Maries Church in Cambridge 2nd edition inlarged (sic), 1665. Hardcover. Very Good-. Two Works in one volume with separate pagination & signatures. He lists credulity, exaggeration, superstition, downright lies & fallacies for misunderstanding of what is being witnessed. The uses of natural philosophy in testing & good judgement in verification. The final part deals similarly with vulgar prophacies. The side notes give references from antiquity and the Bible. A neat tight book on the natural and the supernatural (WING 4948 & 4949).

AA, Pieter van der.
Leiden., 1665. Copper engraving. Uncoloured. Very good condition. Good wide margins. The print is clean and crisp. Size: 32 x 23.5 cm. A truly apocalyptic print depicting an earthquake and erupting volcano in Japan ("Jedo"). Panicking people in the foreground, a flood or mudslide to the right sweeping trees and buildings along with it, destroyed buildings and trees, dark brooding clouds and a fiery erupting volcano on the horizon, all these add up to make a truly terrifying scene. Most antique prints present an idealised vision of their subjects, but this view however, hides nothing in its portrayal of a natural disaster. Nieuhoff's L'Ambassade de la Compagnie Orientale.

KEMP, William
London: printed for, and are to be sold by D. Kemp, at his shop,, 1665. Collected by W. Kemp, Mr. of Arts. Small quarto (178 × 129 mm), pp. [6], 47, 50-94, [2]; irregular pagination but collates complete. Recent sprinkled sheep to style, double blind rules, unlettered. British Museum sale duplicate 1787 stamp on title verso blank. Small contemporary ink inscription at upper outer corner of title, one or two minor blemishes, an excellent copy. First edition. Kemp was a Holborn medical practitioner writing just as the devastating outbreak of bubonic plague reached the city of London: his postscript is dated 22 July 1665, three weeks after the king and his court had fled the stricken city. Though not a member of the college, Kemp was a supporter of the College of Physicians and their recommendations. (The publisher was perhaps his brother; neither Kemp produced another work.) His book gives symptoms of the plague, various theories as to its aetiology, suggested prophylactics (including an enthusiastic recommendation of tobacco smoking), and recipes for suitable medicines. At the end he notes that these medicines can be home-made, or bought ready-made "at Mr. John Dunsons at the Sign of the Pestle and Mortar in Coleman-street, or at Mr. Hamnet Rigbies at the Seven Stars in Fetter-Lane." His final address "to the readers" disavows any notion of profiting from the sale of such medicines himself, and emphasizes that his intended readership is the poorer sort who cannot afford expensive remedies.

CEREMONIAL -
[Click Below for Full Description]

First edition, small 4to, pp. [8], 56; preserving the preliminary blank leaf, collating [A1]-H4; Madan 2689; Wing F-2523; bound with: [Langbaine, Gerard, the Elder], The foundation of the universitie of Oxford, with a catalogue of the principall founders and speciall benefactors of all the colledges... London: pr. by M. S. for Thomas Jenner, 1651, first edition, pp. [2], 17; collating [A]-[B4], C2; Wing L-370. Together in recent brown calf-backed marbled boards, red morocco label on gilt-decorated spine; both trimmed close at top with the occasional partial loss of a letter or two, first title page with old blindstamp in the margin, title to the second rather browned; both works with light foxing and staining. Fulman presents texts of documents granting academic privileges and dignities, establishing the school, outlining the administration of it, and creating the curriculum. He also details the school's statutes and documents which relate to the library, the various colleges, and the lecture halls. The book was published again in 1675 under the title Notitia Oxoniensis Academias. Langbaine for his part gives a history of Oxford, emphasizing the creation of its colleges.
