David Lloyd
London: J.C. for Samuel Speed, 1665. See pictures. Rub at top of front board. A little color loss at joints. .5 cm rub at top of spine. Turn-ins have ghosted onto flyleaf. 3 bookplates on front endpaper. Numerous graphite pencil bookseller notes on flyleaf and 1st blank unpaginated page. If you look deep down into the hinge it appears the endpapers have cracked. 1st blank unpaginated page has remains of paper advertisement where it was pasted in (ad present but loose now). Throughout some thumbing, yellowing, and occasional fox spot (singular, pages are not foxed but there is a spot here and there). 1st 15 leaves have hint of moisture mark at very bottom edge. Title page has Cotton and daughter's name written on it, as well as a graphite bookseller note, "311/34". Page 719 has dog-ear (fold) at bottom right corner. Frontis is possibly a later addition, as I've found another copy with a different frontis. Charles Cotton's copy of David Lloyd's States-men and Favourites of England Since the Reformation, finely bound and hand-tooled by Stikeman. Auction records trace the work back to the late 1800s. Provenance - Charles Cotton's autograph (and "Olivia", his daughter) on the title page. Cotton contributed twelve chapters to The Compleat Angler, and was a friend of the author Izaak Walton; Cotton is also known for translating the works of Montaigne and his burlesque poems. He likely authored The Compleat Gamester. This book was sold in 1898 at the auction of Edward Snow's books (Lot 258) and listed in the printed catalogue "Catalogue of the Valuable and Extensive Library of B … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cotton contributed twelve chapters to The Compleat Angler, and was a friend of the author Izaak Walton; Cotton is also known for translating the works of Montaigne and his burlesque poems. He likely authored The Compleat Gamester. This book was sold in 1898 at the auction of Edward Snow's books (Lot 258) and listed in the printed catalogue "Catalogue of the Valuable and Extensive Library of Books on Angling, The Property of the Late Edward Snow". A copy of this catalogue, with handwritten notes by Daniel B. Fearing (a Grolier club member) lists "Maurice" as the buyer. A funny manuscript note in Fearing's catalogue states, "Mr. Snow's name was Edwin, not Edward. He was a liquor dealer in Boston." Stikeman Fine Binding - In the 1898 catalogue the binding is listed as "old calf". The book appears again in 1909, at the sale of the Library of the Late John Gerard Heckscher. The catalogue now notes the Stikeman binding (Lot 514). Described as, "full crushed brown levant morocco, gilt back, delicate vine tooling on covers, with crown in center, gilt inside borders gilt leaves, by Stikeman." There are other ex-libris Heckscher books with Stikeman bindings leading me to conclude Hckscher commissioned the binding circa 1898. Also, it is thought Stikeman only used hand … [Click Below for Full Description]

LACHAMBRE (Marin Cureau de).
Parisiis, Apud P. Rocolet Typographum Regium in Palatio, 1665. 3 parties en 1 volume in-8. 14ff. 158pp. 71pp. (i.e. 69) 3ff. 43pp. 1f. Bon exemplaire. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

John Bill and Christopher Barker
United Kingdom: John Bill and Christopher Barker. This Interleaved 2 volume Bible dating from 1665 has been rebound in the last 100 years. It is in reasonable condition. Part of its attraction is that, being interleaved, it has clergymen's notes appended to the interleaved blank pages. The British Museum wanted it gifted to them some 50 years ago. This Interleaved Bible in two volumes was published by John Bill and Christopher Barker in 1665. It is thought that it lay on their shelves until about 1770 when an interested clergyman purchased it and had it bound in two volumes. They were left to a Rev W Richardson who I believe was a clergyman in Frampton-on Severn (UK). His executor, a Rev Joseph Hyatt acquired it and, on 16th April 1848, he gave it to my Great Great Grandfather and it has then passed down my family. We have family Bibles already and my late Father was interested in selling it in the 1950s. He showed it to the British Museum who did not know such a Bible existed and asked if he would give it to them. He declined to do so. I am about to downsize to a smaller property so now is a good time to part with it as well as Books of Common Prayer dated 1580, 1582 and 1700 which the Family has owned for many years. These Books of Common Prayer are included in this ebay auction lot. The last 6 photos added recently are of the 1580, 1582 and 1700 Books of Common Prayer. In an effort to attract a suitable buyer, who will treasure these books, I have today (19 May 2019) reduced the price substantially.

Esemplari in ottimo stato di conservazione. Marco Fabio Quintiliano ( 30 - 40 d. [Click Below for Full Description]

*** [English translation available upon request. Joseph Fernández, Madrid, 1665. [38] (of [40]), 188 pages; lacks preliminary 2¶1. Duodecimo (5 3/4" x 3 3/4") bound in nineteenth-century gilt and blind-stamped sheep with decorative edges. Translated from the Latin by Esteban de Aguilar y Zúñiga. (Lust 445; Palau 156356; Streit V, 2321) First Spanish edition, originally published in Latin (1654). Martino Martini was an Italian Jesuit missionary, cartographer and historian, mainly working on ancient Imperial China. He set out for China in 1640, and arrived in Portuguese Macau in 1642 where he studied Chinese for some time. In 1643 he crossed the border and settled in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, from where he did much traveling in order to gather scientific information, especially on the geography of the Chinese empire: he visited several provinces, as well as Peking and the Great Wall. He made great use of his talents as missionary, scholar, writer and superior. Soon after Martini's arrival to China, the Ming capital Beijing fell to Li Zicheng's rebels (April, 1644) and then to the Manchus, and the last legitimate Ming emperor, the Chongzhen Emperor, hanged himself. Down in Zhenjiang, Martini continued working with the short-lived regime of Zhu Yujian, Prince of Tang, who set himself up as the (Southern) Ming Longwu Emperor. In 1651 Martini left China for Rome as the Delegate of the Chinese Mission Superior. On his way to Rome, he met printers in Antwerp, Vienna and Munich to submit to them historical and cartographic data he had prepared. The works were printed and made him famous. In 1658, after a most difficult jour … [Click Below for Full Description]

Alexandro Donato
Rome, Ex officina philippi Rubei 1665. Un volume in-4°(25x18,5cm). Reliure de l'époque plein vélin. Etiquette de titre au dos. X+537+17p d'index.
