Artist: Blaeu Willem Janszoon ca ; issued in: Amsterdam; date: ca1665. - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Perfect condition; - size (in cm): 46,5 x 57; - description: Map shows the observatory of Tycho Braha (Uraniborg) in Öresund, Denemark. From Astronomiae instauratae mechanica (1598).The building was dedicated to Urania, the Muse of Astronomy, and it was named Uraniborg, The Castle of Urania. It was the first custom-built observatory in modern Europe, though not the last to be built without a telescope as its primary instrument.; - vita of the artist: Joan Guilliemus Blaeu was the eldest son of Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571-1638), and was probably born in Alkmaar in the province of Noord-Holland in the final years of the 16th century. He was brought up in Amsterdam, and studied law at the University of Leiden before going into partnership with his father in the 1630s. Although his father Willem had cartographic interests, having studied under the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe and having manufactured globes and instruments, his primary business was as a printer. It was under the control of Joan that the Blaeu printing press achieved lasting fame by moving towards the printing of maps and expanding to become the largest printing press in Europe in the 17th century.By the 1660s the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (or Atlas Maior as it had became known by this time) had expanded to between 9 and 12 volumes, depending on the language. With over 3,000 text pages and approximately 600 maps, it was the most expensive book money could buy in the later 17th c … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lievin CRUYL (Ghendt 1640 - 1720)
Opera molto rara e ricercata. Magnifico esemplare della tiratura di Carlo Losi. Etching with engraving, 1665. A fine impression, with plate tone, of the third state of three, printed on 2 sheets of contemporary laid paper, full margins, very good condition. This map was published for the first time in 1665 by De Rossi; it is one of the rare images of the city depicting, at the same time, an iconographic and perspective system. The views are the same that the Flemish artist engraved afterwards as a sort of personal catalogue. The first state has been printed by Giovanni Battista De Rossi in 1665. The plate was then published by Matteo Gregorio de Rossi in 1696 and finally reissued by Carlo Losi, in 1773. It has been engraved by Giulio Testone on two copper plates. A very rare and important map of Rome. A g … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pfeiffer Augustus
1665. In-4 (19,5 cm) (8) 188 (4). Piena pergamena. Pagine arrossate. Disquisizione filologica sui grandi testi religiosi.

FARON, Luc.
A dictionary of medicinal remedies for more than 300 ailments, written in French and arranged alphabetically by the names of the ailments. It covers a very wide range of ailments from insomnia and menstrual problems to gangrene and even hypochondria, but especially noteworthy at this early date are the five pages (pp. 7-11) devoted to the eating disorders anorexia, pica (the eating of things that are not food) and bulimia. It begins with a list of weights and measures, sometimes giving equivalents (p. 1), followed by the alphabetical entries (pp. 2-604) and additions on epilepsy, tobacco oil and other subjects (pp. 605-621). After numerous blank leaves, the manuscript ends with a 9-page glossary with brief definitions of about 100 technical terms (a 2-page table of contents plus pp. a-i).What appears to be the oldest inscription on the endpapers, at the head of the first free endleaf, reads, "Faron m[aî]tre en chiru[r]gie". Little seems to be known about him, but is probably the Luc Faron, "maître chirurgien" in Paris whom a 1665 document describes as the second husband of Elisabeth Le Tellier. The dating is problematic and leaves may have been added during the writing of the text, possibly for decades. Some of the late additions to the manuscript are written in a different hand. With numerous contemporary and 19th-century inscriptions on the endleaves. A couple bifolia slightly loose, an occasional transparent ink stain (never obscuring the text), an occasional dried drop of what may be medicines, and a few leaves with minor and mostly marginal water stains, but still in go … [Click Below for Full Description]

Artist: Nieuhoff Johan ca ; issued in: Amsterdam; date: ca1665. - technic: Copper print; - colorit:; - condition: Perfect condition; - size (in cm): 28 x 34; - description: Kollam or Quilon, formerly Desinganadu, is an old seaport and city on the Laccadive Sea coast in Kerala, India on Ashtamudi Lake.Kollam has had a strong commercial reputation since the days of the Phoenicians and Romans. Fed by the Chinese trade, it was mentioned by Ibn Battuta in the 14th century as one of the five Indian ports he had seen during the course of his twenty-four year travels. Desinganadu's rajas exchanged embassies with Chinese rulers while there was a flourishing Chinese settlement at Kollam. In the 9th Century, on his way to Canton, China, Persian merchant Sulaiman al-Tajir found Kollam to be the only port in India visited by huge Chinese junks. Marco Polo, the great Venician traveller, who was in Chinese service under Kublai Khan in 1275, visited Kollam and other towns on the west coast, in his capacity as a Chinese mandarin.Neuhof (1618-1672) was a Dutch traveler who wrote about his journeys to Brazil, China and India. The most famous of these was a trip of 2,400 km from Canton to Peking in 1655-1657, which enabled him to become an authoritative Western writer on China. Johan Nieuhof was born in Uelsen, Germany, of which his father (originally from Zwolle) was mayor. Nieuhof left for Brazil in 1640 as a reserve officer-candidate - from then on, barring two short family visits in 1658 and 1671, he spent all the rest of his life abroad. Boyle, Robert.
London Herringman 1665 - (15 x 8,5 cm). (48) 444 S. Halbpergamentband der Zeit. Erste lateinische Ausgabe und zweite Ausgabe überhaupt. - "The treatise on 'Colours' ranks in importance with the 'Spring and Weight of the Air' and the 'Usefulness'. It deals with a large variety of phenomena and contains many generalizations which were subsequently adopted by Newton in his memorable treatise on 'Optics'. Boyle was the first to record that certain vegetable extracts, e.g. lignum nephriticum, change colour when the solution is made acid or changed from acid to alkali. In so doing, he gave to the world the first account of those important substances now well known to the chemist as 'indicators'. He also mentions the iridescence of metallic films and soap bubbles, and describes 'snow-blindness'" (Fulton). - Titel gering gebräunt und mit Notiz von alter Hand. Letztes Blatt mit restaurierten kleinen Fehlstellen und Einrissen (mit geringem Textverlust). Einband gering berieben. Insgesamt schönes und wohlerhaltenes Exemplar. - Fulton 59; vgl. Norman 302 (Ausg. 1670). - Sehr selten [Attributes: First Edition]

(ROHAN, H. DUC DE.)
A Cologne, 1665. Sphere on title. (8), 248 pp.; 245, (1) pp. 12mo. Contemporary overlapping vellum, handwritten title to spine. Willems 1371; Rahir 1431; BMSTC, French Books, 1601-1700, I.102; Barbier, ii, col. 954.Original edition. These two volumes are usually found bound together: the first text is by de Rohan, or at least based on de Rohan's work, additional material has been added. The author of the second text has remained unknown. This edition is rare. Willems writes that the text by de Rohan is almost unchanged, there was only substantial new matter added concerning subjects that de Rohan had not dealt with. The work is the chef-d'oeuvre in this particular field of political literature: its main thesis is that the interest of the state imposes itself upon kings: this interest of the state is the tyrant imposing itself upon the tyrant. It is written to give an overview of the situation in Europe and to determine which position France should take in various conflicts or potential conflicts, to establish what the influence of various countries and rulers is on and in various parts of Europe. It maintains that what constitutes good government changes over time just as conditions change over time and that good government bases itself not on old conceptions and abstractions but on the situation as it is at present. De Rohan was most likely influenced by the theorists of "raison d'Etat" in Italy, where he served for a long time.
