Athanasii Kircheri (Athanasius Kircher)
Typographia Varessi, Rome. The uncommon 1666 original printing of Athanasius Kircher's seminal text (written and printed in Latin) on the obelisks of Ancient Egypt --and his interpretation of their hieroglyphics. Kircher (1602-1680) was a remarkably learned figure, a polymath who was viewed by many as the father of Egyptology. A Jesuit priest and scholar, Kircher engaged in "research which encompassed a variety of disciplines, including geography, astronomy, mathematics, language, medicine, and music, bringing to each a rigorous scientific curiosity girded in a mystical conception of natural laws and forces. His methods ranged from the traditionally scholastic to the boldly experimental". Given its age, this 1666 work ("Obelesci Aegyptiaci Effossi Interpretatio Hieroglyphica") has held up remarkably well. Still in its original calf boards, the book was professionally strengthened in the early 1990s, with a tasteful re-backed spine which blends in very nicely. The text remains remarkably clean as well, the pages crisp and bright in their original off-white. And the woodcuts, 10 of which are full-page representations, complement the text beautifully --and often dramatically. There is some forgivable offsetting to the pastedowns and the endpapers, and a bit of light chipping and creasing at the lower preliminaries. Very light staining as well running thru a number of the lower page-edges (but not affecting the text at all). Folio, a solidly VG copy. 146 pgs. of text plus Index and "Sopra La Presente Opera--Sonetto Di Gioseffo Pertucci Romano" at the rear. Kircher's books, "lav … [Click Below for Full Description]

LETI, Gregorio.
Delizioso esemplare a pieni margini, freschissimo... Melzi, Dizionario di opere anonime e pseudonime di scrittori italiani, II, p. 473. Willems, Les Elzevier, p. 546, n. 2026.

Spinoza - Meyer, Lodewijk:
Eleutheropoli [Amsterdam Rieuwertsz], 1666. First edition. 4to (200 x 151 mm). (6) leaves, 105 pp., (5) leaves (Epilogus). Marginal tear in M1 and small paper loss in the lower margin of O1-3. Leaves *1, *2, B1, E5 and E6 with lower deckle edges. Early French mottled calf, spine gilt, morocco label. Rubbed along edges, joints starting, corners bumped. - Van der Linde 56; Wolfenbüttel, Spinoza-Ausstellung Nr. 57 (Ausgabe 1673). On the first fly-leaf the work is attributed to Spinoza and later corrected into Meyer. The last fly-leaf has a little note: "Vendu 15.# chez Mr. Turgot en 1744", and a bibliographical reference: "Voyer Cailleau [Dictionnaire bibliographique ?] 3eme vol. page 393". ?The first of the great public intellectual controversies generated by the rise of radical thought erupted in 1666 with the appearance of a short anonymous book entitled Philosophia S. Scripturae Interpres. The author of this sensational and inflammatory work . was a prominent member of the philosophical coterie gathered around Spinoza and Van den Enden - the Amsterdam physician, Latinist, lexicographer, and man of theatre, Lodewijk Meyer (1629-81) . Unsurprisingly, given the book?s sensational content, there was an immediate outcry throughout the United Provinces, precipitating a major commotion of great importance in Dutch culture, which reverberated also in Germany, The Baltic, and to a lesser extent, Italy and England. [the] basic thesis is, that Scripture is frequently ,obscure and doubtful? in meaning and that there is no way to interpret it correctly except by means of ,philosophy?.? … [Click Below for Full Description]

Barbier III, 640 d. - Willems, 2023.
