text illus.). The Krivatsy entry listing all four volumes as one work appears to be an error since they were issued separately as noted in Parkinson and Wellcome. [2] Bartholin's observations on parturition. Appended is a selection of Vesling's correspondence on obstetrics. The Vesling has its own title page but is integral with the Bartholin tract. This Vesling addenda is often missing. Both the Osler and Waller copies are lacking this portion of the text. Krivatsky # 830 & # 805; Parkinson # 193; Wellcome II, 108.

Delineatio domus recreatricis adjacentiumq(ue) prospectuum amoenissimorum extra urbem Zutphaniensem, auspicys & jussu . . . Arnoldi Justi. Amsterdam, Pieter Schenk, [ca. 1720]. Oblong 4to (23×28 cm). With engraved title and 16 unnumbered engraved views (15×19 cm). Modern half parchment.

The Anglo-Dutch Garden 74; Hollstein (Dutch & Flemish) XXV, p.295, 1667-1682; Springer, Bibl. Overzicht, pp. 43-44. A magnificent series of views of the house and gardens of "De Voorst'', the country estate of Arnold Joost van Keppel, Baron of Ashford, Margrave of Bury and Count of Albemarle, built by the architect Jacob Roman (1640-ca. 1716). Van Keppel (1669/70-1718), a favourite in the court of the Dutch Stadtholder Willem III, inherited the estate west of Zutphen in 1686. After the Stadtholder ascended to the English throne as William III in 1688, he bestowed numerous honours and titles on Van Keppel. Around 1700, largely at the King's expense, Van Keppel replaced the modest buildings and grounds with the lavish palace and gardens that came to be known as the Versailles of the Achterhoek. After the death of Van Keppel's widow the estate declined, parts were torn down in the nineteenth century, and the lavish interior was destroyed by fire in 1943. The estate still survives as restored in the 1950s and 1990s, but the present set of views gives a detailed view of the buildings, gardens and fountains when they were new. A very good series on good paper with generous margins, with only a few minor spots (one on the title-page and another in the clouds of one view), and light pencil marks on one view. Rare architectural and horticultural print series.

& 1667. Par les RR. PP. Michel Ange de Gattine, & Denys de Carli de Plaisance, capucins & missionaires apostolique audit royaume de Congo.Lyon, Thomas Amaulry, 1680. 12mo. Contemporary calf, gold-tooled spine. Re-backed.

Borba de Moraes p. 153; Gay, Bibl. de l'Afrique et l'Arabe 3074; cf. Sabin 10909. The first French translation of a vividly written and very successful work that recounts the missionary voyage of 2 Italian Capuchin Fathers to Congo (1667-1669). It consists of letters written by Michele Angelo Guattini to his father during their voyage to Luanda (Angola), together with an account of their mission by his companion Dionigi de Carli. The Fathers sailed from Lisbon and called at Pernambuco, where they spent several months (which are described in full detail in Guattini's letters). When Guattini died shortly after their arrival at Luando, Carli continued the mission and graphically describes Congo's culture and natural history. Crossing the Atlantic between Africa and Brazil in a slave ship, he returned to Italy in 1669. Guattini's letters include noteworthy descriptions of Pernambuco "and the second known account of the city of Recife after the expulsion of the Dutch" (Borba de Moraes). Carli's description of his Atlantic crossing, moreover, provides rare details on the atrocities of the slave trade. The ship carried no fewer than 630 slaves, including children, transported "come il pesce ne'barili" (like fish in a barrel).Blank lower corner of title-page restored and some occasional spotting. Missionary voyage to Congo with an account of Pernambuco in good condition.

Amsterdam, Hendrick Doncker, 1678. 4to. With an engraved architectural frontispiece by G. Wingendorp, engraved vignette with carpenters' and masons' tools on title-page, and hundreds of diagrams, measured drawings of columns, architectural ornament and other architectural elements, orthographic projections, etc., on 46 engraved plates (including 5 folding). 19th-century half cloth, paste-paper sides.

Bierens de Haan 5021; Cat. Rijksmuseum III, p. 22; STCN (5 copies); cf. Berlin Kat. 2225 (1667 issue of 1664 ed.); not in BAL. Richly illustrated second edition of an architectural manual compiled by a master mason, first published in 1664 (the first edition was also reissued in 1667). Although the title-page calls it the first volume, Vermaarsch never published a second. He openly borrows from architectural classics, naming Scamozzi, Palladio and Viniola on his title-page. He discusses mathematical projection, architectural decoration, the five orders of columns of classical architecture, and more specifically the theories of Scamozzi, Palladio and Vignola, each treated in a separately paginated chapter. As a practicing master mason in Leiden the author's views are of special interest when he discusses the design of decorative brick and plaster work for bases and capitals of columns for doors, gateways, windows, etc., freezes, ceilings and other works of masonry. He notes that all these designs can be constructed with only the very simplest measuring tools. The plates clearly illustrate his points and provide numerous models for brick and plaster decorations. Very good copy with generous margins, with printed memorial label on the pastedown, stating that the book was presented to the mathematical society "Mathesis Scientiarum Genetrix" after Isaac La Lau's 1849 death by his son J.G. La Lau. Both were leading members of the society.

(colophons: Antwerp, Jacob Peeters, [1686/87?]). 2 letterpress parts plus 3 print series, the last in 5 parts, the whole in 1 volume. Small oblong folio (18×29.5 cm). Collection of 128 engraved prints published by Jacob Peeters. Late 17th- or early 18th-century sprinkled calf, gold-tooled spine and board edges. In modern half calf clamshell box.

Atabey 933 (Dutch edition, 63 plates); Landwehr, De Hooghe Book Illustrator 82 (French ed., number of plates not specified); Weber 816 (Dutch edition, 125 plates); cf. Atabey 934; Blackmer 1276-1277; Nagler XI, pp. 165-166. Interesting collection of engraved prints centred around the Great Turkish War (1667-1683), a series of conflicts between the Ottoman Empire and Europe, with the letterpress text in French, but many of the captions to the prints in Dutch. The collection can be divided into 3 general parts: the first with equestrian portraits of the relevant monarchs and other leading figures on both sides of the war, the second with engraved scenes of the 1683 Battle of Vienna after Romeyn de Hooghe, and the third with over a hundred views of the cities involved. This last part contains 6 separate series, with views of Austria and Upper Hungary, Lower Hungary, Crete and the Maltese Archipelago, the Dardanelles and the Aegean archipelago, the Strait of Gibraltar and North Africa, and the Holy Land and Arabian Peninsula. Every copy varies in its make-up and the number of plates in the series of city views. The collection was published by Jacob (Jacques) Peeters (1637-1695), and most of the engravings are made after drawings by his brother Jan (Johannes) Peeters (1625-1677), best known for his drawings of city views engraved by Merian. Johannes Peeters was a pupil of their eldest brother Bonaventura Peeters, a well-known painter and draughtsman, and specialized in maritime scenes as can be seen in the present views, often depicting harbours with several ships. The plates with Dutch captions generally have a translation into French added in manuscript in the foot margin by a contemporary hand, sometimes with additional information. In very good condition, with a small tear in 1 leaf and a few minor spots. Binding scuffed at the edges, spine and front hinge restored.

, 1667. 1667. Paris, Abraham Bosse 1667. Engraved frontispiece, (8),72,(20)pp. With an engraved dedication page. 8vo. Contemporary full mottled calf, spine and corners expertly restored. Some browning. Bound in at the end (the last 20 pages) are: 1 - A. Bosse au lecteur, sur les causes qu'il croit avoir euës, de discontinuer le cours de ses leçons geometrales et perspectives, dedans l'Academie Royale de la Peinture et de la Sculpture, & mesme de s'en retirer. Paris, A. Bosse, 1667. (15)pp. Paris, A. Bosse, 1667. (4)pp. This, scarce, book is writen in the form of a dialogue between Ariste, an amateur who would like to build, an architect, a painter, a "disciple" and the author himself. All the representatives of these different arts are asking for Bosse's advice. This allows Bosse to express once again his ideas regarding perspective in painting and architecture. Abraham Bosse, who was born in Tours in 1602 is best known as an engraver but he was also the first professor of perspective at the newly founded Académie Royale from 1648 to 1661 when he was forced to leave due to disagreements with other Académicians. The two addresses that follow the book explain why in Bosse's own opinion, he had been forced to leave his lob at the Académie and they also respond to comments made about Bosse by Félibien in the preface to the first part of the latter's Entretiens, published a year earlier.         Les Soliloques de Gerlac, Chanoine Regulier De l'Ordre de S. Augustin, Dit un Autre Thomas a Kempis [The Soliloquies of Gerlac, Canon Regular of the Order of St. Augustine, Said to be Another Thomas a Kempis]

Chez Charles Savreux 1667 - B00L4N42LU In French. 1667 first edition thus Chez Charles Savreux (Paris), 3 1/8 x 5 1/8 inches tall hardbound, marbled paper-covered boards over leather spine, elaborate gilt tooling and gilt-lettered black leather label to spine, marbled endpapers, sewn-in silk bookmark, [14], 87, [1], 338, [6] pp., complete (including blank front and rear endpapers). Covers only slightly rubbed and edgeworn, particularly at top of spine, but the binding is quite solid. Formerly in the collection of St. Augustine's Abbey, Ramsgate, East Kent, England (a Benedictine monastery whose remaining community moved in 2010 to an allied house in Surrey), with its white identifying marks to the lower spine, bookplate to front pastedown and red-and-black stamp to title page. The title page is lightly soiled, with a prior inscription partly erased. An occasional very slight instance of foxing, but overall a very good copy indeed - clean, bright and unmarked - of an exceptionally rare first French translation of 'The Soliloquies of Gerlac Peterson,' together with 'The Life of Gerlac' (probably translated from the Latin Chronicles of Windesheim) and a 12-page foreword. Neither OCLC nor Copac list any copies worldwide. Only the BnF catalog (Bibliotheque Nationale de France) locates locates a copy, at the BnF Tolbiac Rez-de-Jardin Rare Book Room in Paris. This work, 'Soliloquium cum Deo Ignitum,' was first printed in Latin in Cologne in 1616, in Flemish in 1623, in Italian in 1674 and in Spanish in 1686. This is the first French translation. ~KM2~ Gerlac Peterson (also sometimes spelled Petersz, Peterssen or Petersen; in Latin, Gerlacus Petri; 1377 or 1378-1411) was a Dutch mystic who was for most of his life a member of the Brethren of Common Life, where he devoted his time (with his brothers) to calligraphy, transcription of manuscripts, education and prayer. As a member of this order, he was associated with many illustrious contemplatives, including John of Ruysbroeck, Florence Radewyns, Henry of Kalkar, Gerard of Zutphen, John a Kempis and, perhaps most significantly from a modern view, with John's brother, Thomas a Kempis, now best known as the author of the devotional classic 'The Imitation of Christ.' Gerlac has been called 'another Kempis,' and indeed this is part of the title of this translation of Gerlac's 'Soliloquies.' A number of critics have ascribed to Kempis words or theories which belong to Gerlac. Gerlac left his brethren to come back to his cell, where, as he said, 'somebody was waiting for him.' It has been maintained that the 'Imitation' reproduced several ideas and the general spirit of Gerlac's ascetic works. In fact, Thomas a Kempis inserted into a copy of the 'Imitation' which he wrote in his own hand in 1441, a passage from Gerlac's 'Soliloquies' in which Gerlac says he would feel no pain, if necessary for the greater glory of God, to be in hell forever. This passage is an interpolation, which was deleted from subsequent copies of the 'Imitation' (produced at a time just prior to the invention of modern printing). It has been said that the difference between the ascetic theories of Gerlac and those of the author of the 'Imitation' are numerous and deep enough to make any similarities apparent.
