Bibliografia: Koeman pp. 332/338. Bird's-eye view of the city, taken from the "Theatrum Civitatum et admirandorum Italia". First edition of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Adams, Jack
1663. Adams, Jack (1625-?). Magnifico smokentissimo custardissimo astrologissimo cunningmanissimo rabbinissimo viro Iacko Adams de Clarkenwell Greeno hanc lovelissiman sui picturam. Engraved portrait. N.p., n.d. (1663 or later). Mounted. 130 x 76 mm. (engraving); 146 x 93 mm. (mount). Very good. Comic portrait of British astrologer Jack Adams, the "Cunning Man of Clerkenwell Green," captioned in dog-Latin and signed "Hobbedeboody pinxit et scratchabat." John Timbs, who reproduced this engraving in his English Eccentrics and Eccentricities (1875), gave the following brief biography of Adams: "Among the celebrities of Clerkenwell Green was Jack Adams, whose nativity was calculated by Partridge, who affirmed that he was born on the 3rd of December, 1625, and that he was so great a natural, or simpleton, as to be obliged to wear long coats, besides other marks of stupidity. . . . "Jack Adams was a conjurer and professor of the celestial sciences; he was (says Granger's Supplement) 'a blind buzzard, who pretended to have the eyes of an eagle. He was chiefly employed in horary questions, relative to love and marriage, and knew, upon proper occasions, how to soothe and flatter the expectations of those who consulted him, as a man might have much better fortune from him for five guineas than for the same number of shillings . . . He assumed the character of a learned and cunning man; but was no otherwise cunning than as he knew how to overreach those credulous mortals who were as willing to be cheated as he was to cheat them, and who relied implicitly upon his art.' . . . Pressick, George
Printed for the Author, 1663. Printed for the Author. Hardcover. B00JFGKEAG 1663 first edition 'printed for the author' (London) 5 3/4 x 7 1/2 inches tall hardbound, marbled boards over leather spine and tips, [16], 76, 81-291, [1], 118 pp. Covers are rubbed, bumped and edgeworn, with quite a bit of wear along the spine, but the binding is still solid and handsome. The gilt-lettered spine misspells the author's name, 'Preswick on the Church of Rome.' Bookplate to front pastedown from the Diocese of Down and Conor and Dromore, with a stamp noting the sale of the volume 'by order of the library committee.' (This was a diocese of the Church of Ireland, a province of the Anglican Communion in the north east of Ireland, prior to 1944.) The leaf preceding the title page - in which Pressick explains why he shouldn't be prosecuted for publishing this work unlicensed, Parliament having just passed the Licensing of the Press Act of 1662 - has been remounted and repaired, with minor loss to the printer's device at the top of the page. Likewise, minor loss to upper tip of title page and the next 4-5 leaves, only to the margins. A few headlines shaved at the top. Small dampstain to lower margin on the last 50 pages of the second work. A bit of minor worming with tiny holes to the top inner margin intermittently throughout. A few other instances of minor staining or foxing. Otherwise, an excellent copy of a scarce anti-Catholic polemic. The English Short Title Catalog records only one copy in North America, at Union Theological Seminary in New York, and nine copies in European librarie … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pallierio (Pallieri) Paolo Francesco
Importante e raro.

ELSYNGE, Henry
London: printed for Samuel Speed, at the Rain-bow in Fleet-street, near the Inner Temple-gate. 1663. 8vo., (16) + 237 + (1)pp., including the blank A8, attractively bound in late 19th century gilt-panelled calf, spine fully gilt with raised bands and label (one label missing), all in 17th century style, by Bayntun of Bath. A very good copy. Wing E.644. Sweet & Maxwell I, p.130 (#31). One of several posthumous early printings (1660, 1662, 1663, 1675, 1679), all condemned by the editor of the 1768 edition (Mr. Tyrwhit) who claims that they were 'printed from an incorrect copy and are incomplete and full of errors' (quoted by S & M). Henry Elsynge (1606?-1656), clerk of the House of Commons, who received his appointment through Archbishop Laud, wrote several works on parliamentary procedures. He numbered John Selden and Bulstrode Whitelocke among his intimate friends. Whitelocke described him as 'the most excellent Clerk, both to make and express the sense of the House that I believe ever set there'. (Quoted by J.C. Sainty in ODNB).

BLAEU, J.
Vom Westen gesehen. Mit zwei dekorativen Kartuschen. 39,5x50 cm. Amsterdam, o.J. [Erste Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts]. Mit einigen Namen untergestreicht. * Map of Grodkow (Silesia). Artist probably Blaeu, Joan & Guiljelmus. A handcolored version of the map was published in Amsterdam around 1663 in Joan Blaeu s »Atlas Major«.** Joan Blaeu was the eldest son of Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571-1638), and was probably born in Alkmaar in the province of Noord-Holland in 1596. He was brought up in Amsterdam, and studied law at the University of Leiden before going into partnership with his father in the 1630s. Although his father Willem had cartographic interests, having studied under the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe and having manufactured globes and instruments, his primary business was as a printer. It was under the control of Joan that the Blaeu printing press achieved lasting fame by moving towards the printing of maps and expanding to become the largest printing press in Europe in the 17th century. Until the late 1620s, the European market for world atlases was dominated by the Mercator maps published by Jodocus Hondius II. However, following the latter's death in 1629, and the growing competition in publishing sea charts and pilot books, the Blaeu business seized its opportunity to publish a grand world atlas: Theatrum Orbis Terrarum or Atlas Novus. Willem had already built up extensive contacts across Europe with … [Click Below for Full Description]

He won the patronage of Cardinal Richelieu and benefited from this association, becoming one of the earliest members of the Academie Francaise, established by Richelieu in 1635. Voiture's association with the French court and notable figures lend remarkable political insight to his letters, which are often better remembered than his poetry.
