RAPIN, R.
- Paris, Typographia Regia, 1665. 4to. (266 x 198 mm). pp. (xxvi including frontispiece), 219 with engraved frontispiece, engraved vignette with royal arms on title, nine engraved head- and tailpieces, and six engraved initials; a fine, large copy, ruled in red throughout, in contemporary calf, gilt floral panels with centre and corner pieces on sides, gilt spine, upper joint slightly cracked. First edition of Rapin's celebrated poem on gardens, and a fine piece of book design. René Rapin (1621-1687), a Jesuit, wrote this work in imitation of Virgil's 'Georgics'. It is divided into four books, on the flower garden, parkland and trees, water, and the orchard. It is followed by a work in prose, a debate between the 'ancients' and 'moderns' on gardening styles, in which Rapin endorses the 'modern' style. This work enjoyed immense renown, and was translated into English by John Evelyn."On the threshold of this period the French garden found its earliest poets. René Rapin, the learned Jesuit who wrote so many books, published in 1665 a poem called 'Hortorum libri quattuor'. This was in undisguised imitation of Virgil's 'Georgics', but aimed at giving a supplement on the province of the garden, which the Roman poet had neglected. Rapin had already seen something of the development of gardens in the grand siècle, and this appears in much of what he wrote; but he chiefly concerns himself with the gardens of the time of Maria de Medici and Henry IV. All that he writes in his first book, 'The flower garden', is what is demanded by the usual theorists; and about flowers he only gives … [Click Below for Full Description]

WALTON, IZAAK
London: Rich. Marriott, 1665. First Edition of this biography collected later in Walton’s Lives. Bound in 18th century full morocco; all edges gilt with marbled endpapers; some page spotting; small leather bookplate; some rubbing, especially at the outer joints; overall very good. Presentation copy, with annotations in the author’s hand, inscribed on the Imprimatur leaf, “For My Sister Beacham. Iz: Wa.” The recipient was actually his wife’s sister, his sister-in-law. There are corrections in Walton’s hand on four pages. With the ownership signature on the title page of Ralph Widdrington, a Greek scholar at Cambridge University. Additionally, a tiny ink note on the recto of the rear free endpaper by one J. Clarke in 1855 indicates that this was purchased a year earlier at the Pickering Sale (”no. 2012”). While Walton presentations are not unknown, they are exceptionally scarce.

Church of England. Book of Common Prayer. Greek. 1665.

Greek. 1665. Tes kaines diathekes apanta. 12mo. [2], 419, [1], pp. First edition of this Greek translation of the Book of Common Prayer. The preface is signed "I.D.," i.e., James Duport, a popular professor of Greek at the University of Cambridge, who had the year before printed a translation of the Psalter (which appears here with the BCP as issued, under a separate title-page) and Ordinal, along with the Greek New Testament and Apocrypha (the title-page of the New Testament being an insert, and the Apocrypha having separate pagination). This is only the second translation of the BCP into Greek, following the first by Elias Petley in 1638. There were apparently two settings of this edition produced by printer John Field in the same year, under the same title and imprint, with priority not established; the present example has line six of the main title-page all in capital letters, and the "Alma mater Cantabrigia" device following the last page of the Psalter -- but while the sun is on the left and the cup on the right of the Psalter title-page device, they are reversed on the New Testament title-page, apparently indicating that the New Testament is from a variant post-dating the BCP and Psalter. Boccaccio Giovanni
(Elzeviri), 1665.

KIRCHER ATHANASIUS.
1665. Incisione in rame, 346x415.
