GLANVILL, Joseph
London: Printed by E. Cotes, for Henry Eversden, 1665.. Sole edition, 8vo, (xxx), 184, (16), 92, (4) pp, lacking the half title, and with two leaves of the preliminaries (imprimatur and advertisement) bound at the end. Engraved coat of arms of the Royal Society, title and subsequent leaf with some chipping to the edges, the latter with some staining, mostly mild marginal browning throughout. Contemporary sheep with blind stamped rules, neatly rebacked. A reply to Thomas White's "An Exclusion of Sceptics from All Title to Dispute", published the same year, which was itself a reply to Glanvill's own "The Vanity of Dogmatizing" (1661, of which this title is a reworking). The book was presented to the Royal Society in December 1664 and Glanvill was elected a member the following week. A Church of England clergyman who had rejected his own family's Puritan beliefs, Glanvill contributed some minor researches to the Society and published widely on science, witchcraft and religion, sparking some lively exchanges of pamphlets, including one with a Puritan minister, Robert Crosse, which led to Crosse composing "...anti-Glanvill ballads to be sung in alehouses" (ODNB). Wing G827, G828.

Basel-Johannis Buxtorfi. Book. A scarce 1665 edition of Johannes Buxtorf's Tiberias Sive Commentarius edited by his son, Johannes Buxtorf. Rebound in card. Scarce. Last seen at auction in 1977 in poor condition and there sold for $100. Thistext is written in Latin and Hebrew. Rebound by a previous owner, with their ink inscription on the front pastedown. With an informative ink inscription on the front free-endpaper, 'This work contains a learned exposition and defence of the Masoretic doctrines; and was mostlearnedly assailed in the Arcanum Punctuations of Capel. '-Orme's Bibl. Biblica, p. 70. Johannes Buxtorf, 1564 1629, was a celebrated Hebraist, member of a family of Orientalists; professor of Hebrew for thirty-nine years at Basel and was known by the title, Master of the Rabbis. His massive tome, De Synagoga Judaica, scrupulously documents the customs and society of German Jewry in the early modern period. Buxtorf studied under Heinrich Bullinger at Zrich, and Theodore Beza at Geneva. Tiberias, sive Commentarius, first published in 1620, was improved and enlarged by J. Buxtorf the younger in 1665. It is named from the great school of Jewish criticism which had its seat in the town of Tiberias. It was in this work that Buxtorf controverted the views of Elias Levita regarding the late origin of the Hebrew vowel points, a subject which gave rise to the controversy between Louis Cappel and his son Johannes Buxtorf II. Johannes Buxtorf the Younger, 1599 1664, was son of the scholar Johannes Buxtorf, and a Protestant Christian Hebraist. Before the age of thirteen he matricul … [Click Below for Full Description]

London, under S Dunstan's Church in Fleet-street.: Tho. Bassett, 1665 VG, 1st ed, 1665, 11 illustrations within text. In modern quarter calf with cloth, occasional spot. Spine, raised bands, some blind tooling, black stamped titles. Internally, imprimatur leaf (with the tipped in engraving of Stone Heng), [8], 92, 97-232 pp, 11 numbered engravings within text, as issued, lacks the final errata leaf, title page in red & black within double ruled borders, pagination skips from 92 to 97 (printers error present in all copies), no loss of text catchword or text, its continuous, new endpapers, text block edges sprinkled red, minimal scattered foxing, edge wear & soiled pages, faint ink name at head of tp (1715). (ESTC R12913. Wing 1203. Allibone 2621). Webb was a British architect & student of Inigo Jones (1573-1652). Jones theory was that Stonehenge was built as a Roman temple, open to the sky & dedicated to the god Coelus. In 1663 Dr Walter Charleton in his Chorea Gigantum, attributed Stonehenge to the Danes. Webb countered with the current work which is both a rebuttal of Charleton & an invaluable account of his life, character and work of (as Webb put it) The Vitruvius of his age. See ODNB. Title continues: in which the orders and rules of architecture observed by the ancient Romans, are discussed. Together with the customs and manners of several nations of the world in matters of building of greatest antiquity. As also an historical narration of the most memorable actions of the Danes in England.

Foot of spine chipped, extremities rubbed, small hole in pages 275 and 801 touching one letter, quire Rrr and a few other leaves browned, an exceptionally handsome copy. From the library of Edward Hyde, Earl of Clarendon, Lord Chancellor and chronicler of the English Civil War; a superbly apposite association, in a handsome binding from the Mearne workshop which was responsible for the most splendid gold-tooled bindings produced during the reign of Charles II. Clarendon's arms do not appear to have been part of the original binding design and they were probably added sometime before December 1667, when he went into exile for the second time. The book was presumably intended for the newly completed Clarendon House, which had what John Evelyn called "a very ample library" (reputedly numbering some 6,350 volumes). Baker's Chronicle was first published in … [Click Below for Full Description]
