1665 - Antique print, titled: 'Peking' - Original antique print showing a view of Bejing in China with its ramparts. On the left a pagoda. Description: This attractive original old antique print / plate originates from: 'Gezandtschap der Nederlandtsche Oost-Indische Compagnie . aan den grooten Tartarischen Cham, den tegenwoordigen keizer van China.' (Nieuhof's China expedition from 1655-1657.) by J. Nieuhof. This German edition was published in 1666, a year after the first Dutch edition of 1665. The work was famous for its wealth of engravings, while the text was based on earlier (Jesuit) sources as well.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Johan Nieuhof' after an anonymous artist. Johan / Jan / Johannes Nieuhof / Nieuhoff / Neuhof (1618-1672) was a Dutch traveler who wrote about his journeys to Brazil, China and India. The most famous of these was a trip of 2,400 km from Canton to Peking in 1655-1657, which enabled him to become an authoritative Western writer on China. Johan Nieuhof was born in Uelsen, Germany, of which his father (originally from Zwolle) was mayor. Nieuhof left for Brazil in 1640 as a reserve officer-candidate - from then on, barring two short family visits in 1658 and 1671, he spent all the rest of his life abroad. After an adventurous career in the service of the Dutch East India Company (or VOC) - between 1660 and 1667 he occupied posts in India and on Ceylon - he then lived in Batavia until 1670. He then disappeared without trace on Madagascar, traveling in a sloop from which he had landed to seek drinking water. The engravings are made after Nieuhoff's d … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Rochefort, Charles de]
Rotterdam, 1665. Engraved title, title-leaf, [32],583,[13]pp. plus three folding plates. Forty-four copper plate engravings. Quarto. Old vellum. Vellum dust soiled, small portion of spine lacking. Occasional light foxing or toning. Bottom margin of one folding plate trimmed, slightly affecting explanation. Another folding plate neatly detached. Overall a very nice copy. The second French edition. This copy contains the armorial bookplates of Mathew Wilson and Frances Mary Richardson Currer. Currer (1785-1861) was a renowned British book collector who occasionally had privately printed catalogues of her collection produced. Her library, said to have been comprised of some 20,000 fine books, was sold through Sotheby's in 1862. "The books were all in choice condition, many with fine bindings....The books contain an heraldic book-plate, and are generally noticeable for their fine condition" - DNB. Mathew Wilson was Currer's grandfather or father (both were of the same name), of Eshton Hall, Yorkshire. This important work on the islands of the Caribbean, with interesting information on Florida, Georgia, and the Eskimos, was originally published in French in 1658, its main purpose being the encouragement of Huguenot emigration to America. Its greatest contribution was the impressive marshalling of contemporary information on the Caribbean islands, especially the French and British colonies developing as sugar plantations. However, Rochefort also includes a long account of an "Apalacite" kingdom of Indians said to exist in Florida and present- day Georgia, fanciful in its … [Click Below for Full Description]

RETZ, Jean-François-Paul de Gondi, cardinal de;
[Click Below for Full Description]

He was brought up in Amsterdam, and studied law at the University of Leiden before going into partnership with his father in the 1630s. Although his father Willem had cartographic interests, having studied under the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe and having manufactured globes and instruments, his primary business was as a printer. It was under the control of Joan that the Blaeu printing press achieved lasting fame by moving towards the printing of maps and expanding to become the largest printing press in Europe in the 17th century.By the 1660s the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (or Atlas Maior as it had became known by this time) had expanded to between 9 and 12 volumes, depending on the language. Lievin CRUYL (Ghendt 1640 - 1720)
Opera molto rara e ricercata. Magnifico esemplare della tiratura di Carlo Losi. Etching with engraving, 1665. A fine impression, with plate tone, of the third state of three, printed on 2 sheets of contemporary laid paper, full margins, very good condition. This map was published for the first time in 1665 by De Rossi; it is one of the rare images of the city depicting, at the same time, an iconographic and perspective system. The views are the same that the Flemish artist engraved afterwards as a sort of personal catalogue. The first state has been printed by Giovanni Battista De Rossi in 1665. The plate was then published by Matteo Gregorio de Rossi in 1696 and finally reissued by Carlo Losi, in 1773. It has been engraved by Giulio Testone on two copper plates.
