AMBROSINI, GIACINTO & LORENZO TINTI
Bononiae [Bologna]: Sumptibus haeredum Euangelistae de Duccijs, 1666. First Edition. Vellum. Very good +. Folio (31.4 x 21cm). Contemporary vellum. Collation: [16], 576, [70] p.+ engraved frontispiece and 36 woodblock prints in text or singly. The frontispiece has allegorical figures in a garden, with arms of the University of Bologna. Bottom of spine repaired with new vellum. The internal condition is very good. This is a very scarce title from an Italian botanist and brother of naturalist Batolomeo Ambrosini. He succeeded his brother to the chair of botany at the University of Bolognia and also assumed direction of the botanical garden. His first work was Hortus Bononia studiosirum consistus which was followed posthumously with the Phytologiae offered here. The Phytologiae was intended to be the first of a two-volume dictionary of plants with the second to be on trees. The second volume was never completed. The woodcuts in this work on herbaceous plants were done by Tinti and provide a good working illustration for the plant described in the text. This very scarce work comes from a period of great botanical study and characterization in Italy. The genus Ambrosinia is named after the two brothers. (Hunt 303; Pritzel 132). per Il Falco,, In Roma. "Cm. 23, pp. (20) 546 (2) d'errata, 32, 12. Fregio xilografico al frontespizio, testate, capolettera istoriati, numerose figure nel testo e 16 tavole incise in rame di cui molte ripiegate. Solida legatura del tempo in piena pergamena rigida con nervi passanti, unghie e titoli ms. al dorso. Carte a tratti un po' brunite, ma esemplare genuino e ben conservato. Ex libris alle sguardie. Si tratta della prima edizione (seconda tiratura, con la data 1666), rara, di questa classica opera per la quale il severo Cicognara (3800) così s'esprime: ".prezioso libro, il migliore che abbiamo sulle Romane Antichità, depurato dalle contumelie, e inesattezze di una folla di scrittori che specularono su questo argomento.". La prima appendice finale titola: "Discorso d'Ottavio Falconieri intorno alla Piramide di C. Cestio et alle Pitture, che sono in essa con alcune annotazioni sopra un'iscrizione antica appartenente alla medesima. Lettera del medesimo al Signor Carlo Dati sopra l'iscrizione di un mattone.". La seconda appendice contiene inoltre: "Lettera d'Ottavio Falconieri al sig. Carlo Dati sopra l'iscrizione d'un mattone .". Cfr. anche Olschki (Choix, 17645): "Ouvrage qui eut un grand succes à son epoque. Nardini etudie la Rome ancienne dans ses subdivision regionales et, contrairement à ce qui s'etait fait jusqu'alors, etend avec méthode ses investigations erudites aux minimes vestiges de l'antiquité". AUBERY, Antoine;
[Click Below for Full Description]

Founded by Prince Leopoldo de’ Medici and the Grand-duke Ferdinando II in 1657, the Academy resolved to test a series of principles of natural philosophy which up until then had been commonly accepted solely on the authority of Aristotle. The Academy proposed to follow Galileo’s example, and use only rigorous experimentation as their guide. This lavishly illustrated volume was introduced and edited by the Secretary of the Academy, Lorenzo Magalotti. NIEUHOF(F), Johann.
Engraved title, frontispiece portrait, folding map of China (small tears along fold), 34 double-page plates, 110 half-page text engravings of landscapes, seaports, towns and cities, engraved head-piece and initial, woodcut ornamental head- and tail-pieces. (4), 444, (10) pp. index (some wormholes at the end). Folio. 17th century vellum. Amsterdam, Jacob Mörs, 1666. First German edition, Narrated here is an account of the embassy of Pierre van Goyer and Jacob van Keyser, who left Batavia on 14 July 1655 and returned on 31 March 1657. Nieuhoff (1618-1672) was of German birth, but devoted much of his life to the service of the Dutch East India Company, spending nine years in Brazil. He then went out to China, was governor of Ceylon, returned to Holland and then departed again for the Far East. He died in Madagascar. The present book is extraordinarily rich in its depictions of landscapes, seaports, towns and cities, as well as plants and animals and costumes. Despite the negligible defects cited above, this is a handsome, well-margined copy with all the engravings in bright condition and sharp, fresh impression. - Cordier 2346; Cox I, p. 325; not in Lipperheide but cf. TACHENIUS OTTO
Venezia (1666) - Combi, & La Noù. 1 ff bb, 36 pp nn, 239 pp, 1 pp nn, 1 ff bb Legatura ottocentesca in mezza pelle con titolo su tassello in pelle rossa applicato al dorso; piatti rivestiti di carta marmorizzata. Tagli rossi. Leonardus Turneiser clavum ferreum me praesente, ac vidente igne calefacto, ac oleo immisso in aurum convertit. Romae die 20 novemb. post prandium". Il Tachenius viene anche ricordato per il suo "Sale viperino", un rimedio medicinale grazie al quale riscosse parecchia fortuna ma che gli costò anche l'accusa di plagio da parte del medico Johann Zwelfer. Full-page engraved architectural frontispiece of sacred muses holding holy attributes and 176 plates with 350 devices engravings by Aegidus Sadeler of Prague (1568-1629), laid out in ovals and medallions. 19th-century morocco with gilt monogram cipher of interlocking C’s as cornerpieces and to spine, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt; (rubbing to extremities, especially the head of the spine otherwise a good copy with rich impressions). Early monogram bookplate and another later of Bibliotheque I.G. Schorsch on front pastedown. A monogram and motto, "Nunc nox mox lux" are stamped in green on the flyleaf. Another stamp to lower margin of title with French surname "Bourcier." Later Arnheim edition of Jacobus Typotius’s influential collection of emblems detailing parts of sacred ritual in the Latin West church. Typotius’s Symbola Divina et Humana was first published in Prague in three volumes from 1601 to 1603. An extant manuscript of the Symbola Divina et Humana dates to about 1590 and it is known that several copies were made and circulated through the court of Prague. Typotius, a Flemish humanist scholar, was court historian to Emperor Rudolf II. While his name takes precedence on the title page, Typotius was possibly just one of four men responsible for this work. The designs were compiled by Ottavio Strada, antiquarian to Emperor Rudolf III, and were reproduced by the engraver Aegidius Sadele … [Click Below for Full Description]

In 1623 Janssonius owned a bookstore in Frankfurt am Main, later also in Danzig, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, Königsberg, Geneva and Lyon. In the 1630s he formed a partnership with his brother in law Henricus Hondius, and together they published atlases as Mercator/Hondius/Janssonius.Under the leadership of Janssonius the Hondius Atlas was steadily enlarged. Renamed Atlas Novus, it had three volumes in 1638, one fully dedicated to Italy. 1646 a fourth volume came out with "English County Maps", a year after a similar issue by Willem Blaeu. Janssonius' maps are similar to those of Blaeu, and he is often accused of copying from his rival, but many of his maps predate those of Blaeu and/or covered different regions. By 1660, at which point the atlas bore the appropriate name "Atlas Major", there were 11 volumes, containing the work of about a hundred credited authors and engravers. It included a description of "most of the cities of the world" (Townatlas), of the waterworld (Atlas Maritimus in 33 maps), and of the Ancient World (60 … [Click Below for Full Description]
