CASSINI, Gian Domenico [Jean-Dominique].
Rome: Fabio di Falco, 1665. First edition. Hardcover. First editions of these two exceptionally rare publications on the comet of 1664-5, which was observed my many astronomers, including Auzout, Borelli, Fabri, Hooke, Hevelius, Petit, and Newton as a studnt. The second work is also especially notable for containing the first published description of Jupiter's Great Red Spot. Cassini observed the comet "in the presence of Queen Christina [to whom the first work is dedicated] and formulated on this occasion a new theory (in agreement with the Tychonian system) in which the orbit of the comet is a great circle whose center is situated in the direction of Sirius and whose perigee is beyond the orbit of Saturn" (DSB). The large engraved plate depicts the course of the comet in the southern celestial hemisphere from December 13, 1664 through the middle of January, 1665; it also shows the appearance and direction of the comet's tail. Cassini's detailed observations were made with a powerful new telescope which he describes in the preface to the first work. "Through his friendship with the famous Roman lens-makers Giuseppe Campani and Eustachio Divini, Cassini, beginning in 1664, was able to obtain from them powerful celestial telescopes of great focal length. He used these instruments--very delicate and extremely accurate for the time-- with great skill, and made within several years a remarkable series of observations..." (<em>ibid</em>). OCLC lists Brown (lacking plate) for the first work, and Brown, Cornell, Ohio State for the second. ABPC/RBH lists one copy of <em>Theoriae</ … [Click Below for Full Description]

N[EEDHAM], M[archamont].
London: Printed for Richard Lownds, 1665. FIRST EDITION. G&M 2529: "Needham was one of the earliest -- if not the first -- Englishman to write on the germ theory. In his book he included an account of Kircher's experiments with the microscope." This is the fourth book on infection and immunology listed by G&M, the first modern book being that by Fracastoro who first promulgated the germ theory of infection. In Chapters III and IV Needham discusses infection, including Fracastoro's theory, and in Chapter V Kircher's Scrutinium (G&M 2528.1) and the use of the microscope, concluding that disease was spread by "such little invisible contagious bodies as these, carried through the air." This rare book, published in the year that the plague struck in Britain, was written as an attack on the College of Physicians. In it Needham argued that Galenic principles of medicine were corrupt and useless, and that liberty should be permitted in the practice of physic in order rationally to develop new chemical remedies. It is not noticed in the histories of Bulloch, Nordenskiöld or Foster. Wing N397. This was apparently the only edition.8vo, pp. (xxiv), 516 (i.e. 524, page nos. 193-200 duplicated). With the initial licence leaf. Contemporary speckled sheep, rubbed, tips of corners worn, several small holes in spine, strip of leather torn from lower board, but aside from these small defects in the binding a lovely, fresh copy in original state.

Feminism] GUILLAUME (Jacquette).
1665 - Paris, Thomas Jolly, 1665. 12mo, contemporary mottled calf, gilt spine with raised bands, red edges. First and only edition of this rare and peculiar text of 17th-century feminism. Using fictious but erudite speeches attributed to contemporary female writers, Jacquette Guillaume demonstrates the depravity of men and the moral superiority of women. Although each speech relies on the Scriptures to attack men and compliment women, the author's view were hardly in line with the dominant theology of the time. To our knowledge this books is indeed the first text to suggest that women (instead of men) were created in the image of God. Good copy in contemporary binding, minor restorations on the covers. Antique print, titled: 'Le Nouveau Mexique, Avec La Partie Septentrionale De L'Ancien, ou De La Nouvelle Espagne' - Fascinating map, showing excellent detail in Texas, Arizona and New Mexico. Includes a badly misprojected Baja California, as was normally the case with French maps of the period. Missions & settlements shown in the Texas interior. Indian tribes shown. Locates New Orleans & La Salle's 1665 location. Nice detail along Gulf Coast to east Florida. One of the most sought after maps of the region for the late 18th Century. Engraving / etching with hand colouring on hand laid paper. Description: Source unknown, to be determined.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Rigobert Bonne' after an anonymous artist. Rigobert Bonne (1727-1795 ) was one of the most important cartographers of the late 18th century. In 1773 he succeeded Jacques Bellin as Royal Cartographer to France in the office of the Hydrographer at the Depôt de la Marine. Working in his official capacity Bonne compiled some of the most detailed and accurate maps of the period. Bonne's work represents an important step in the evolution of the cartographic ideology away from the decorative work of the 17th and early 18th century towards a more detail oriented and practical aesthetic. With regard to the rendering of terrain Bonne maps bear many stylistic similarities to those of his predecessor, Bellin. Athanasius KIRCHER (1601 circa - 1680)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Testo in italiano e spagnolo.
