Downing, George
[Oxford?], 1665. 1 vols. 2 1/2 x 13 5/8 inches. Receipt for John Wolstenholme, John Jacob Nitho and John Shaw, John Harrison is mentioned, stitchmarks, some light soiling. 1 vols. 2 1/2 x 13 5/8 inches. Downing Street's Namesake & the Second Graduate of Harvard. One of Harvard's earliest graduates, Downing is best known for his involvement in taking New York from the Dutch. He served Cromwell as foreign minister, quite successfully. In 1655 he was sent to France to convey Cromwell's unhappiness with Louis XIV and his famous meeting with Mazarin took place then. In 1657 he was selected Minister to Holland and served as Cromwell's spy keeping a close eye on Charles Stuart and his family. By 1659-1660 Downing had recognized the change that was coming and joined the Royalist party, meeting with and being knighted by Charles II the 21 May 1660. He continued as envoy-extraordinary to Holland after the Restoration, caused the arrest of three of the regicides, was "confirmed in his tellership of the exchequer" and rewarded with the land which would be named after him and become Downing Street. It was "Principally though his agency the New Netherlands were wrested from the Dutch and annexed to the English possessions as New York" (Appleton) He was Secretary of the Treasury in 1667 and Commissioner of the custons in 1671. The DNB notes that "Downing's abilities are proved by his career, but his reputation was stained by servility, treachery, and avarices and i is difficult to find a good word for him on any contemporary author." It was separately noted that his name became a by-wor … [Click Below for Full Description]

London, printed by G.M.* for Will. Crooke, at the three bibles on Fleet-Bridge, 1665. 8vo., (4) + 66 + (2)pp., with 7 small woodcuts in the text, contemporary plain ruled sheep, head and foot of spine just a little worn else a very good crisp copy. First edition. A charming little book of etiquette dedicated by the author 'To the Worshipful Thomas Clifford, Esquire, and to the worshipful Henry Ford, Esquire, Justices of the Peace, for the County of Devon'. The author provides the reader with the rules of precedence of all and sundry from farm workers, and shopkeepers at the lowest level, through various ranks of craftsmen and the science-based professions (the Doctor of Physick, the orator, mathematician, geometrician, astronomer, musician and poet). There is a substantial section on funerals, including a table of what effectively were death duties, and also a useful index. The author seems to be otherwise unknown. * The printer, identified by Wing, was George Miller.

Athanasius KIRCHER (1601 circa - 1680)
The map is taken from Mundus Subterraneus, by Kircher, a Jesuit, one of the firsts writers to describe physical phenomena. Kircher thought that all oceans and seas were connected through subterranean tunnels. The map is the first representation of the Mediterranean marine streams. Copperplate, in excellent condition. It was printed in Leiden by the heirs and the widow of John Elzevier. It will be noted that another edition of the same date in Peter Hammer has a different snack: (2) 501pp. and (2) 493pp. and therefore appears to contain less text than the one presented; it is unexplained curiosity. Full Sheepskin blonde marbled time. Spine ribbed decorated with jewels compartmentalized. Part of title in red morocco, and volume number in black morocco. Head cover of Volume 1 with parts broken away; lack of volume 2 in head and tail. Lack of 1.5 cm along the upper jaw (to work). Coins for most blunt. Volume I slightly larger than 0.5cm Volume II. A translucent ink stain title page of Volume II of the flagship. Copy rather fine. Bassompierres was imprisoned in the Bastille in 1631 for participating in the Day of dupes; he devoted his detention twelve years writing his memoirs (Journal of my life) and its embassies will be issued in 1668 In addition to being one of the most accomplished gentlemen of his time, continued Bassompierres two bright parallel careers as Henri IV and Louis XIII, military and diplomatic. These memories have always been particularly tasted, they bear the seal of the bitterness of imprisonment and are the work of a French gentleman. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.
