Kircher, Athanasius
1665. Early map of Africa extending from the Congo south to the Cape of Good Hope and including the Island of Madagascar. The map is based on an account; 'the fountains of Abyssinia' from a journal left by Peter Paez. On the 21st April in the year 1618, being there with the King and his army, I ascended the place and observed everything with great attention: I discovered first two round fountain each bout four palms in diameter, and saw with the greatest delight what neither Cyrus, the King of the Persians, or Cambysis, nor Alexander the Great, nor the famous Julius Caesar could ever discover. The two openings of these fountains have no issue in the plain on top of the mountain but flow from the root of it. The second fountain lies about a stone-cast west from the first: the inhabitants say that this whole mountain is full of water and add that the whole plain about the fountain is floating and unsteady, a certain mark that there is water concealed under it. Kircher's description of the cavern is clearly shown above and it is named on the map as, 'Hydrophylacium Africae precipuum in Montibus Lunae'. He also includes the river, 'Rio del Spirito Santo', coursing parallel to the lower border of the cavern and entering the sea to place referred to as a place of gold. Kircher's maps were among the first thematic maps to attempt to scientifically illustrate and explain global geological and oceanographic phenomena. BOSSE (Abraham)
(Cat. A. Dinaux, 217) - Brunet I, 1127.

Lievin CRUYL
Roma. Opera molto rara e ricercata. Magnifico esemplare della tiratura di Carlo Losi. Etching with engraving, 1665. A fine impression, with plate tone, of the third state of three, printed on 2 sheets of contemporary laid paper, full margins, very good condition. This map was published for the first time in 1665 by De Rossi; it is one of the rare images of the city depicting, at the same time, an iconographic and perspective system. The views are the same that the Flemish artist engraved afterwards as a sort of personal catalogue. The first state has been printed by Giovanni Battista De Rossi in 1665. The plate was then published by Matteo Gregorio de Rossi in 1696 and finally reissued by Carlo Losi, in 1773. It has been engraved by Giulio Testone on two copper plates. FRANZ, Wolfgang
Amstelaedami: Joannem Ravesteinium, 1665. 1665 Animalium Historia Existence of UNICORNS & Dragons Angels Demons Monsters Wolfgang Franz was a German Lutheran theologian from the 16th-century who, curiously, composed a zoological treatise on the history of animals at the end of his career. Franz was known for his disputations and theological treatises and this book, on animals no less, is right in line with his important works of theology. 'Animalium Historia Sacra' was one of Franz's final published works in which he targeted theological students and priests with his discussions. The purpose of this book was to provide accurate information to preachers who sought to use parallels of wildlife and animals in their sermons. Instead of discussing the physical attributes of animals, Franz teaches on the moral, aesthetic, and miraculous qualities of animals. One of the most fascinating aspects of this book is Franz's commentary on mythical creatures, specifically, his insistence that the unicorn (monocerote) is a regularly occurring animal in nature. He supports his claims through scriptural references to what he considers to be the Bible's description of a unicorn. Other mythical creatures mentioned include: · Angels· Demons· Behemoth· Leviathan· Sphinx· Phoenix· Griffin· Harpy· Sirens (Mermaids)· Dragons· Basilisk· Hippocampus· and other examples of various monstersItem number: #7977Price: $750FRANZ, WolfgangHistoria animalium, in quà plerorumque animalium praecipuae proprietates in gratiam studiosor … [Click Below for Full Description]

SALNOVE, Robert de
1665. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Robert de Salnove was a relatively minor author during the 17th-century; mostly due to the fact that he is only known to have published one major work. Salnove grew up fascinated with French royalty and published a book in their honor entitled 'The Royal Vault'. This work was a hunting treatise that made him famous during his lifetime. It covered hunting regulations, placement of cabins, hunting trips, and how to plan and execute a hunt. This work also covers the use of all types and breeds hunting dogs. The final grouping of pages contain the 'dictionary of hunters'. [Attributes: First Edition]

BLAEU, Willem Janszoon.
Amsterdam, 1665, Dutch text edition. Original colour with gold highlights. 375 x 480mm. A very fine example. Early map of the islands of Ternate, Timor, Tidore and Makian, off the coast of Halmahera, orientated with north to the right with an insert map of the Dutch East India Company's trading post on Bachian Island. This chain was a focal point of the VOC's lucrative spice trade. Despite Blaeu's name on the plate, this map was engraved by Jodocus Hondius II (son of the engraver of Speed's county atlas). When Jodocus died in 1629 many of his plates were sold to Willem Blaeu, who added his name to the plates and used them to publish his first atlas in 1630. Angered by the sale, Hondius's brother-in-law Jansson had these plates slavishly copied for the family atlas. KOEMAN: Bl 57. [Attributes: First Edition]

An important map of South East Asia, showing India and Japan in the north, and New Guinea and partial sections of the coast of Australia in the south, with cartouches for the title, dedication and scale. The dedication is to Dr. Laurens Real, Governor-General of the VOC (Dutch East India Company) in Batavia 1615-1619, who introduced slave labour into the nutmeg plantations on Amboina. As the official cartographer to the VOC Blaeu had access to the most up-to-date information, although he is known to have supressed knowledge of Australia for thirty years. Amsterdam, 1665, Dutch text edition. Original colour with gold highlights. 420 x 535mm. A superb example The very first issue of this fine map of Arabia which, due to the lack of new information, still depicts the peninsula divided into the three Roman Provinces, using the Ptolemaic names: ' Arabia Felix', 'Arabia Petraea' and 'Arabia Deserta'. 'Arabia Felix', Latin for 'Loyal Arabia' covers the majority of the Peninsula, even though the term relates to the comparatively fertile regions of present day Asir and Yemen. 'Arabia Petraea' (Stony Arabia) is located in North West Arabia and was a frontier province of imperial Rome. 'Arabia Deserta' refers to the desert interior, which was populated by nomadic tribes who frequently invaded richer lands, of which the cartographic detail is mostly imaginary. Extremely RARE 17th Century OXFORD EDITION England Gazette 1665 Old Newspaper (Note: additional images are located below the description) Offered is an original, historic, & collectible old newspaper: THE OXFORD GAZETTE, England, Dec. 18, 1665 * Earliest & Rarest of newspapers to be had This is an extremely famous--and rare--title, being the predecessor of the famous "London Gazette", the oldest continually published English language newspaper in the world. Plus this is the #10 issue. Because of the Plague at this time, the Royal Court had removed itself from London to Oxford when this newspaper began, so issues #1 thru #23 were published simultaneously in Oxford & London and when the contagion had subsided & the Court returned to London this newspaper went with it and renamed itself "The London Gazette" with issue #24, and the rest is history. The content is entirely taken up with reports from various parts of Europe, most with a military theme. The bottom of the back page has a notable report concerning the King decided to remain in Oxford a bit longer due to the Plague: "Though we may well believe that the conveniency of His Majesties affaires, as well as his own inclination sufficiently invite his return to London, so soon as possibly the health of that City can permit it; yet to favour the totall abatement of the Sickness there (which by Gods mercy we hope for in few weeks) His Majesty hath declared He will keep His Christmas here with the usuall ceremonies that attend that fesstival, and the beginning of the New Year." KIRCHER ATHANASIUS
Amsterdam, 1665. Copper engraving, mm 365x495, coloured by hand, from "Mundus Subterraneus". Important map by Athanasius Kircher showing 3 maps on a single sheet, providing information on the various theories of the source of the Nile River. The first map shows the observations between 1578 and 1584 by the Portuguese explorer Duarte Lopes. The second map shows Arab cartographic sources. The last (with south at the top) shows the information derived from HistÛria da EthiÛpia by the Spanish Jesuit missionary Pedro Paez, between 1618 and 1621, which would not be published in a printed edition until 1905-1917. Paez is credited with the discovery of the source of the Blue Nile River in the mountains of Ethiopia (Lake Tana) and reported that there were two "fountains" there. From "Mundus Subterraneus", one of the most important works by Kircher, where he writes about a volcanic system that was in the core of the earth, connected to the surface. This system was connected with a hydrosystem causing the movement of water to and from the surface - hence ocean currents, earthquakes, tides, and more.Kircher, a Jesuit scholar, was one of the first compilers of knowledge of the physical features of the world. Kircher's work is revolutionary and among the first serious scientific studies of this phenomenon. General good condition, little portion of left bottom margin added. The map is quite rare on the market. AMPR lists two copies offered in 1985 and 1994.Incisione in rame, mm 365x495Una delle pi? significative e vibranti tavole di Athanasius Kircher, ecclettico erudito e scienziato tede … [Click Below for Full Description]
