MILTON, JOHN
London: by J.M. for John Starkey. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE of Paradise Regained, with the first edition of Samson Agonistes (as issued); in beautiful Riviere and Son binding. "In August 1665 Milton had shown the unpublished manuscript of Paradise Lost to Thomas Ellwood, who read it and told Milton that 'thou hast said much here of Paradise Lost, but what hast thou to say of Paradise Found?' (Masson, 6.496). In the following year Ellwood visited Milton in London, and Milton showed him the manuscript of Paradise Regained, graciously telling Ellwood that 'this is owing to you; for you put it into my head by the question you put to me at Chalfont' (ibid., 6.654). It is possible that Paradise Regained, which depicts the temptations of Jesus in the desert, owes its pacific tone to the influence of the values of the Quaker community at Chalfont St Giles. The Jesus of Paradise Regained is not a warrior like the Son in book 6 of Paradise Lost, but rather a man who outwits his opponent…" (Dictionary of National Biography). This first edition of Paradise Regained includes the first edition of Milton's classic tragic drama Samson Agonistes, as issued. First issue: With "loah" for "loth" on F2 (p. 67). Complete with license leaf and errata. London: by J.M. for John Starkey, 1671. Octavo (173x106mm), nineteenth century full crimson crushed morocco by Riviere and Son with elaborate gilt tooling on boards; rebacked with original spine laid down. SCHOOCK, MARTIN.
Amsterdam, P. van den Berge, 1665. 12:o. Extra grav. titelblad,(10),426 s.

GOOS, Pieter
Amsterdam, 1665. unbound. Map. Uncolored copperplate engraving. Image measures 17.5 x 21.5". This sea chart depicts the British Isles with North oriented to the right. The map extends to include the English Chanel and coastline of Normandy. In addition to ports, the index also includes soundings, sand bars, fishing banks and navigational hazards. Each region is adorned with a decorative coat of arms, and embellished compass roses appear at the top and bottom of the map. This map was published in Goos' "De Zee-Atlas Ofte Water-Weereld" and remains in its original uncolored state, which allows Goos' intricate line work to shine. It is in good condition with slight foxing, soiling, and off-setting. Pieter Goos (1616-1675) was a Dutch cartographer, engraver, publisher, printer, and print-seller based in Amsterdam. He belonged to a noted family of cartographers, headed by his father Abraham, who prepared plates for many maps published in the important atlases of the time. His pilot guide, the "Zee-Spiegel," provided some of the first charts of newly explored regions in the West Indies and Western Africa, and his "Zee-Atlas" is considered one of the best sea atlases of its time. This map is a fine example of Goos' high quality, visually appealing sea charts.

BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER in Greek:
Trans. by James Duport. Title within typographical border. 18 p.l., 126 pp., 1 blank leaf. Large 12mo, cont. panelled calf. Cambridge: [1665]. [bound with as usual]:PSALMS in Greek: Psalterion toy Dabid, kata tous Hebdomekonta, Eis ta tmemata, ta en te tes Anglikanes Ekklesias leitourgia nomizomena, dieremeion. Woodcut coat-of-arms of Cambridge University on title (repeated on verso of p. 115). Title within ruled border. 1 p.l., 115, [1] pp., one blank leaf, 117-71 pp. Large 12mo. Cambridge: 1664. First edition of Duport's translation into Greek of the Book of Common Prayer, one of five Prayer Books listed by Harrison in The Library of Isaac Newton, and a tangible link with a crucial episode in Newton's career. Before his installation as dean of Peterborough in July of 1664, one of Duport's last acts as vice-master of Trinity College, Cambridge, was to elect Newton to a scholarship. The election is not without its mysteries, since Newton had not shone in the University's ordinary subjects and he was without powerful connections. But the election was momentous: "with his election, Newton ceased to be a sizar. He now received commons from the college, a livery allowance...and a stipend...Far more important, he received the assurance of at least four more years of unconstrained study...He could abandon himself completely to the studies he had found. The capacity Newton had shown as a schoolboy for ecstasy, total surrender to a commanding interest, now found in his early manhood its mature intellectual manifestation."-Westfall, Never at Rest. RICCIOLI, G.B
Bologna : Heirs of Vittorio Benacci , 1665. Scarce first edition of Riccioli's anti-Copernican, Tychonic geo-centrist cosmology, presenting an astronomy reformed, so he claims, of theoretical as well as observational errors, and considered a conclusion to the Almagestum novum of 1651. As the Jesuits' leading astronomer, his observational and experimental achievements offered significant refinements of Galilean quantitative experimental procedures in terms of accuracy, and although intended to refute Galileo, his results often unwittingly confirmed them.

Martini, Martin [Martino]
The rare first Spanish edition of Martini?s famed History of China. 1665. Madrid. Joseph Fernandez de Buenca. In 8vo (137 mm x 90 mm). 20 ff. + 188. Eighteenth century calf, spine gilt with floral tooling and red morocco lettering piece, gently rubbed, upper compartment restored. Upper margin a little short, paper browned as always for Spanish 17th century paper, ex libris removed from verso of title page causing foxing and creasing, ff. 51 with paper loss just touching one letter, a few foxing spots but overall very good. First edition. This Spanish translation was prepared by Estevan de Aguilar y Zuñiga. Martini (1614 - 1661) was a remarkable Italian Jesuit, cartographer and traveller; he is known for his history of China and his cartographic renderings of the country; the latter so important, that eventually were published as one of the volumes of Blaeu?s monumental "Atlas Nuevo de la extrema Asia, o descripcion geographica del Imperio de las Chinas", published in 1658. Martini sailed to China in 1640, making port in Macau in 1642, where he stayed for over 10 years ?studying the cartography, language and history of China, and becoming the superior of the mission at Hang-Tcheou; after that he parted back to Europe to work on his atlas. After a few years he made his way back to China until his death. His fame and the respect gained were partially due to his use of the Chinese cartography available at the time, thus not only relying on European maps but on local maps as well. Death would find him in China in 1661. Even today, in China, he is arguably the most regarded missi … [Click Below for Full Description]

GRIMALDI, Francesco Maria
Added title-page with a large engraved vignette & woodcut diagrams in the text. Both titles printed in red & black. 11 p.l. (including the added title-page), 535 pp., 8 leaves. 4to, cont. calf (rebacked & corners repaired, some faint dampstains). Bologna: Heirs of V. Benati, 1665. First edition, the copy of William Molyneux (1656-98), astronomer, founder of the Dublin Philosophical Society, and author of the first treatise on optics in English (for more on Molyneux, see D.S.B., IX, pp. 464-66). This is Grimaldi's only book; in it he describes the discovery of optical diffraction. This is perhaps the rarest of all great optical books, especially in such good condition, and marks the first scientific attempt to establish a comprehensive wave theory of light. The diffraction experiments which Grimaldi describes here show "that a new mode of transmission of light had been discovered and that this mode contradicts the notion of an exclusively rectilinear passage of light. Diffraction thus gave prima facie evidence for a fluid nature of light. The name 'diffraction' comes from the loss of uniformity observed in the flow of a stream of water as it 'splits apart' around a slender obstacle placed in its path."-D.S.B., V, p. 544. Grimaldi repeatedly states that colors are not something different from light but are modifications of light produced by the fine structure of the bodies which reflect it, and probably consisting of an alteration in the type of motion and in the velocity of the light. The different colors are produced when the eye is stimulated by light o … [Click Below for Full Description]

COVENS, Jean and MORTIER, Cornielle
Amsterdam: Covens and Mortier. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 20.25" x 27.5". This rare reference engraving illustrates principal terms of geometry, fortification, and artillery for use in battle during the mid-18th century. The top left section shows geometrical shapes and tools of mathematical drafting. The top center and right sections show plans and schemata for the construction and layout of fortifications. At the left and right center of the engraving are illustrations of battle artillery, and in the middle of the sections, more plans for the situation and organization of forts. At the bottom, surrounding the cartouche, are representations of cannons and other firearms. The title is given in French above the map and in Dutch in a decorative title cartouche at the bottom crowned with two eagles. The print is from a Dutch edition of De L'Isle's work entitled "Atlas Nouveau, Contenant Toutes Les Parties Du Monde, Ou sont exactement Remarquées les Empires, Monarchies, Royaumes, Etats, Republiques &c." It is in very good condition with some toning. Some chips and small tears to the margin not affecting the image. Small crease to lower right corner. The Amsterdam publishing firm of Covens and Mortier (1665-c. 1862) was established by Cornelius Mortier and Jean Covens. Together, the two republished the works of great 17th and early 18th century Dutch and French cartographers such as De L'Isle, Allard, Jansson, De Wit, and Ottens. The firm quickly grew into one of the largest and most prolific Dutch publishing outfits of the 18th century and enjoyed a long an … [Click Below for Full Description]

These six comedies and tragedies — Les illustres ennemis, comedie; Berenice, tragedie; Timocrate, tragedie; La mort de l'empereur commode, tragedie; Darius, tragedie; and Le charme de la voix, comedie — comprise six of the seven plays making up the second volume only of a five-volume set, Les tragédies et comédies de Th. Thomas Rosewell
London: London - Unknown, 1665 Book. Good. Half-Leather. 1st Edition. [16] pp 1-255 [1] The first and only edition of Thomas Rosewell's Presbyterian response to the horrors of the 1665 outbreak of the plague in London in which he suggests that the pestilence was God's retribution for the sins of the English ungodly. The octavo volume has been crudely recased in quarter sheep over marbled boards, probably in the eighteenth century, with the original sheep binding cut away and reattached to marbled boards which appear to have been borrowed from another book. Both the marbled boards and leather spine are very worn although an early morocco spine label is retained. Internally the text is complete (A-R8) and extensively browned, especially the first and last few gatherings. A triangle at the lower corner of the title page (half inch along by one inch up foreedge) is nearly detached. Internally the hinges are open. Rosewell's Causes and Cure of the Pestilence is an uncommon work with just one copy recorded at auction in the last thirty years. ESTC R41076. Athanasius KIRCHER (1601 circa - 1680)
Bibliografia: Bibliografia: Shirley, The Mapping of the World, 459. Extraordinary map, both form the physical and hydrographic point of view, depicting ocean currents, volcanoes and deep-sea chasms. The map is taken from Kircher?s Mundus Subterraneus . The Jesuit scholar, Athanasius Kircher, was one of the first compilers of semi-scientific knowledge about the physical features of the world. Kircher's theories included the notion that the world's oceans were all interconnected and subterranean tunnels are shown connecting the oceans and seas. Copperplate, in excellent condition. Incisione in rame, 346x415.
