Lievin CRUYL
Roma. Opera molto rara e ricercata. Magnifico esemplare della tiratura di Carlo Losi. Etching with engraving, 1665. A fine impression, with plate tone, of the third state of three, printed on 2 sheets of contemporary laid paper, full margins, very good condition. This map was published for the first time in 1665 by De Rossi; it is one of the rare images of the city depicting, at the same time, an iconographic and perspective system. The views are the same that the Flemish artist engraved afterwards as a sort of personal catalogue. The first state has been printed by Giovanni Battista De Rossi in 1665. The plate was then published by Matteo Gregorio de Rossi in 1696 and finally reissued by Carlo Losi, in 1773. It has been engraved by Giulio Testone on two copper plates. A very rare and important map of Rom … [Click Below for Full Description]

Extremely RARE 17th Century OXFORD EDITION England Gazette 1665 Old Newspaper (Note: additional images are located below the description) Offered is an original, historic, & collectible old newspaper: THE OXFORD GAZETTE, England, January 4, 1665 (1666 by today's calendar) * Earliest & Rarest of newspapers to be had This is an extremely famous--and rare--title, being the predecessor of the famous "London Gazette", the oldest continually published English language newspaper in the world. Because of the Plague at this time, the Royal Court had removed itself from London to Oxford when this newspaper began, so issues #1 thru #23 were published in Oxford (actually published simultaneously in London & Oxford), and when the contagion had subsided & the Court returned to London this newspaper went with it and renamed itself "The London Gazette" with issue #24, and the rest is history. This is issue number 15. The front page has much mention of Admiral du Ruyter, the most famous naval figure in Dutch history. The balance of the front page, and much of the back page, is taken up with various military reports from Europe, including much concerning the Dutch. The back page also has mention that: "...17 prisoners from Newgate, who were aboard a Barbadoes ship, got off...went ashore...master of the ship made pursuit after them...". Of great significance is the note at the bottom of the back page which gives the week's tally of deaths. Keeping in mind that the Great Plague was ravaging England at this time, this brief report is a contemporary report of such deaths, reading: "The Account o … [Click Below for Full Description]

South America Kircher, Athanasius (1602-1680)
1665. Amsterdam, Kircher, [c.1665]. Original Engraving. Plate Size: 20.1 cm x 33.9 cm. Sheet Size: 24.7 cm x 39 cm. Original Map. Very good condition. Very minor instance of foxing to cartouche. Map is orientated to the North. Dutch text on reverse. A richly elaborate and highly imaginative map of South America ('America Inferior') from the Panama Isthmus in the north to Terra del Fuego in the south. The south part of Jamaica and Barbados are shown near the top of the map. Ascension Island is also shown off the coast. The continent appears bulging and does not bear the more elongated form of later maps. River, lake, forest, mountain and volcano features are engraved on the map: the Amazon river, Andes mountains and Lake Titicacca ('Parime lacus, alias Titicacca') are all shown. The settlements of Darien, Carragocaro, and 'Buenos ayros' are identified. 'Peru', 'Chile' and 'Paraquay' all appear on the map, but political details - such as borders - are absent. An unknown and imagined 'Terra Austrasis Incognita' lies at the bottom of the map. Decorative title cartouche at the lower section of the map. However, the map stands out for the craterous lake depicted at the centre of the map, between the Equator and the Tropic of Capricorn. It is captioned as 'Sub Andibus Hydrophylacium America precipuum'. This is one of several maps prepared by Kircher to illustrate his unique hydro-geographic theory. Kircher hypothesized that tides and currents are caused by water moving to and from a massive subterranean ocean. Southern Africa - Kircher, Athanasius (1602 - 1680)
1665. Amsterdam Kircher, [c.1665]. Original engraving. Plate Size: 41.5 cm x 34 cm. Sheet Size: 47.6 cm x 39.2 cm. Original map. In very good condition. Some very light traces of foxing near outer margins. Some very minor ink staining evident near 'Oceanus Orientasis' text. Otherwise, a very clean and bright map. An elaborately detailed and richly imaginative map of southern Africa from the Congo/ 'Le Lac de Zaire' down to the Cape of Good Hope on the 'Coste De Cafres' and including Madagascar. River and mountain features engraved on map. 'Oceanus Aethiopicus' and 'Oceanus Orientasis' are also identifed. However the map stands out for the subterranean lake depicted underneath a mountain range at the centre of the map. This is one of several maps prepared by Kircher to illustrate his unique hydro-geological theory. Kircher hypothesized that tides and currents are caused by water moving to and from a massive subterranean ocean. Kircher further postulated that water entered and exited the subterranean ocean via a number of great abysses situated around the globe. In addition, he believed that massive underground lakes lay beneath most of the world's great mountain ranges – one such lake is apparent here and the obvious centerpiece of the map under the fabled Mountains of the Moon that were purported by the Ancients to be a possible source of the Nile. The genesis of this map has its origin in an account of visiting a lake that was believed to be the Nile's source left by a contemporary of Kircher, Peter Páez, a Jesuit explorer. Kircher copied the account and incorporate … [Click Below for Full Description]

Woodcut initials and ornaments. Slight browning, fore-edge a little dusty, occasional, minor mainly marginal spotting, I: traces of adhesive at gutter of title, lower outer blank corner of Y4 torn, II: title slightly adhering to ffep, III: small water stain to title, paper flaw to outer blank margin of A3 and lower outer corner of 2L4, small ink burn to lower blank margin of A4, last leaf glued at gutter to rear free endpaper. Contemporary vellum, marbled endpapers, title inked to spine, all edges sprinkled red. Extremities a bit soiled, vol. I rebacked in modern vellum. 19th-century armorial bookplate of William Orme Foster. The second edition but the third printing of the Gronovius Livy (the first edition of 1645 had been reprinted in 1653-4). The editions of Livy by J. F. Gronovius (1611-1671) have been considered to "mark an epoch" (Sandys) in the study of that historian. "The text of Livy had never before appeared in so small a space. [...] for purpose of immediate reference, it was surely a desirable acquisition" (Dibdin). This is the last of these editions in Gronovius's lifetime, though his son Jacob, also a classical scholar, would see a further edition through the press in the late 1670s. Americas - Kircher, Athanasius (1602-1680)
1665. Amsterdam, Kircher, [c.1665]. Original copper engraving. Plate Size: 40.2 cm x 34.1 cm. Sheet Size: 37 cm x 39.1 cm. Original Map. Very good condition of an increasingly rare map. Very minor traces of browning to outer margins. [Burden 382, ill. pl. 382, p. 487]. A richly elaborate and highly imaginative map of the Americas - America Septen Trionalis in the north and the southern America Australis - extending from the California peninsula and Mexico all the way down to Terra del Fuego in the south. The western coast of the North American seems increasingly speculative towards the upper corner of the map, while the southern continent appears bulging and does not bear the more elongated form of later maps. The Caribbean islands are also shown with Cuba and Hispaniola labelled. While the map lacks political demarcations, Spanish dominance is nevertheless evident through the regional nomencalture: with Nova Grantia and Nova Spagna above and below the isthmus at Panama. Peru, 'Chilli', Paraquay and Brasilia are also shown on the map. Mexico city is the solitary settlement identified - here shown within the unnamed Lake Texcoco. River, lake, mountain and volcano features are engraved on the map. The Amazon and Plate rivers are also identified. The western tip of Africa can be seen at the map's margin. Three ships are depicted upon the high seas and the map is bisected with the Equator. What makes the map - from Kircher's 'Mundus Subterraneous', first issued in 1665 - all the more fascinating is that it was used to illustrate his unique hydro-geological theories ab … [Click Below for Full Description]

Very minor traces of browning to outer margins. [Burden 382, ill. pl. 382, p. 487]. A richly elaborate and highly imaginative map of the Asia, centering upon an emaciated Indian sub-continent, and including the Arabian peninsula, Persia and Caspian Sea in the west across to China, Cambodia and the Malay peninsula in the east. Off the mainland lie the Philippine and Indonesian archipelagos: Luzon, Mindanao, ‚Celebes' (Sulawesi), Borneo, Java and Sumatra are all identified. Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and the unnamed Maldives are shown off the Indian coast. Farther east, along the Chinese coast are a smaller chain of islands - possibly a speculatively shaped but unidentified Formosa/Taiwan or a misplaced Japan. Apart from an apparently crowded Ceylon - containing settlements like Colombo - only three cities are shown on the map - Manilla and the more mysterious ‚Tolema' and ‚Sancy'. Mountains and rivers, such as the Ganges and the Indus, are depicted pictorially. In the lower left corner of the map is a highly decorative cartouche featuring putti, a potentially amorous Neptune and more reticent companion, and a mermaid who is fixated upon her horn-blowing companion. What makes the map - from Kircher's ‚Mundus Subterraneous', first issued in 1665 - all the more fascinating is that it was used to illustrate his unique hydro-geological theories about the world's ocean currents, tides, volcanic distribution, and core structure of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Giambattista Cavazza (Bologna 1620 - ?)
JONSTON, Johannes
Amsterdam: J. Janssonium et E. Weyerstraet, 1665. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "A compilation of all the contemporary zoological knowledge" (GM 287) John Jonston was a 17th-century Polish scholar who sought to organize and clarify knowledge on all subjects - a truly daunting and unattainable task. In 1632, Johnston first published his most important work 'Thaumatographia Naturalis' - a compilation of scientific studies including astronomy, natural science, archaeology and fossils, biology and plant science, zoology, and most important human anatomy and medicine. It was in these sections on animals and man that Jonston is best remembered - a studied abnormalities and mythological beings such as unicorns and giants! According to Norman, "A treatise on natural wonders, divided into ten categories: the new stars, the elements, meteors, minerals, plants, birds, quadrupeds, insects and other bloodless animals, fish, and men." This work would become the basis and foundation for many of Jonston's other works in his 'Historiae Naturalis' series.

Letter written in Italian by Sabino Mariani (1665-1721) in Rome, Papal ambassador and financial officer of the Apostolic Dataria, to the Priory[?] of the Province[?] of Viterbo at Soriano concerning financial matters. In 1697 Mariani was already making plans to go to China in connection with the Propaganda Fide's efforts there. In 1702 he left for China as part of a diplomatic and missionary expedition, accompanying the papal legate Cardinal Charles Maillard de Tournon (1668-1710), appointed by Pope Clement XI. This embassy was charged with the task of inspecting and reporting on the general state of the missions and to settle the Christian rites controversy regarding the Chinese converts. With some old folds, a small hole in first leaf, slight affecting 2 letters of one word, and some very minor foxing. Athanasius KIRCHER (1601 circa - 1680)
Bell'esemplare." "From Kircher's ""Mundus Subterraneus"". In ""Mundus subterraneus"" Kircher describes a volcanic system that was in the core of the Earth, connected to the surface. This system was connected with a hydrosystem causing the movement of water to and from the surface - hence ocean currents, earthquakes, tides, and more.Kircher, a Jesuit scholar, was one of the first compilers of knowledge of the physical features of the world. Kircher's work is revolutionary and among the first serious scientific studies of this phenomenon. General good … [Click Below for Full Description]

Athanasius KIRCHER
Amsterdam, 1665. Extraordinary map, both form the physical and hydrographic point of view, depicting ocean currents, volcanoes and deep-sea chasms. The map is taken from Kircher’s Mundus Subterraneus . The Jesuit scholar, Athanasius Kircher, was one of the first compilers of semi-scientific knowledge about the physical features of the world. This map expounds on Kircher's theories by noting the abysses and the currents they create as well as the locations of the world's known volcanoes. Between the Mediterranean Sea, the Black Sea, the Caspian Sea, and the Persian Gulf, Kircher theorized massive tunnels and a complex interchange of water flows. These tunnels are noted most particularly between the Black and Caspian Sea and between the Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf. Antarctica is shown along the southern part of the map. In the North a great open northwest passage is depicted running all the way across the map. Shows New Guinea and a suggestion of Australia attached to the 'Australsis Incognita' mainland. Africa is shown with considerably greater accuracy than many maps drawn hundreds of years later – particularly with regard to Nige … [Click Below for Full Description]

___________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________ENGLISH_DESCRIPTION______________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ Contemporary full limp vellum, flat spine with manuscript lettering. 12mo (145x92 mm), (16)-296-(1)-(1 bl.) pages. .

Athanasius KIRCHER (1601 circa - 1680)
Extraordinary map, both form the physical and hydrographic point of view, depicting ocean currents, volcanoes and deep-sea chasms. The map is taken from Kircher's Mundus Subterraneus . Africa is shown with considerably greater accuracy than many maps drawn hundreds of years later - particularly with regard to Niger and Nile … [Click Below for Full Description]

SPENCER, John
London: J. Field; for Will. Graves over against Great S. M, 1665. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. John Spencer was a 17th-century English clergyman who wrote a number of theological treatises including 'Discourse Concerning Prodigies'. This work was one of the most controversial treatises of Spencer's career, as he focused on supernatural phenomena, natural wonders, miracles, and extraordinary events. He comments on things such as monstrous fish, mice invasions, and battles in the sky, and discusses how the belief in prodigies (wondrous omens) is linked to the ancient Chaldeans, Egyptians, Romans, and pre-Christian pagan religions. DU VAL, Pierre.
Paris, 1665. Original outline colour. 365 x 520mm, with a rare letterpress description. A map of Algeria engraved by François Lépine (Lapointe) published as France was taking action against the Barbary Pirates based in Algiers, aided by England. After the pirates had attacked the coast of Provence Louis XIV ordered the Duke of Beaufort to capture the port of Djidjelli and create a European fortress to threaten Algiers. The duke took Djidjelli in July 1664 but had to withdraw in October because an outbreak of plague in Toulon left him without new supplies and reinforcements. Naval action continued: in August 1665 Beaufort captured a corsair ship that had been fitted with the guns he had left behind at Djidjelli. The text sheet, although primarily geographical in purpose, includes a paragraph on the expedition to 'Gigeri'.
