LUCANUS, Marcus Annæus
1666 PHARSALIA Lucan Julius Caesar Civil War Pompey Military Rome Supernatural “Wars worse than civil on Emathian plains, and crime let loose we sing; how Rome's high race plunged in her vitals her victorious sword;” Lucan, Pharsalia ‘Pharsalia’ or ‘On the Civil War’ is an ancient Roman poem detailing the civil war between Julius Caesar and the Senate. Lucan discusses the cultural despair experienced in Rome and also exposes many of the flaws that Julius Caesar possessed in his political and military leadership. In addition to historical importance, ‘Pharsalia’ includes elements of the supernatural, dream interpretation, ghosts, and prophetic visions. This mid-17th-century edition was edited and printed by Jean Ribou who used the Brebeuf French translation for this edition. The Brebeuf translation was typically given to more popular printers such as Elzevier, Sommaville, and Loyson; however, Ribou was given the opportunity to print this edition, which is distinguished by its double-page engraved frontispieces and other full-page copper engravings depicting snakes, battle scenes, navigation scenes, and a sighting of the Lighthouse of Alexandria! A very desirable example of ‘Pharsalia!’ Item number: #1907 Price: $499 LUCANUS, Marcus Annæus La Pharsale de Lucain, ou Les guerres civiles de Cesar et de Pompee, en vers francois, par Mr de Brebeuf. FURETIERE;
[Attributes: First Edition]

Paris, Denys Bechet, 1666. Rare 1st edition of this travel account by J. de Bourges (1630-1714), the vicar Apostolic of Western Tonking (Vietnam). Descriptions of the route to Bassora, Isfahan, Surate, Masulipatan, Siam (with details on the customs of the inhabitants of Siam, their religion, fruit) and China.
