Traité des tourbes combustibles ALTERNATIVE FUEL SOURCE

With engraved vignette on title and the famous portrait of ?"Monsieur Charles Patin?" by Claude Lefebvre, French painter and etcher. Contemporary full calf, slightly warped and somewhat worn; first and last leaves browned around the edges, small waterstain on last blank and paste-down, text in excellent condition. First edition of this very rare treatise describing the use of peat as a fuel. The author discusses the varieties and sources of combustible peat used to make charcoal as well as many useful by-products in agriculture, cooking and botany. At the time, charcoal was believed to mainly consist of bitumen and sulpher, causing strong fumes, which Patin was much opposed to because of his concern with dangers of health caused by inhalation. Proficient in metallurgy, Patin was an early advocate of ecology, with his knowledge that strong organic matter accumulates in the ground and gives rise to significant drops in mineral contents, causing many problems for plant growth. At the end of the book is a proposal of the Sieur de Chambre for the artificial production of peat bogs surrounding Paris along with royal letter patent for a thirty year process. Patin (1633-1693), the gifted son of Gui Patin, by the age of 23 completed his law studies and received his M.D. degree. He taught anatomy and pathology at the medical school of Paris, but was obliged to leave France for fear of imprisonment for circulation of certain libels which drew upon him the resentment of the court. He traveled extensively, finally settling in Padua, Italy, where he was appointed professor of chemistry, physic and medicine. He was a man of extensive learning and a voluminous writer in Latin, French, and Italian. Patin is well known for his work on numismatics and medals.

Articulen van vrede ende Confoederatie, Ghesslooten tusschen den doorluchtighsten coningh van Portugael ter eenre ende de hoogh mogende heeren Staten Generael der Vereenighde Nederlanden ter andere zyde

Brazil and the African dominions go to Portugal, whilst the Far East and South East Asia colonies go to the Dutch. 1663. Gravenhage. Hillebrandt van Wouw. In 4to (197 mm x 150 mm). 14 ff. Unbound. Excellent copy, with only mainly marginal foxing spots.First edition. The Dutch-Portuguese War was an armed conflict involving Dutch forces in the form of the Dutch East India Company and the Dutch West India Company, against the Portuguese (1602 ?" 1663). During the conflict, Salvador de Bahia for instance, would change hands back and forth twice; raids and acts of privateering were common as well. The result of the war was that Portugal won in South America (Dutch Brazil) and Africa (Angola and São Tomé), and the Dutch were the victors in the Far East and South Asia. The war was concluded in 1661, and the terms were settled with this treatise; it´s importance for both the West and East Indies was considerable, and translations soon were prepared. The result of the treatise shaped the future of Asian and American colonies for about a century, with remnants of their colonization present to-date in architecture, language, etc. "This treaty between Portugal and the States General relates to Brazil" (Sabin).Rare, no copies have appeared at auction in the last 30 years.Sabin, 2157; European Americana III, 172.         LA CHIROMANCE, LA PHYSIONOMIE, ET LA GEOMANCE Avec la signification des Nombres, & l'usage de la Roue de Pytagore.

A Paris, Chez Louis Billaine, 1663.

The first map has the address of Nicolaes Visscher, Amsterdam with Spanish text on the verso. Volume IV of the Spanish Atlas Major, from the different editions of the Atlas Major counts the Spanish edition as the scarcest. Bound in a vellum binding with supralibros of the Admirality of Rotterdam in gold with in the corners a celestial globe hitherto unknown and with the initials PPP (Pro Patria Pugno: 'I fight for the fatherland', which was the motto of the seventeenth-century Admiralities). This could be one of the six large paper copies saved from the fire in 1672. In 1672 Blaeu's printing house was destroyed by fire, and many of the copperplates for the maps were damaged. Because of this loss it became impossible to produce complete sets of the different versions of the Blaeu atlas once the stock of printed leaves was used. The stock of printed leaves for the Spanish Blaeu atlas was that much destroyed that it was no longer possible to supply complete sets of this work, apart from some completed copies that were stocked in the shop on the Water. The rareness of the Spanish Blaeu atlas is underlined by H. de la Fontaine Verwey in Uit de Wereld van het Boek III, page 183-193: 'Anton Mensing specialist of atlases could during his whole life only lay hands on two volumes: Germany and The Netherlands' (the latter in the Scheepvaart Museum in Amsterdam, poorly coloured). The Spanish Blaeu is and remains a valuable publication with a remarkable history, and furthermore a striking evidence of the distinction and prestige of the Dutch cartography and typography in the second half of the seventeenth century, also in Spain.)

London: Printed by F. Grismond, 1663. FIRST EDITION n. Hardcover. Describing his "Water-Commanding Engine" More than a Century before Watt's Steam Engine. 133 x 79 mm (5 1/4 x 3 1/8"). 10 p.l., 72 pp., [1] leaf (blank), [10] pp., [2] leaves (first blank), 34 pp. (Missing blank A1.). FIRST EDITION. Early 19th century polished half calf and marbled boards, neatly rejointed, flat spine competently rebacked incorporating most of original backstrip, original red morocco label. With woodcut initials and headpieces, and full-page royal coat of arms of Charles II preceding the supplement. Norman 1975; Wing W-3532. Extremities a bit rubbed, paper boards a little chafed, offsetting to endpapers from binder's glue, faint marginal browning and isolated mild foxing, one leaf with burn hole barely touching two letters, other trivial imperfections, but AN EXCELLENT COPY of a scarce work, the restored binding quite sound, and the text clean and fresh, with deep impressions of the type. This small, quirky publication contains descriptions of several significant inventions, including the celebrated "water-commanding engine," a device entitled to be called the first steam engine. Additionally, our copy contains the 34-page supplement---very frequently missing, as in the Norman copy--that features what basically amounts to a patent for that important machine. (In this section, as in a modern patent, Worcester describes the parts and function of his water-commanding engine in an application to King Charles II, and an Act of Parliament dated 20 September 1663 grants Worcseter the right to receive "the benefit and profit of a Water-commanding Engine by him invented," reserving 10 percent of the benefits therefrom to the Crown.) Other impressive inventions described in our little volume include a calculating machine, a universal language, repeating firearms, time bombs for use against enemy ships, a mechanical flying bird, a device for enabling a man to fly, burglar-proof locks, and eight different mechanical alphabets. Edward Somerset, 2nd Marquess of Worcester (d. 1667), was a courtier with a strong interest in science and engineering. According to the DNB, around 1628 "he employed a Dutch engineer, Caspar Calthoff, to assist him with experiments at [his] castle. Although no surviving trace of it was ever found during twentieth-century conservation work there, it is possible that a machine employing the propulsive properties of steam was constructed to raise water to the full height of the great tower." As a Royalist, Worcester was forced to flee to France when the monarchy fell, but by 1652, he had returned to England, where he was allowed his freedom by Cromwell, who seems to have been a supporter of the young marquess' scientific pursuits. Worcester resumed his partnership, and the present catalogue was composed. In the words of DNB, of the catalogue's various inventions, "the 'water commanding engine' . . . excited [the] most interest among historians of science, because its inventor claimed to have found a way to 'drive up water by fire.' (Dircks, 475) Although the word 'steam' was not used as a term in science or engineering until after Worcester's death, the water commanding engine appears to have been powered by that means, and thus the marquess has been promoted, most vigorously by [his biographer] Dircks, as an inventor of the steam engine." It is especially lucky to find this work with the supplement: an exhaustive search of OCLC, COPAC, and KVK locates 10 institutional copies but only four that seem to have the supplement, one at University College London and three at German libraries.

        Familiæ Romanæ

[Paris: 1663] - Engraved title by Chauveau, engraved dedication to Charles Le Brun, 249 leaves engraved with coins. Oblong 8vo. Newly bound in tan goatskin, the covers with a blind fillet border and panel, the spine divided into six panels, lettered in the second and dated at the foot, the others tooled with a blind ornament, plain endleaves and edges. The title and dedication leaf have been closely trimmed at the foot with slight loss, and a few of the plates are rather closely trimmed at the head to just within the plate marks. There is some occasional light browning and soiling but it is a good copy. There is a 2pp manuscript index at the end and one of the plates has a coin added in brown ink into two of the blank roundels. The volume came from the library at Woburn Abbey, though there are now no marks of provenance. The book illustrates the ancient coins that were part of the collection of Fulvio Orsini. One of the leaves has been printed with two plates, and all the others have only one plate (displaying a varying number of coins). Comparing this copy with the Earl of Pembroke's and William Roscoe's copies it is evident that there were a number of different issues of this book published in 1663.

London 1663 - First Edition, Very Good/ No Jacket, Full-Leather. Samuel Butler's 'Hudibras' is a literary treasure by any estimation. It concerns the English Civil War and it was intended to ridicule the Presbyterians, Dissenters, and others who had fought against the crown in the conflict between Charles I and Oliver Cromwell. It was published shortly after the restoration of Charles II and the poem had immense popularity at the time. This set is an extremely rare offering as it contains all three volumes (1663-1664-1678) in the first edition and the first issue. I have found no other copies of this set currently available and the ABPC indicates that no full first edition set has been offered for decades. The three volumes are the first issues of the authentic 'author's own' First editions. All points of issue in Lowndes are present in these books. The volumes are bound in full calf (mid 17th century) with hand tooled ornamentation on all front and back boards. The boards show some rubbing and staining from age but they are beautiful nevertheless. The textblocks are virtually pristine with no foxing except on the blank preliminary pages. Volume two lacks the imprimatur preliminary page. Otherwise the texts are absolutely complete. There have been minor repairs done by a professional binder to strengthen the inner rear hinges of both volumes 1 and 2. The errata are all present as called for. Volume three has been rebacked. Volume three was issued in a different size than the other two volumes and this has been compensated for in the magnificent presentation that I commissioned for this work. These are extremely rare books. PRESENTATION CASE: These fine volumes are housed in a full leather case that is made of the finest leather. The case is lined in hand-painted book paper much as the marbled paper found on endpapers. There is a small shim installed in the case to compensate for the differing height of volume three. Each volume has it's own hand made cover that it goes into before inserting the volume into the case. The three covers are made from both leather and the same painted paper that is inside the case. The spines of the covers are leather with leather labels and 23k gold titling indicating the title and volume. I know that this sounds complicated but these things can be hard to describe. I would encourage you to ask for pictures if you have a serious interest in this set. The rear of the covers is also leather. All in all, this is a wonderful copy and presentation of the Great 'Mock-Epic' poem 'Hudibras. We are pleased to send pictures on request. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
