Very Good Condition. 2 volumes in later (ca. 1800) full vellum, some toning, surface marks, spines darkened, but quite sound and attractive overall. Eleutheropoli [Amsterdam]: no printer/no publisher [J. Rieuwertsz] 4to (20 cm;7.9"). [12], 105, [1 (blank)] pp., [7 (2 final blanks) ff.. 1666 Uncommon first edition with a false imprint: Important hermeneutical treatise, arguing that the Bible should be interpreted through Cartesian rationality. Originally published anonymously, the work was for some time attributed to Benedictus de Spinoza, who was both a personal friend and mentor to Meijer (also sometimes called Ludwig or Louis Meyer); it rapidly gained a fair amount of notoriety, was condemned, inspired a number of rebuttals and defenses, went through several editions in both Latin and Dutch, and influenced Spinoza's writings. Famously, it called for a response from Spinoza, nothing less than his Tractatus Theologico-Politicus, published anonymously in 1670. Provenance: Ownership signature of "A. Schülin," Amsterdam, [16]92. An undeciphered 18th-century ownership "ex libris" opposite the title-page. Contemporary vellum over boards, binding lightly age-toned. Gatherings F, G, H, & I browned or foxed, otherwise a very nice copy, with a few old notes and marks in pencil.

Torriano, Giovanni
London: F. and T. W. for the author, 1666. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good+. Cambridge-style period calf, borders and cornerpieces in blind; folio; 3 parts in 1 volume; pp. [14], 338, [7], 242, [7], 116, with title-page printed in red and black, sectional titles, decorative headpieces. Lacking only the license leaf. Rebacked; corners renewed; some faint toning and foxing, but overall nice and bright. An excellent copy, with an interesting provenance -- front paste-down bears the armorial bookplates of Alan Lubbock, and Fletcher of Saltoun (1655-1716). Andrew Fletcher was praised by Wodrow in his "History of the Sufferings of the Children of Scotland," for "his fine taste in all manner of polite learning, [and] his curious library," which is preserved at Saltoun Hall in a room built expressly for it in 1775 by his grand nephew. Fletcher also wrote "Discorso delle cose di Spagna..." with the imprint "Napoli," though it was likely printed in Edinburgh. Torriano had published abbreviated versions of "Piazza Universale" in 1642 and 1649, with none of the anecdotes and extended explanations in the present volume. Wing T1928.

De Bonis, Napoli 1666 - In 24, pp. (10) + 96; 130 + (2b); 96; 71 + (1b); 84; 72. Brunet, II, 313. Rosende, Antonio Gonzalez de
Madrid: Julian de Paredes, 1666. First edition. Folio, half-title, frontis. portrait, title, ff. [28], pp 534 (actually 532: error in pagination), ff 12 (index). First biography of Palafox, written at the behest of the cardinal of Toledo, Moscoso y Sandoval, who had been one of Palafox's greatest friends. Fr. Gonzalez de Rosende was a franciscan friar, professor of theology at the university of Alcala de Henares, prefect of his order in Spain, and commissar of the Inquisition. Palafox y Mendoza was Bishop of Puebla, Mexico, Archbishop-elect of Mexico, Viceroy, etc., etc. One of the most important figures of colonial Mexico, Palafox (1600 - 59) was a Spaniard, abandoned as an infant, in a basket no less, but rescued and adopted into a noble family. He rose quickly to prominence, and was sent to Mexico as bishop of Puebla. There he founded, among many other accomplishments, the Biblioteca Palofoxiana, still in existence. He quickly came into conflict with the regular clergy, who had enormous power in Mexico and were a world and law to themselves. Palafox tried to bring them under the control of the secular authorities, i.e. the bishops. For a time he had the suport of the king and even the pope, until he tangled with the Jesuits, whose power was too great. He was abruptly called back to Spain and the bishopric of Osma, which was seen as a demotion, and certainly marked the end of his political power. Of notable sanctity, he received the necessary votes for beatification -- the first step to sainthood -- but Pope Pius VI suspended final decision. This work of Rosende was repri … [Click Below for Full Description]

KIRSCHBAUM, Johann Michael.
WorldCat (1 copy); cf. Berlin Kat 1666-1667 (1771 & 1793 eds.); not in Lotz. Fifth edition, printed from the plates of the 1771 first edition, of an extremely rare and richly decorative weaver's sample book containing about 300 models for weaving cloth in all sorts of patterns (some wholly abstract, some with acorns, flowers, trees, etc.) and colours. The title-page indicates that it intended for master and journeyman weavers, as well as amateurs. Kirchenbaum (1725-1782) was a master weaver in Heilbronn. Some of the patterns create odd visual affects reminiscent of 1960s op-art. Others resemble patchwork quilt patterns. Since all follow the grid of the warp and woof they foreshadow today's digital art based on a grid of pixels. All editions are extremely rare. We have located only one other copy of the present edition, at the International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam. The letterpress text provides explanations plate by plate and also includes the text of Kirchbaum's preface to the first edition of 1771 and the publisher's new preface for the present 1836 edition. With an 1839 purchase inscription. He or another early owner drew a weaving pattern on the back of one leaf in brown ink. This ink drawing has bled through, slightly affecting the pattern in plate 43. The book is otherwise in very good condition (remarkably good for this sort of practitioner's model book), with an unobtrusive water stain in many leaves and the fore-edge margin of one leaf extended. The binding is rubbed and there is a chip in the spine. A rare weaver's model book: an essential primary so … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Karl IX.]
Cologne, Gerard Willemse, 1666. 12mo. (8),+ 152,+ (8),+ 9,+ (1) pp. Minor spotting. Worn contemporary full calf, spine gilt with raised bands, red marbled edges. From the library of Ericsberg, with the bookplate of Carl Jedvard Bonde. VD17 12:102186W (one library only).
