GOOS, Pieter
Amsterdam, 1666. unbound. Map. Uncolored copperplate engraving. Image measures 17.5 x 21.5". This sea chart depicts the British aisles with North oriented to the right. The map extends to include the English Chanel and coastline of Normandy. In addition to port, the index also includes soundings, sand bars, fishing banks and navigational hazards. Each region is adorned with a decorative coat of arms, and embellished compass roses appear at the top and bottom of the map. This map was published in Goos' "De Zee-Atlas Ofte Water-Weereld" and remains in its original uncolored state, which allows Goos' intricate line work to shine. It is in good condition with foxing, soiling, and off-setting, but overall an attractive copy. Small tear on lower right margin not affecting the image. Pieter Goos (1616-1675) was a Dutch cartographer, engraver, publisher, printer, and print-seller based in Amsterdam. He belonged to a noted family of cartographers, headed by his father Abraham, who prepared plates for many maps published in the important atlases of the time. His pilot guide, the "Zee-Spiegel," provided some of the first charts of newly explored regions in the West Indies and Western Africa, and his "Zee-Atlas" is considered one of the best sea atlases of its time. This map is a fine example of Goos' high quality, visually appealing sea charts.

MAXWELL, James Clerk.
A fine copy of the rare first issue of the work which did for electromagnetism what Newton's Principia had done from classical mechanics. Grolier/Horblit 72; Norman 1666; PMM 355; Wheeler Gift Catalogue 1872.<br/><br/> "In 1873, Maxwell published a two-volume Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism that was destined to change the orthodox picture of physical reality. This treatise did for electromagnetism what Newton's Principia had done from classical mechanics. It not only provided the mathematical tools for the investigation and representation of the whole electromagnetic theory, but it altered the very framework of both theoretical and experimental physics. It was this work that finally displayed action-at-a-distance physics and substituted the physics of the field. <br/><br/> "Like Newton's Principia, Maxwell's Treatise did not immediately convince the scientific community. The concepts in it were strange and the mathematics was clumsy and involved. Most of the experimental basis was drawn from the researches of Michael Faraday and one of Maxwell's purposes in writing his treatise was to put Faraday's ideas into the language of mathematical physics - precisely so that orthodox physicists would be persuaded in their importance. <br/><br/> "James Clerks Maxwell's theory of the electromagnetic field is generally acknowledged as one of the outstanding intellectual achievements of the 19th century. By the mid-1890s the 4 "Maxwell's equations" were recognized as the foundation of one of the most successful theories in all of physics, taking their place as companions to Newton' … [Click Below for Full Description]

FARIA Y SOUSA, Manuel de
Lisboa,: Henrique Valente de Oliveira & A. Craesbeeck, 1666-, 1675.. Three volumes, quarto, each with an engraved ornamental title-page; a complete set with 19 engraved and woodblock folding plates (one in duplicate, for a total of 20 plates), numerous woodblock portraits throughout the text; some browning and intermittent water-staining, early ownership inscriptions on title-pages affecting paper; a very good set in attractive eighteenth-century speckled calf, spines gilt with raised bands and original black leather labels. Rare and influential history of the Portuguese empire in Asia, with rich and vibrant descriptions of ritual and customs in India, China, and Southeast Asia.Manuel Faria y Sousa (1590-1649) wrote this history in the tradition of the sixteenth-century masterpiece DÈcadas da Asia by Jo?o de Barros; Boies Penrose characterised him as 'the last writer to attempt a chronicle of the Portuguese empire in the grand manner...' (Travel and Discovery in the Renaissance, p. 283). Avid chronicler and polyglot, Faria y Sousa lived in Madrid for most of his life in the service of the Spanish Crown. Here he collected books, dispatches and manuscript materials of all kinds in preparation of his chronicle of the Portuguese empire across the globe. Accordingly, Asia Portuguesa is of significant historical value for the detailed list of works included in the third volume: 'Included in this bibliography are most of the books then in print which related to Asia, as well as manuscripts prepared by officials and missionaries in the field' (Lach and Van Kley, p.355).Like many co … [Click Below for Full Description]

First edition. *The French theologian, philosopher, and scientist Honore Fabri was born in Dauphine (c. 1607) and died in Rome in 1688. He taught philosophy and mathematics for nearly a decade at the Jesuit college at Lyons, before taking up the post of theologian of the court of the papal penitentiary in the Vatican basilica at Rome, a position he held for thirty years. Fabri wrote numerous books on a wide range of subjects, including philosophy, mathematics, physics, astronomy, and zoology. He formulated a theory of tidal phenomena based on the action of the moon, and gave the first reasonable explanation of why the sky is blue, basing his argument on dispersion of light. (Isaac Newton said that he first learned of Grimaldi's teaching of the diffraction of light from the writings of Fabri). He was also the first to give a reason for Galileo's experiment showing that bodies fall equal distances in equal time. His perceived suppor … [Click Below for Full Description]

Folio (312 x 203mm). pp. (16, incl. frontisp.) 576, (72, incl. 2 blanks), with fine allegorical engraved frontispiece showing a large garden, woodcut printer's device on title and 36 full-page woodcuts in the text. Contemporary calf, gilt decorated spine in 5 compartments. A fine copy. Only the first volume was published. A second volume on trees was never published due to the author's death. "Giancinto (Hyacintho) was director of the Botanical Gardens at Bologna from 1657-1665, following the directorship of his brother Bartolomeo. The genus Ambrosinia was named after the two brothers" (Hunt 303). The plants described in the present volume are in alphabetical order. (Univ. GALLON, Jean-Gaffin
Rare complete set, with the often lacking seventh volume, of this invaluable collection illustrating, with nearly 500 plates, the inventions of all the machines and instruments approved by the Academy of Sciences from its establishment in 1666 to 1735. In many ways this work can be considered the precursor to Diderot and D'Alembert's great <i>Encyclopédie</i>. The work includes the first published illustrations of Pascal's calculating machine (with five plates) together with descriptions and illustrations of calculating machines by Perrault, Lespine, De Hillerin, and De Mean. Stanitz 187; Tomash G-22 (six volume set only).<br/><br/> In 1729, the Academy commissioned the engineer Gallon (1706-75), to edit all descriptions of machines examined and approved by the Academy. Gallon's work documents the technological explosion that occurred in France in the arts, sciences, engineering, and manufacturing. New scientific instruments, clocks, textile machinery, paper-making machines, hydraulic engineering devices, steam shovels, street lights, umbrellas, and calculating machines are among the many inventions covered.. 4to, 252 x 188 mm, fine contemporary calf with richly gilt spines, fully complete with all 498 engraved plates showing 499 illustrations (see below), pp I: [4] viii [4] 215 and plates no 1-67 plates; II: [4] v [3] 192 and plates no. 68-139 (plate 105 in two parts); III: [4] v [3] 207 and plates no 140-214; IV: [4] v [3] 239 and plates no 215-295; V: [4] v [3] 173 and plates 296-360 (plate 329 in two parts); [4] v [3] 196 [36:index] and plates no 361-429; VI: [6] [viii] … [Click Below for Full Description]

SCHWENTER, Daniel.
First edition of this early collection of mathematical puzzles, games and inventions, several of which are illustrated on the title page in small vignettes. The sixteen sections cover a wide range of subjects, from mathematics to optics and hydraulics. Leibniz read a copy of the book in his student days, his study of its many combinatorial problems leading to his first mathematical publication, the <i>Ars combinatoria</i> (1666), which formed the mathematical basis for his proposed 'calculus of thought'.<br/><br/> As well as numerous problems in 'recreational' mathematics, Schwenter's book describes several significant inventions. Perhaps the most notable of these is a fountain pen, which was made from two quills, one of which served as a reservoir for ink inside the other quill. The ink was sealed inside the quill with cork, and ink was squeezed through a small hole to the writing point. Although Schwenter did not invent the fountain pen, his is the first illustration of a working fountain pen in a printed work. <br/><br/> One original invention of Schwenter described in this book is the 'scioptric ball'. This is a universal joint that allows a microscope, mounted on the ball, to be swivelled into any position. Its invention was inspired by Schwenter's studies of the human eye. The scioptric ball provided a firm anchor for a microscope or telescope while allowing the telescope to be swivelled in all directions in order to follow the course of an eclipse or for drawing panoramic views. It was in some ways the first wide-angle lens. <br/><br/> Schwenter's Deliciae is sometim … [Click Below for Full Description]

"Vesling aimed to explain the parts of the body as they were encountered during dissection and to avoid discussion of theoretical matters in order not to create confusion. However, he departed from his stated purpose to give a clear picture of the circulation of the blood and action of the heart based on Harvey's research. His descriptions of the lymphatics and assertion that four pulmonary veins normally empty into the heart's left auricle are of particular scientific significance." CORTESE Giulio Cesare
In 24, pp. (10) + 96; 130 + (2b); 96; 71 + (1b); 84; 72. Legatura in p. pg. coeva. Brunet, II, 313. NEWTON, Isaac.
An exceptionally fine copy, in contemporary Cambridge-style paneled calf, of arguably the most important paper in the history of optics. Dibner 144; Horblit 79a; Evans 29. <br/><br/> "This was Newton's first scientific publication and one of his most important, leading to his brilliant work in optics. In this he recounted how he placed a glass prism in the path of a ray of light entering his darkened chamber thru a window-slit. Instead of a circular pattern of light upon the opposite wall Newton saw an oblong spectrum. A second, inverted prism restored the refracted light into a white ray. He concluded that sunlight (or white light) was composed of a mixture of light of many colors, each having its own degree of refrangibility and that none could be converted into another. This paper led to extended controversies with Hooke, Huygens, Linuc, Lucas, Pardies, and others" (Dibner). <br/><br/> "Newton had encountered the problem of colors during his years of discovery as an undergraduate, and very early he had entertained the idea that colors do not arise from the modification of homogeneous light, as the prevailing theory held, but from the separation of a heterogeneous mixture of rays each of which causes a different sensation of color. Near the beginning of 1666, he first performed his basic experiment of projecting a spectrum with a prism...On 6 February 1672, Newton mailed to Henry Oldenburg, the Secretary of the Royal Society, a summary statement of the theory he had expounded with far more detail and experimental support in his [Lucasian] lectures. Bible. New Testament. Turkish. -Nogai)
Oxford: H. Hall, 1666. FIRST EDITION, Latin title, followed by Turkish title and text in Arabic script, slightly browned around the edges, a few spots, including rust spots with the occasional loss of a letter or two, tear in lower margin of 3h3, not affecting text pp. [iv], 160, 600, small 4to, contemporary blind ruled calf, a bit worn at corners, skilfully rebacked, Macclesfield bookplate and blind stamps, with a number of corrections to the text in a contemporary hand, very good. 'In December 1655 Seaman was appointed secretary of the trade committee (which met at Westminster) at a yearly salary of £100. Some years later he became involved in an international project of evangelization of the Levant, originating in the circle of Samuel Hartlib, whose millenarian convictions included belief in the imminent conversion to Christianity of the Muslims and a determination to hasten the process. In England the plan was fostered by Hartlib himself, Henry Oldenburg, John Durie, and above all Robert Boyle, with Edward Pococke and John Worthington taking a marginal role. It obtained even more support in the Netherlands, thanks mainly to the Bohemian scholar Jan Amos Comenius and the French refugee Petrus Serrarius. A fundamental role was to be played by the translation of the Bible into Turkish. The Dutch, who relied on a Polish convert to Islam in Constantinople, were slow, however, and only the Old Testament was completed. Boyle then turned to Seaman, who had already translated the Johannine epistles into Turkish in 1659, asking him to translate the entire New Testament. By 1664 S … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jose de Carabantes
1666. Seville. Imprenta de Juan Gomez de Blás. In 4to (202 mm x 147 mm). 19. Blue wrappers. First folio soiled with marginal tears eventually touching a few letters, foxing, corners dog-eared. One of the few documents available on the progress of the Capuchin Missions in Venezuela; the imprint contains valuable and rare notices on the manners & customs of the natives (mainly Caribes, Guamonteyes, Chaimas, Tapies, Azaguas & Cores) and with notices of the happenings and relations of Carabantes´ voyage to the region. Carabantes (1628 ? 1694) was one of the first Capuchin missionaries in America; although his name was Velazquez, he changed his name for that of his home town in 1645, when entering the order. In 1657, he arrived in the Island of Margarita (Venezuela), from there he went on to Caracas and Cumana, where he was able to evangelize the Caribes, a tribe notorious for its cruelty and ferocity. As often, the missionary learned the natives tongue and wrote subsequently a vocabulary for the missionaries. His stay in the region lasted for 9 years, after which he had to travel back to Spain to defend his fellow missionaries; after that, he planned to return to the Americas, but his superiors decided to keep him in Spain, where death found him short after. It is attributed to him the conversion of five ?caciques?. The same year, three editions were made, two in Seville (one by Gomez de Blás and one by Francisco Sanchez) and according to Maggs, one in Granada, also by Francisco Sanchez; we found no bibliographic reference to the Granada edition. [Click Below for Full Description]
