Athanasius Kircher
1665. Kircher's fascinating map of the Americas, from his Mundus Subterraneous. This map was used to illustrate one of his most famous and influential works, a study of the world's ocean currents, tides, volcanic distribution, and core structure of the planet. This map along with the others from Kircher's work, illustrates for the first time the world's ocean currents. The map is remarkably accurate for the period, although the massive crater at the headwaters of the Amazon River is certainly a curious addition to the map. The primary purpose of this map was to illustrate the Ocean's currents, and in that regard, it was remarkably accurate, surpassing the work of Robert Dudley, who illustrated only the local currents in the regions covered. References: Burden 382, ill. pl. 382, p. 487 Image size: 342mm x 407mm (13.68" x 16.28") Condition: In good condition, with centre fold as issued. Louis P. John Bill and Christopher Barker This Bible has been in my family since 1848
United Kingdom: John Bill and Christopher Barker. This Bible dating from 1665 has been rebound in the last 100 years. It is in reasonable condition but being interleaved it has clergymen's notes appended to the interleaved blank pages. This Interleaved Bible in two volumes was published by John Bill and Christopher Barker in 1665. It is thought that it lay on their shelves until about 1770 when an interested clergyman purchased it and had it bound in two volumes. They were left to a Rev W Richardson who I believe was a clergyman in Frampton-on Severn (UK). His executor, a Rev Joseph Hyatt acquired it and, on 16th April 1848, he gave it to my great great Grandfather and it has been then passed down my family. We have family Bibles already and my late Father was interested in selling it in the 1950s. He showed it to the British Museum who did not know such a Bible existed and asked if he would give it to them. He declined to do so. I am about to downsize to a smaller property so now is a good time to part with it as well as Books of Common Prayer dated 1580, 1582 and 1700 which the Family has owned for many years.

Izaak WALTON [Thomas Wharton, anatomist]
[pp] 22; pp 208 [lacking frontispiece] Presentation copy with manuscript corrections to Walton's friend cited in The Compleat Angler, the anatomist Thomas Wharton, inscribed on the author's behalf but not in his hand on the half title and with seventeenth century emendations to the text in the same hand throughout. Bound in seventeenth century English calf with a triple blind fillet to the boards and a gilt edgeroll to boards. Stylishly rebacked with a new red morocco label and four raised bands, lacking the frontispiece portrait of Hooker, the final two gatherings, 'N' and 'O' detached. The presentation inscription made at the time of publication appears above the imprimatur as 'Ffor Dor Wharton' with calligraphic superscript 'r' at the end of 'Ffor' and 'Dor: this matches Christ Church College, Oxford's similar contemporary presentation copy inscribed ffor Dor: Alestrye'; the binding also matches exactly the Christ Church copy. In this copy, and in the same hand (using the superscript 'r') the printed errata have been corrected in the text at pages 6, 58 and 106 where an additional error has been corrected three lines above where the word 'fault' was misplaced at the end of the paragraph. There are additional corrections at pages 108, 111, 113 (not 117 as per printed errara), 137 - actually 136 and finally page 167. Thomas Wharton is famed as one of few physicians to have stayed in London during the final 1665 outbreak of plague and this presentation copy almost certainly arrived with Walton's friend during this nightmarish moment in the city's history. It shows a theoretical volcanic system in the earth. Kircher, who lived in Rome, had been inspired by the tremendous earthquake that hit Calabria in 1638 and the volcanic eruption of Vesuvius in 1637. This system was also connected with a hydrosystem causing the movement of water to and from the surface - hence ocean currents, earthquakes, tides, and more. The earth is surrounded by clouds and cherubs blowing.
