KIRCHER, Athanasius
Engraved frontis., woodcut device on title, 6 engraved plates (five folding), two large folding printed genealogical tables, & 5 engravings (one full-page) in the text. 6 p.l. (incl. frontis.), 184, [10] pp., one leaf of errata. 4to, cont. vellum over boards (some foxing as is always the case with this book). Rome: Varese, 1665. First edition of one of Kircher's scarcest books. In 1661, Kircher "retired to Tybur to restore his waning strength and to gather geographic and historical information for his Latium. Setting out through the neighboring hills one day, he came upon an ancient church. An inscription near the crumbling altar declared that the shrine was erected by Constantine where Saint Eustachius saw a vision of the crucified Christ between a stag's antlers and was converted. Saint Eustachius is alleged to have been a Roman general of the first century A.D., who, after being thus converted while hunting, refused to sacrifice to pagan gods during the persecutions under Hadrian in A.D. 118. He was subsequently burned inside a brazen bull... "Naturally this discovery piqued Kircher's curiosity, and upon inquiring of the local peasants, he learned that the chapel had been called the Shrine of Our Lady of Mentorella and was a well-known place of pilgrimage in antiquity. Kircher remembered the many perils he had escaped with the Virgin's aid and was determined to restore the shrine to her honor. When he returned to Rome, he wrote...Historia eustachio-mariana (1665), on the history and sanctity of the shrine and sent copies to his patrons. Soon donations beg … [Click Below for Full Description]

SCHWANN, Theodor.
An exceptionally fine copy of the foundation work of the cell theory for plants and animals, and one of the classic titles in the history of biology. "The cell theory ranks with the evolution theory in the far-reaching influence it has exerted on the growth of modern biology." (Evans, <i>First editions of Epochal Achievements in the History of Science</i>, p. 44). This work "was a keystone of modern biology and, with its advent, the biological sciences began a period of rapid ascendancy" (<i>Heirs of Hippocrates</i>).<br/><br/> ❧Dibner 197, Evans 106; PMM 307b, Horblit 93a; Sparrow/Milestones 178; Grolier/Medicine 62; Meyer Friedman Sale 159.<br/><br/> "In 1665 Robert Hooke, in his <i>Micrographia</i>, observed the cellular nature of plant construction and coined the word 'cell.' Nehemiah Grew and Marcello Malpighi in the following decade also observed the cellular construction of parts of plants and formulated a rough hypothesis of a cellular theory of plant life. In 1831 Robert Brown described the nucleus as the essential characteristic of the plant cell, and in 1838 Matthias Schleiden, in his own study of vegetable cells, became the first to construct a theory of cell formation and to present the concept that a living body-in this case a plant-was made up of an aggregate of cells and cell products. After Schleiden pointed out to Theodor Schwann the importance of the nucleus in the development of plant cells, Schwann demonstrated the existence of cellular structures in animal tissue. At this point Schwann discarded Schleiden's erroneous <i>Uhrglastheorie</i> of cel … [Click Below for Full Description]

RAMPALLE (Jean Antoine)], RONPHYLE (pseudo. de)
Paris, Jean-Baptiste Loyson, 1665. (Caillet, 9577. Dorbon, 4223). Bon exemplaire.

MILTON, JOHN
London: by J.M. for John Starkey. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE of Paradise Regained, with the first edition of Samson Agonistes (as issued); in beautiful Riviere and Son binding. "In August 1665 Milton had shown the unpublished manuscript of Paradise Lost to Thomas Ellwood, who read it and told Milton that 'thou hast said much here of Paradise Lost, but what hast thou to say of Paradise Found?' (Masson, 6.496). In the following year Ellwood visited Milton in London, and Milton showed him the manuscript of Paradise Regained, graciously telling Ellwood that 'this is owing to you; for you put it into my head by the question you put to me at Chalfont' (ibid., 6.654). It is possible that Paradise Regained, which depicts the temptations of Jesus in the desert, owes its pacific tone to the influence of the values of the Quaker community at Chalfont St Giles. The Jesus of Paradise Regained is not a warrior like the Son in book 6 of Paradise Lost, but rather a man who outwits his opponent…" (Dictionary of National Biography). This first edition of Paradise Regained includes the first edition of Milton's classic tragic drama Samson Agonistes, as issued. First issue: With "loah" for "loth" on F2 (p. 67). Complete with license leaf and errata. London: by J.M. for John Starkey, 1671. Octavo (173x106mm), nineteenth century full crimson crushed morocco by Riviere and Son with elaborate gilt tooling on boards; rebacked with original spine laid down. SCHOOCK, MARTIN.
Amsterdam, P. van den Berge, 1665. 12:o. Extra grav. titelblad,(10),426 s.

GOOS, Pieter
Amsterdam, 1665. unbound. Map. Uncolored copperplate engraving. Image measures 17.5 x 21.5". This sea chart depicts the British Isles with North oriented to the right. The map extends to include the English Chanel and coastline of Normandy. In addition to ports, the index also includes soundings, sand bars, fishing banks and navigational hazards. Each region is adorned with a decorative coat of arms, and embellished compass roses appear at the top and bottom of the map. This map was published in Goos' "De Zee-Atlas Ofte Water-Weereld" and remains in its original uncolored state, which allows Goos' intricate line work to shine. It is in good condition with slight foxing, soiling, and off-setting. Pieter Goos (1616-1675) was a Dutch cartographer, engraver, publisher, printer, and print-seller based in Amsterdam. He belonged to a noted family of cartographers, headed by his father Abraham, who prepared plates for many maps published in the important atlases of the time. His pilot guide, the "Zee-Spiegel," provided some of the first charts of newly explored regions in the West Indies and Western Africa, and his "Zee-Atlas" is considered one of the best sea atlases of its time. This map is a fine example of Goos' high quality, visually appealing sea charts.

Trans. by James Duport. Title within typographical border. 18 p.l., 126 pp., 1 blank leaf. Large 12mo, cont. panelled calf. Cambridge: [1665]. [bound with as usual]:PSALMS in Greek: Psalterion toy Dabid, kata tous Hebdomekonta, Eis ta tmemata, ta en te tes Anglikanes Ekklesias leitourgia nomizomena, dieremeion. First edition of Duport's translation into Greek of the Book of Common Prayer, one of five Prayer Books listed by Harrison in The Library of Isaac Newton, and a tangible link with a crucial episode in Newton's career. Before his installation as dean of Peterborough in July of 1664, one of Duport's last acts as vice-master of Trinity College, Cambridge, was to elect Newton to a scholarship. The election is not without its mysteries, since Newton had not shone in the University's ordinary subjects and he was without powerful connections. But the election was momentous: "with his election, Newton ceased to be a sizar. He now received commons from the college, a livery allowance...and a stipend...Far more important, he received the assurance of at least four more years of unconstrained study...He could abandon himself completely to the studies he had found. The capacity Newton had shown as a schoolboy for ecstasy, total surrender to a commanding interest, now found in his early manhood its mature intellectual manifestation."-Westfall, Never at Rest. RICCIOLI, G.B
Bologna : Heirs of Vittorio Benacci , 1665. Scarce first edition of Riccioli's anti-Copernican, Tychonic geo-centrist cosmology, presenting an astronomy reformed, so he claims, of theoretical as well as observational errors, and considered a conclusion to the Almagestum novum of 1651. As the Jesuits' leading astronomer, his observational and experimental achievements offered significant refinements of Galilean quantitative experimental procedures in terms of accuracy, and although intended to refute Galileo, his results often unwittingly confirmed them.

Martini, Martin [Martino]
The rare first Spanish edition of Martini?s famed History of China. 1665. Madrid. Joseph Fernandez de Buenca. In 8vo (137 mm x 90 mm). 20 ff. + 188. Eighteenth century calf, spine gilt with floral tooling and red morocco lettering piece, gently rubbed, upper compartment restored. Upper margin a little short, paper browned as always for Spanish 17th century paper, ex libris removed from verso of title page causing foxing and creasing, ff. 51 with paper loss just touching one letter, a few foxing spots but overall very good. First edition. This Spanish translation was prepared by Estevan de Aguilar y Zuñiga. Martini (1614 - 1661) was a remarkable Italian Jesuit, cartographer and traveller; he is known for his history of China and his cartographic renderings of the country; the latter so important, that eventually were published as one of the volumes of Blaeu?s monumental "Atlas Nuevo de la extrema Asia, o descripcion geographica del Imperio de las Chinas", published in 1658. Martini sailed to China in 1640, making port in Macau in 1642, where he stayed for over 10 years ?studying the cartography, language and history of China, and becoming the superior of the mission at Hang-Tcheou; after that he parted back to Europe to work on his atlas. After a few years he made his way back to China until his death. His fame and the respect gained were partially due to his use of the Chinese cartography available at the time, thus not only relying on European maps but on local maps as well. Death would find him in China in 1661. Even today, in China, he is arguably the most regarded missi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Boccaccio Giovanni
(Elzeviri), (Amsterdam), 1665.
