Lievin CRUYL (Ghendt 1640 - 1720)
Acquaforte, 1666, firmata e datata in lastra in basso a sinistra. Dimensioni 483x400. Etching, 1666, signed and dated on lower left plate. Example in the very rare first state of two, before the engraving adjustments. Magnificent work, printed on contemporary laid paper trimmed to platemark, sings of central paper fold, otherwise in excellent … [Click Below for Full Description]

In 1661, he published his first work with his brother, Gilles; the ‘Zee Atlas' containing thirty-five maps. In 1666 the plates were sold to Jan Jansson van Waesberge, with whom he then co-published the atlas. This edition was expanded to forty-seven maps, and by 1676 there were fifty” (Burden). GOOS, Pieter
[Amsterdam,: Pieter Goos, 1666]. [Amsterdam,: Pieter Goos,, 1666].. Streckende van Cabo Hinloopen tot Rechlewach Double-page engraved map, with fine hand-colour in full, heightened in gold. The first map of present-day New Jersey, and the most detailed map of the region of New Amsterdam, or New York, to date. Probably first published separately and possibly before ‘De Zee Atlas ofte Water-Weereld', as it is larger than the other charts in the atlas. It may also have been included upon request, as it is not often listed in the index. Burden describes it as the rarest of the Goos charts of America. The chart is centered on what “was the lower half of the New Netherlands, which was made up of two distinct colonies, New Amsterdam under the control of the Dutch West India Company, and Nieuwer Amstel on the Delaware River. In 1638, the Swedish colony of ‘t Fort Cristina' was built by Peter Minuit, the same person who had ‘bought' Manhattan Island for the Dutch from the Indians over a decade earlier. Although this was not far from the Dutch fort of Nassou they lived harmoniusly together. Later the Swedish built two more forts, ‘t Fort Elsenburgh' down river in 1642, and ‘Gottenburgh' closer to Fort Nassau in the following year. The Dutch under Peter Stuyvesant responded by building ‘t Fort Kasimiris opposite Fort Elsenbugh in 1651. This was captured by the Swedes in 1654. The following year the Dutch captured the entire Swedish colony. The area of Fort Christina was sold by the company to the city of Amsterdam in 1656. They founded the colony of Nieuwer Amstel, which fell to th … [Click Below for Full Description]

LOOTSMAN, THEUNIS JACOBSZ
SEA CHART OF THE CARIBBEAN "Pascaert van de Carybes, Nieu Nederlandt, Brazil, de Flaemsche en Soute Eylanden ende landen daer omtrent gelegen." Copper engraving published by Theunis Jacobsz Lootsman in Amsterdam 1666. This progenitor chart covers the American shores of the Atlantic Ocean. The objective of the map was to present in atlas form the most desirable information from the "West Indische Paskaert" maps of Willem Blaeu. These charts had previously been sold as loose sheets. To accomplish this, Theunis Jacobsz concentrated on the waters between the Cape Verde islands and Azores, and removed the Gulf of Mexico. New Amsterdam is identified on the map as "Amsterdam". The map is decorated with the family emblem of a sailor holding a lead and line, and the official coat of arms of the Dutch West India Company. This chart was copied by Colom, Doncker, Goos, De Wit and others. Literature: Koeman IV, p. 223-226, Jac 1; Burden 298 Price: Euro1.350,- (excl VAT/BTW).

Johann Vesling (1598-1649) was professor at Padua and in this textbook he 'aimed to explain the parts of the body as they were encountered during dissection and to avoid discussion of theoretical matters in order not to create confusion. However, he departed from his stated purpose to give a clear picture of the circulation of the blood and action of the heart based on Harvey's research. His descriptions of the lymphatics and assertion that four pulmonary veins normally empty into the heart's left auricle are of particular scientific significance' (Heirs of Hippocrates). He was a remarkably successful envoy: he had experience in Turkey, could speak the language fluently and appears to have enjoyed distinction and raised French prestige considerably in the eyes of the Turks (Koç, Istanbul, p.106)”Discours abrégé des asseurez moyens d'aneantir la Monarchie des Princes Ottomans”(p. 101 - 145) is a project for a crusade against the Ottoman Empire by Francois Savary de Brèves that originally appeared as an appendix to Jacques du Castel's Relation de voyages de Monsieur de Breves (1628). In 1585, de Brèves accompanied his relative Jacques Savary de Lancosmeto Constantinople when he became ambassador to the Porte. Savary de Lancosme refused to recognize Henry IV of France, leading to his imprisonment by the Ottomans and the nomination of Savary de Brèves as imterim ambassador. From 1591 to 1605 he was French ambassador to the Otoman Court. He spoke Turkish and Arabic and was famed for his knowledge of Ottoman culture. He tried to incite the Sultan to wage war against Philip II and to limit the activities of Barbary pirates on the French coasts of Provence, but in vain, leading to tense relations between France and the Porte. [Click Below for Full Description]

He was a remarkably successful envoy: he had experience in Turkey, could speak the language fluently and appears to have enjoyed distinction and raised French prestige considerably in the eyes of the Turks (Koç, Istanbul, p.106)"Discours abrégé des asseurez moyens d’aneantir la Monarchie des Princes Ottomans"(p. 101 - 145) is a project for a crusade against the Ottoman Empire by Francois Savary de Brèves that originally appeared as an appendix to Jacques du Castel’s Relation de voyages de Monsieur de Breves (1628). In 1585, de Brèves accompanied his relative Jacques Savary de Lancosme to Constantinople when he became ambassador to the Porte. RICHARD NICOLLS
"Whereas there is a certaine Plott of Ground, with a House or Tenement there upon, Scituate and being at the Ferry, within the Bounds of the Towne of Brucklyn, in the west Riding of Yorkeshire upon Long Island…"RICHARD NICOLLS.Manuscript Document Signed, March 12, 1666, to Egbert van Borsum. 2 pp. with attached wax seal, 12¾ x 16¼ in.After the Dutch surrendered New Amsterdam in September 1664, Richard Nicolls became the first royal governor of New York. He guaranteed the formerly Dutch colonists the possession of their property rights, laws of inheritance, and religious freedom. Here, as British Governor, Nicolls re-grants land at Brooklyn Ferry to Dutch settler Egbert van Borsum, who had operated the ferry since 1654, so that he could continue it under British rule. Based on the history of the ferry, we believe this property is part of today's Fulton Ferry Landing, just south of the Brooklyn Bridge. Businesses in the area now include the River Café and Bargemusic.Historical BackgroundIn July 1654, Egbert van Borsum obtained a patent for two lots at the ferry in Brooklyn and leased from the city exclusive rights to the Brooklyn ferry, which he operated between New Amsterdam (New York) and Brooklyn, from June 1654 to his death in 1676. Government regulations required the ferryman to provide a lodge on both sides of the river, so van Borsum also bought land on the Brooklyn side and erected a tavern. Dutch Governor Peter Stuyvesant granted the Brooklyn property to him in August 1654. This land grant from British Governor Richard Nicolls confirms the ti … [Click Below for Full Description]

Athanasii Kircheri (Athanasius Kircher)
Typographia Varessi, Rome. The uncommon 1666 original printing of Athanasius Kircher's seminal text (written and printed in Latin) on the obelisks of Ancient Egypt --and his interpretation of their hieroglyphics. Kircher (1602-1680) was a remarkably learned figure, a polymath who was viewed by many as the father of Egyptology. A Jesuit priest and scholar, Kircher engaged in "research which encompassed a variety of disciplines, including geography, astronomy, mathematics, language, medicine, and music, bringing to each a rigorous scientific curiosity girded in a mystical conception of natural laws and forces. His methods ranged from the traditionally scholastic to the boldly experimental". Given its age, this 1666 work ("Obelesci Aegyptiaci Effossi Interpretatio Hieroglyphica") has held up remarkably well. Still in its original calf boards, the book was professionally strengthened in the early 1990s, with a tasteful re-backed spine which blends in very nicely. The text remains remarkably clean as well, the pages crisp and bright in their original off-white. And the woodcuts, 10 of which are full-page representations, complement the text beautifully --and often dramatically. There is some forgivable offsetting to the pastedowns and the endpapers, and a bit of light chipping and creasing at the lower preliminaries. Very light staining as well running thru a number of the lower page-edges (but not affecting the text at all). Folio, a solidly VG copy. 146 pgs. of text plus Index and "Sopra La Presente Opera--Sonetto Di Gioseffo Pertucci Romano" at the rear. Kircher's books, "lav … [Click Below for Full Description]

GOOS, Pieter
Pieter Goos, 1666]. The rarest of the Goos charts of North America Double-page engraved map, with fine hand-colour in full, heightened in gold. The first map of present-day New Jersey, and the most detailed map of the region of New Amsterdam, or New York, to date. Probably first published separately and possibly before 'De Zee Atlas ofte Water-Weereld', as it is larger than the other charts in the atlas. It may also have been included upon request, as it is not often listed in the index. Burden describes it as the rarest of the Goos charts of America. The chart is centered on what "was the lower half of the New Netherlands, which was made up of two distinct colonies, New Amsterdam under the control of the Dutch West India Company, and Nieuwer Amstel on the Delaware River. In 1638, the Swedish colony of 't Fort Cristina' was built by Peter Minuit, the same person who had 'bought' Manhattan Island for the Dutch from the Indians over a decade earlier. Although this was not far from the Dutch fort of Nassou they lived harmoniusly together. Later the Swedish built two more forts, 't Fort Elsenburgh' down river in 1642, and 'Gottenburgh' closer to Fort Nassau in the following year. The Dutch under Peter Stuyvesant responded by building 't Fort Kasimiris opposite Fort Elsenbugh in 1651. This was captured by the Swedes in 1654. The following year the Dutch captured the entire Swedish colony. The area of Fort Christina was sold by the company to the city of Amsterdam in 1656. They founded the colony of Nieuwer Amstel, which fell to the English in 1664. Interestingly, the coat-of-arm … [Click Below for Full Description]

Delizioso esemplare a pieni margini, freschissimo... Melzi, Dizionario di opere anonime e pseudonime di scrittori italiani, II, p. 473. Willems, Les Elzevier, p. 546, n. 2026.
