Cfr. Fowler Collection, p. 266: "The woodcut illustrations of Book I - V seem to be from the same blocks as those of the Venice edition of 1560 but greately reworked.. An interesting feature of this edition is the numerous printer's devices and other ornaments used as tailpieces". Solo lievi aloni e tracce d'uso sparse, altrim. esempl. ben conservato. "Sebastiano Serlio (1475-1554) is one of the four Renaissance authors, with Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola, Andrea Palladio, and Vincenzo Scamozzi, who surpassed in importance Vitruvius and his sixteenth-century commentators. The first to publish an original and illustrated architectural treatise in Italian, he offered practical rules for architectural design, which were intended for the ordinary reader rather than the elite humanists and ruling aristocrats for whom Leon Battista Alberti had written. Serlio avoided theorizing and provided direct aid through woodcuts illustrations..". Cosi' The M.J. Millard Architectural Collection,125.

Chez Jean Samnix 1663 - - Chez Jean Samnix, A Cologne 1663, pet. in 12 (7,5x12,5cm), (2) 437pp. (2) 437pp. (2) et (4) 385pp. (6) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The first map has the address of Nicolaes Visscher, Amsterdam with Spanish text on the verso. Volume IV of the Spanish Atlas Major, from the different editions of the Atlas Major counts the Spanish edition as the scarcest. Bound in a vellum binding with supralibros of the Admirality of Rotterdam in gold with in the corners a celestial globe hitherto unknown and with the initials PPP (Pro Patria Pugno: 'I fight for the fatherland', which was the motto of the seventeenth-century Admiralities). This could be one of the six large paper copies saved from the fire in 1672. In 1672 Blaeu's printing house was destroyed by fire, and many of the copperplates for the maps were damaged. Because of this loss it became impossible to produce complete sets of the different versions of the Blaeu atlas once the stock of printed leaves was used. The stock of printed leaves for the Spanish Blaeu atlas was that much destroyed that it was no longer possible to supply complete sets of this work, apart from some completed copies that were stocked in the shop on the Water. The rareness of the Spanish Blaeu atlas is underlined by H. de la Fontaine Verwey in Uit de Wereld van het Boek III, page 183-193: 'Anton Mensing specialist of atlases could during his whole life only lay hands on two volumes: Germany and The Netherlands' (the latter in the Scheepvaart Museum in Amsterdam, poorly coloured). The Spanish Blaeu is and remains a valuable publication with a remarkable history, and furthermore a striking evidence of the distinction and prestige of the Dutch cartography and typography in the second half of the seventeenth century, also in Spain.)

A CENTURY OF THE NAMES AND SCANTLINGS OF SUCH INVENTIONS, AS AT PRESENT I CAN CALL TO MIND TO HAVE TRIED AND PERFECTED

London: Printed by F. Grismond, 1663. FIRST EDITION n. Hardcover. Describing his "Water-Commanding Engine" More than a Century before Watt's Steam Engine. 133 x 79 mm (5 1/4 x 3 1/8"). 10 p.l., 72 pp., [1] leaf (blank), [10] pp., [2] leaves (first blank), 34 pp. (Missing blank A1.). FIRST EDITION. Early 19th century polished half calf and marbled boards, neatly rejointed, flat spine competently rebacked incorporating most of original backstrip, original red morocco label. With woodcut initials and headpieces, and full-page royal coat of arms of Charles II preceding the supplement. Norman 1975; Wing W-3532. Extremities a bit rubbed, paper boards a little chafed, offsetting to endpapers from binder's glue, faint marginal browning and isolated mild foxing, one leaf with burn hole barely touching two letters, other trivial imperfections, but AN EXCELLENT COPY of a scarce work, the restored binding quite sound, and the text clean and fresh, with deep impressions of the type. This small, quirky publication contains descriptions of several significant inventions, including the celebrated "water-commanding engine," a device entitled to be called the first steam engine. Additionally, our copy contains the 34-page supplement---very frequently missing, as in the Norman copy--that features what basically amounts to a patent for that important machine. (In this section, as in a modern patent, Worcester describes the parts and function of his water-commanding engine in an application to King Charles II, and an Act of Parliament dated 20 September 1663 grants Worcseter the right to receive "the benefit and profit of a Water-commanding Engine by him invented," reserving 10 percent of the benefits therefrom to the Crown.) Other impressive inventions described in our little volume include a calculating machine, a universal language, repeating firearms, time bombs for use against enemy ships, a mechanical flying bird, a device for enabling a man to fly, burglar-proof locks, and eight different mechanical alphabets. Edward Somerset, 2nd Marquess of Worcester (d. 1667), was a courtier with a strong interest in science and engineering. According to the DNB, around 1628 "he employed a Dutch engineer, Caspar Calthoff, to assist him with experiments at [his] castle. Although no surviving trace of it was ever found during twentieth-century conservation work there, it is possible that a machine employing the propulsive properties of steam was constructed to raise water to the full height of the great tower." As a Royalist, Worcester was forced to flee to France when the monarchy fell, but by 1652, he had returned to England, where he was allowed his freedom by Cromwell, who seems to have been a supporter of the young marquess' scientific pursuits. Worcester resumed his partnership, and the present catalogue was composed. In the words of DNB, of the catalogue's various inventions, "the 'water commanding engine' . . . excited [the] most interest among historians of science, because its inventor claimed to have found a way to 'drive up water by fire.' (Dircks, 475) Although the word 'steam' was not used as a term in science or engineering until after Worcester's death, the water commanding engine appears to have been powered by that means, and thus the marquess has been promoted, most vigorously by [his biographer] Dircks, as an inventor of the steam engine." It is especially lucky to find this work with the supplement: an exhaustive search of OCLC, COPAC, and KVK locates 10 institutional copies but only four that seem to have the supplement, one at University College London and three at German libraries.

[Paris: 1663] - Engraved title by Chauveau, engraved dedication to Charles Le Brun, 249 leaves engraved with coins. Oblong 8vo. Newly bound in tan goatskin, the covers with a blind fillet border and panel, the spine divided into six panels, lettered in the second and dated at the foot, the others tooled with a blind ornament, plain endleaves and edges. The title and dedication leaf have been closely trimmed at the foot with slight loss, and a few of the plates are rather closely trimmed at the head to just within the plate marks. There is some occasional light browning and soiling but it is a good copy. There is a 2pp manuscript index at the end and one of the plates has a coin added in brown ink into two of the blank roundels. The volume came from the library at Woburn Abbey, though there are now no marks of provenance. The book illustrates the ancient coins that were part of the collection of Fulvio Orsini. One of the leaves has been printed with two plates, and all the others have only one plate (displaying a varying number of coins). Comparing this copy with the Earl of Pembroke's and William Roscoe's copies it is evident that there were a number of different issues of this book published in 1663.

Commissioned by the Emperor Justinian in 530 CE, the body of writings known collectively as the Corpus Juris Civilis preserved and restated all existing Roman law. Compiled in three years under the direction of Tribonium, it was both a critical restatement of earlier law and jurisprudential writings and a complete collection of recent legislation. It is divided into four books, the Institutes, Digest, Code and Novels. The Code contains the laws in force during Justinian's reign. It is divided into 12 books. Book 1 deals with ecclesiastical law, the sources of law, and the duties of high officials. Books 2-8 deal with private law. Book 9 deals with criminal law. Books 10-12 deal with administrative law. It received a great deal of commentary during the medieval and early modern eras. That of Denis Godefroy was influential well into the twentieth century. Godefroy was a jurist, humanist, historian, scholar of Roman law and professor at the Universities of Geneva and Heidelberg. Divided into two closely related parts, this posthumous work is devoted to the laws of hydrostatics and to the demonstration and description of the various effects of the weight of air. Continuing the investigations of Stevin, Galileo, Torricelli, and Mersenne, he provided in the Traites a lucid account of the fundamental concept of pressure. 'Using the recently invented Torricellian barometer, Pascal had his brother-in-law climb the Puy de Dome in 1648 and watch the barometer level fall with the ascent, thereby demonstrating that air had weight . The relationship of barometric change and change in the weather was first outlined here' (Dibner). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

(Hanau 1663).. . Goed.         Results of Astronomical Observations Made During the Years 1834, 5, 6, 7, 8, at the Cape of Good Hope; Being the Completion of a Telescopic Survey of the Whole Surface of the Visible Heavens Commence idewittn 1825. London, Smith, Elder and Co., 1847

INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR, A FOLIO FIRST EDITION of "the first great star-atlas of the southern hemisphere' (Norman Catalogue 1056). "With this monumental survey of the stars of the southern hemisphere, Herschel completed the task begun by his father William, who fifty years earlier had catalogued the northern celestial hemisphere. Using a twenty foot reflecting telescope, which he erected just south of Cape Town, Herschel swept the whole of the southern sky, cataloging nebulae, cluster and binary stars, carrying out the counts of over 68,000 stars. . . he made detailed drawings and maps" (Honeyman 1663). "Herschel stands almost alone in his attempt to grapple with the dynamical problems presented by star-clusters, and his analysis of the Magellanic Clouds was decisive as to the status of nebulæ" (Oxford DNB). The story of the publication of this work is important, particularly given that this copy is inscribed in the author's hand, noted as such in print, and that no other such copies have been recorded. See scans attached. In print it reads "Presented by Algernon Duke of Northumberland to" and then in Herschel's hand "Professor Robinson, New York, With the Author's Compliments." Additionally, the dedication page notes in text that "This work is gratefully inscribed by the author." "By the end of 1842 [Herschel] had performed without assistance the computations necessary for the publication [in this work] of his Cape observations. In September 1843 the letterpress was 'fairly begun,' and after some delays the work appeared in 1847, at the cost of the Duke of Northumberland, in a large quarto volume, entitled 'Results of Astronomical Observations made during the years 1834-8 at the Cape of Good Hope.' Besides the catalogues of nebulæ and double stars, it included profound discussions of various astronomical topics, and was enriched with over sixty exquisite engravings. He insisted in it upon the connection of sun-spots with the sun's rotation, and started the 'cyclonic theory' of their origin. [Herschel] investigated graphically the distribution of nebulæ, but fluctuated in his views as to their nature. Regarding them in 1825 as probably composed of 'a self-luminous or phosphorescent substance, gradually subsiding into stars and sidereal systems' (Memoirs Royal Astronomical Society, ii. 487), he ascribed to them later a stellar constitution, and finally inclined to suppose them formed of 'discrete luminous bodies floating in a non-luminous medium" (ibid). CONDITION & DETAILS: Folio (13 x 10.25 inches; 325 x 256mm). [12], xx, [452 pp], 17 plates, [6 ii, errata and additions, often lacking]. The first 13 plates, including the four folding plates, are engraved, the remaining four are lithographed.
