DAVENANT, Sir William.
London printed for G. Bedel and T. Collins and are to be sold at their shop at the Middle Temple Gate in Fleet-street, 1665. 8vo, pp. [x], 182; contemporary sheep, ruled in blind, red morocco label (rebacked, preserving most of the original spine, with a slight snag at the top). First collected edition: with a separate title-page for each play, but continuous pagination. Each of these plays had been separately printed in 1636. First published by Richard Meighen, the rights in them passed, apparently by his widow, to the booksellers Bedel and Collins, whose names appear in the imprint here. Davenant had a long and successful career as a playwright and theatre manager; he succeeded Ben Jonson as unofficial poet laureate. A very good copy of an uncommon book: this is the Britwell copy, sold at auction on March 23, 1925 (lot 174). Wing D347; Woodward & McManaway 310; Pforzheimer 262. [Attributes: First Edition]

Church of England. Book of Common Prayer. Greek. 1665.
Ioannou Phieldou. [as issued, with the same publisher's] Bible. Psalms. Greek. 1664. Psalterion toy Dabid kata tous Hebdomekonta eis ta tmemata, ta en te tes Agglikanes Ekkesias leitourgia nomizomena, diegemenon. 12mo. 1664. [2], 115, [3], 117-71, [1] pp. [and] Bible. New Testament. Greek. 1665. Tes kaines diathekes apanta. 12mo. [2], 419, [1], pp. First edition of this Greek translation of the Book of Common Prayer. The preface is signed "I.D.," i.e., James Duport, a popular professor of Greek at the University of Cambridge, who had the year before printed a translation of the Psalter (which appears here with the BCP as issued, under a separate title-page) and Ordinal, along with the Greek New Testament and Apocrypha (the title-page of the New Testament being an insert, and the Apocrypha having separate pagination). This is only the second translation of the BCP into Greek, following the first by Elias Petley in 1638. There were apparently two settings of this edition produced by printer John Field in the same year, under the same title and imprint, with priority not established; the present example has line six of the main title-page all in capital letters, and the "Alma mater Cantabrigia" device following the last page of the Psalter -- but while the sun is on the left and the cup on the right of the Psalter title-page device, they are reversed on the New Testament title-page, apparently indicating that the New Testament is from a variant post-dating the BCP and Psalter. Binding: Contemporary mottled calf Cambridge-style, covers framed in double gilt fillets an … [Click Below for Full Description]

Boccaccio Giovanni
(Elzeviri), 1665.

CUREAU DE LA CHAMBRE, Marin.
Paris: Jacques Dallin, 1665 - Quarto (252 × 183 mm). Contemporary full calf, raised bands to spine, compartments gilt with floral lozenges within double ruled panels, presentation gilt stamp to the front board, "Aux Capuchins de St. Honoré". Light browning, a little rubbed on the boards and chafed on the joints, but a very good copy. Engraved map of the topography of the Nile to the text, title page vignette, historiated initials, engraved head- and tailpieces. First edition, for the first time published separately, previously included in his Pensées of 1634 and 1662; uncommon, just six copies on OCLC, three of them in the US. Cureau was Louis XIV's doctor, the monarch apparently having been impressed by his ability to judge character from outward appearance. A precursor of Lavater, Cureau's was indeed best known for his work in the area of physiognomy, but he also published on physics – the nature of light, on rainbows – the occult, and philosophy, the final paper here being a study of the divine in Platonic philosophy. The critic Jean Chapelain, his contemporary, said of him: "C'est un excellent philosophe, et dont les écrits sont purs dans le langage, justes dans le dessein, soutenus dans les ornements, et subtils dans les raisonnements." This could perhaps be a presentation copy, as in addition to the gilt supralibros there is an inked inscripton, "Pour les Capucins de St. Honoré" to the title page. The Capuchin convent adjoined the Tuileries gardens. The Blackmer copy with bookplate to front pastedown. Blackmer Catalogue 171; Ibrahim-Hilmy p. 351.

He completed writing Physico-Mathesis de Lumine shortly before his death and it was published in 1665. The work is an attempt by Grimaldi to determine whether light is a substance or whether it is a quality of another substance. He does this in a rather unusual way. The treatise consists of two books, the first puts forward arguments that light is a substance, although it does sometimes pu … [Click Below for Full Description]

Masini Eliseo
Ad instanza del Baglioni, 1665. In-8° (171x110mm), pp. 432, (64) di indice, 32 di "Aggionte", legatura coeva p. pergamena rigida con titolo in oro su tassello su dorso a falsi nervi. Alcune minimali macchioline alle prime cc. Ottimo esemplare. [Click Below for Full Description]

London: Printed for F. Tyton and Tho. Basset, and are to be sold at the Three Daggers, and in S. Dunstans Church-yard in Fleetstreet, 1665. Fair. Reissue of the 1659 edition. Folio. [10], 1-96, 107-114, 105-325, 332-371, [1]pp., 2 (of 4) full-page copperplates (engraved title and Figure of the High Priest are present), numerous half-page (and larger) copperplate engravings, woodcut diagrams and tables. Bound in mid-19th Century half calf and marbled paper boards, all edges stained red. ESTC calls for [4] leaves of plates and index. This copy thus lacks two plates and the 9 page index (with errata) at the rear, else complete. The text pagination is complete and continuous (though mis-numbered, as noted above!), with all of the in-text copperplate engravings present. The engraved frontispiece title page, the letterpress title page, and the engraved plate of the Figure of the High Priest are backed onto early wove paper. The boards are detached, scattered chipping and short tears at the edges of both title pages, some worming to the lower margin near the gutter, else good. The very scarce 1665 edition of Samuel Lee's interpretation of the architectural design, and attendant rites and mysteries of Solomon's Temple. Lee was a Puritan divine close to John Wilkins at Wadham College, Oxford, where, under their leadership, Wadham became an important liberal school in natural philosophy. ESTC (R41592) locates only one copy at the British Library. Wing L903F.
