SHIOYA, Heisuke, publisher in Osaka
80 full-page woodcut illus. in the text. Eight parts in five vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers, three (of five) orig. block printed title labels on upper covers (covers rubbed), stitched as issued (stitching in 4th volume a little loose). Osaka: Heisuke Shioya, 1666. First edition to appear in Japan of the "Eight Phases of Shaka," the illustrated narrative of the eight pivotal life events of the historical Buddha; this is a most beautiful early book with eighty full-page woodcuts in the "kanazoshi" style. "Shaka" is the Japanese name of the historical Gautama Buddha. "Kanazoshi" is a type of printed Japanese book produced primarily in Kyoto between 1600 and 1680. The books are written in "kana" or a mixture of "kana" and "kanji" and include many kinds of texts: essays, stories, travel guides, and military chronicles. "The doctrines of Buddhism were frequently explained in works of this sort, where the intention was to instruct as well as entertain."-Chibbett, The History of Japanese Printing and Book Illustration, p. 232. The eight steps or phases are: 1. descending from Tusita Heaven; 2. entering his mother's womb; 3. birth; 4. taking religious vows; 5. subjugating demons; 6. attaining enlightenment; 7. turning the wheel of Dharma; and 8. entering nirvana or death. The masterly woodcuts, by an apparently anonymous artist, depict these steps in rich detail. Apart from the rubbing to the covers, a fine set. .

BLAEU, Joan.
Amsterdam: c 1666 - Size: 560 × 650 mm. Copperplate engraving in full original colour, partially heightened in gold. Fine condition. An unusual map of the 'Fenland' regions of East Anglia. The Fens are a naturally marshy region in eastern England. Most of the fens were drained several centuries ago, resulting in a flat, damp, low-lying agricultural region. This map encompasses Cambridge in the west to Kings Lynn and Boston (via Ely) in the east, to Peterborough in the north. The map is embellished with a rococo style mileage scale, a royal coat of arms, and a wonderful title cartouche in the lower right corner. The Atlas Mayor (the Spanish edition of the Atlas Maior) is the rarest edition of what De la Fontaine Verwey called "the greatest and finest atlas ever published". The Spanish edition was never completed. When fire destroyed the Blaeu printing house at the Gravenstraat in Amsterdam in 1672, the final volume was in the press and consequently lost. H. De la Fontaine Verwey, The 'Spanish Blaeu,' in Quaerendo 11 (1981), pp. 83-94.

Goos, Pieter:
Amsterdam, 1666. Copper engraving with period outline color. Sheet size: 17 3/4 x 22 1/8 inches. Very good. Matted. One of the finest and most beautiful 17th-century charts of the Northeast of America, from DE ZEE ATLAS OFTER WATER-WEERELD. The 17th century was the Golden Age of Dutch mapmaking. As the world's greatest trading nation, marine cartography was a particular specialty, and no one produced more lavish sea charts than Pieter Goos. Finely drawn and engraved, printed on top quality paper, and beautifully colored, they were intended more for the merchant collector than the practical mariner. Goos' ZEE- ATLAS was the companion marine atlas of choice for Joan Blaeu's famous terrestrial atlas, the ATLAS MAIOR. This is the general chart of New Netherland from the ZEE- ATLAS. It covers the Atlantic coast of America from Cape Cod to Cape Hatteras. The emphasis is on the Dutch colony of New Netherland. New Amsterdam (the future New York) is shown at the tip of Manhattan Island. Many other place names of Dutch origin appear, including "Staten Eylandt," "Lange Eylandt," and "Vlysingen" (Flushing). Along the Delaware River a number of Dutch settlements are shown, including Fort Casimir, Nassau, and Elsenburgh, as well as the Swedish Fort Christina. The Schuylkill River, site of the future metropolis of Philadelphia, is also located. In New England, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket are shown with their present names, and several early English settlements, such as "New Plymouth," are located. The delineation of the Chesapeake Bay is also quite good, with Jamestown locat … [Click Below for Full Description]

JANSSON, Jan.
Amsterdam: Heirs of Jan Jansson, 1666, Latin text. Original colour. 390 x 500mm. Trimmed to plate and laid on a new sheet of text, as issued, paper toned Overijssel, with decorative cartouches for the title, key and scale. This example is a marriage of the correct map and text: if the wrong map was printed on a sheet of text it was cheaper to stick the right map on the text rather than reprinting the text. The glue appears to have caused the paper to brown. Published in the 'Atlas Contractus', a two-volume atlas, published two years after Jansson's death by his son-in-law, Jan Jansson van Waesbergen. Gold leaf edges on pages in very good condition. Overall an exceptionally bright and clean red and black printed missal. First and only edition after the death of Philip IV of Spain. PHILIP IV. (1605-1665), king of Spain, eldest son of Philip III and his wife Margaret, sister of the emperor Ferdinand II., was born at Valladolid on the 8th of April 1605. His reign, after a few passing years of barren successes, was a long story of politi¬cal and military decay and disaster. The king has been held responsible for the fall of Spain, which was, however, due in the main to internal causes beyond the con¬trol of the most despotic ruler, however capable he had been. Philip certainly pos¬sessed more energy, both mental and physical, than his father. There is still in exis¬tence a translation of Guicciardini which he wrote with his own hand in order to qualify himself for government by acquiring knowledge of political history. He was a fine horseman and keen hunter. His artistic taste was shown by his p … [Click Below for Full Description]

Karl Eusebius, Fürst von Liechtenstein (1611-1684).
Prag, 7. V. 1666.. 1½ SS. auf Doppelblatt. Folio.
