Athanasius KIRCHER (1601 circa - 1680)
Extraordinary map, both form the physical and hydrographic point of view, depicting ocean currents, volcanoes and deep-sea chasms. The map is taken from Kircher's Mundus Subterraneus . The Jesuit scholar, Athanasius Kircher, was one of the first compilers of semi-scientific knowledge about the physical features of the world. This map expounds on Kircher's theories by noting the abysses and the currents they create as well as the locations of the world's known volcanoes. Between the Mediterranean Sea, the Black Sea, the Caspian Sea, and the Persian Gulf, Kircher theorized massive tunnels and a complex interchange of water flows. These tunnels are noted most particularly between the Black and Caspian Sea and between the Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf. Antarctica is shown along the southern part of the map. In the North a great open northwest passage is depicted running all the way across the map. Shows New Guinea and a suggestion of Australia attached to the 'Australsis Incognita' mainland. Africa is shown with considerably greater accuracy than many maps drawn hundreds of years later - particularly with regard to Niger and Nile … [Click Below for Full Description]

SPENCER, John
London: J. Field; for Will. Graves over against Great S. M, 1665. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. John Spencer was a 17th-century English clergyman who wrote a number of theological treatises including 'Discourse Concerning Prodigies'. This work was one of the most controversial treatises of Spencer's career, as he focused on supernatural phenomena, natural wonders, miracles, and extraordinary events. He comments on things such as monstrous fish, mice invasions, and battles in the sky, and discusses how the belief in prodigies (wondrous omens) is linked to the ancient Chaldeans, Egyptians, Romans, and pre-Christian pagan religions. (Burns).

DU VAL, Pierre.
Paris, 1665. Original outline colour. 365 x 520mm, with a rare letterpress description. A map of Algeria engraved by François Lépine (Lapointe) published as France was taking action against the Barbary Pirates based in Algiers, aided by England. After the pirates had attacked the coast of Provence Louis XIV ordered the Duke of Beaufort to capture the port of Djidjelli and create a European fortress to threaten Algiers. The duke took Djidjelli in July 1664 but had to withdraw in October because an outbreak of plague in Toulon left him without new supplies and reinforcements. Naval action continued: in August 1665 Beaufort captured a corsair ship that had been fitted with the guns he had left behind at Djidjelli. The text sheet, although primarily geographical in purpose, includes a paragraph on the expedition to 'Gigeri'.

Bell'esemplare." "From Kircher's ""Mundus Subterraneus"". In ""Mundus subterraneus"" Kircher describes a volcanic system that was in the core of the Earth, connected to the surface. This system was connected with a hydrosystem causing the movement of water to and from the surface - hence ocean currents, earthquakes, tides, and more.Kircher, a Jesuit scholar, was one of the first compilers of knowledge of the physical features of the world. Kircher's work is revolutionary and among the first serious scientific studies of this phenomenon. G … [Click Below for Full Description]

*** [English translation available upon request. 1665 Original antique engraved map titled THE KINGDOME OF ENGLAND A fine exle of the very rare Roger Rea issue of the John Speed Map of England. At the bottom right Sudbury and Humble's names have been removed from the imprint which now reads 'are to be solde by Roger Rea the Elder and younger at the Golden Crosse in Cornhill against the Exchange'. The Reas had purchased the rights to Speed's work from William Garrett in 1589, who had previously purchased them from the widow of William Humble in the same year. Skelton suggest that the father and son intended a new edition of the Atlas fro the Restoration in 1660, However the atlas would appear not to have been published until 1665. This one and only edition led to rarity of the Rea edition of the atlas. Rea would later sell the plates to Bassett and Chiswell, who would publish a new edition in 1676. Lovely early hand colouring. Condition Generally in excellent condition with a few minor re-enforcements on the reverse. The outer margins are tight, but once mounted and framed, will look outstanding. Central fold as issued. Overall size including margins 51cm x 39cm. All our items are original Antiques and as described. We never sell modern reproductions

Zahn Johannes
Artist: Zahn Johannes ; issued in: Nuremberg; date: ca, 1665. technic: Copper print; colorit: original colored; - condition: Perfect condition; size (in cm): 35,5,x 42; - description: Striking map, both form the physical and hydrographic point of view, depicting ocean currents, volcanoes and deep-sea chasms. The map is taken from Kircher s Mundus Subterraneus . Africa is shown with considerably greater accuracy than many maps drawn hundreds of years later particularly with regard to Niger and Nile River Systems. North America and South America are both wildly malformed, indicating a relatively sketchy knowledge of the continent. Korea is shown as an Island and Japan appears as only a single island.

Kircher, Athanasius
1665. Early map of Africa extending from the Congo south to the Cape of Good Hope and including the Island of Madagascar. The map is based on an account; 'the fountains of Abyssinia' from a journal left by Peter Paez. On the 21st April in the year 1618, being there with the King and his army, I ascended the place and observed everything with great attention: I discovered first two round fountain each bout four palms in diameter, and saw with the greatest delight what neither Cyrus, the King of the Persians, or Cambysis, nor Alexander the Great, nor the famous Julius Caesar could ever discover. The two openings of these fountains have no issue in the plain on top of the mountain but flow from the root of it. The second fountain lies about a stone-cast west from the first: the inhabitants say that this whole mountain is full of water and add that the whole plain about the fountain is floating and unsteady, a certain mark that there is water concealed under it. Kircher's description of the cavern is clearly shown above and it is named on the map as, 'Hydrophylacium Africae precipuum in Montibus Lunae'. He also includes the river, 'Rio del Spirito Santo', coursing parallel to the lower border of the cavern and entering the sea to place referred to as a place of gold. Kircher's maps were among the first thematic maps to attempt to scientifically illustrate and explain global geological and oceanographic phenomena. BOSSE (Abraham)
(Cat. A. Dinaux, 217) - Brunet I, 1127.
