Leydon: Peter Leffen & Francis Moyard, 1662. First edition. FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST TEXTBOOK OF PHYSIOLOGY. "René Descartes's Treatise of man (De homine, 1662; Traité de l'homme, 1664) was never intended to stand as a work on its own. It was one part of a much larger work, Le monde (The world). Although this was finished around 1633, Descartes did not publish it himself because he was alarmed by the Italian Inquisition's condemnation of Galileo Galilei that year. Some time after Descartes's death in 1650, his French manuscript, copies of which had circulated among his friends and correspondents, was edited and published. The first version was a Latin translation (De homine) by Florentius Schuyl in 1662, the second the now better known 'original' French version (Traité de l'homme) edited by Descartes's self-appointed literary executor Claude Clerselier in 1664. In the seventeenth century the 1662 Latin version was probably much more widely read than the French text" (Donaldson, J R Coll Physicians Edinb 2009; 39:375-6). Heirs of Hippocrates, 295. VOSS, Isaac.
Amstelodami, apud Ludovicum and Danielem Elzevirios, 1662. in-4 piccolo, pp. (8), 85, (3), cartonato originale. [Click Below for Full Description]

First published in 1623 with title: De ratione et methodo legendi historias dissertatio (STC 25325); first published as "Relectiones hyemales" in 1637, as a revised version of the first 1625 Oxford edition (STC 25326). ESTC records 5 copies in the UK (3 in Oxford libraries), plus Folger. Wheare's 'reputation rests less upon these lectures [as first Camden Professor of Ancient History, the oldest chair of history in England] than upon his Latin manual on how to read and profit from history, which he composed and published at the beginning of his tenure, and revised and expanded in subsequent editions. Two titles were used: De ratione et methodo legendi historias dissertatio (1623, 1625, 1628) and Relectiones hyemales de ratione et methodo legendi utrasque historias civiles et ecclesiasticas (1637, 1662, 1684). The 1662 edition contained many additions by Nicholas Horseman. Further changes and additions were made in an English translation by the Tory pamphleteer Edmund Bohun, The Method and Order of Reading both Civil and Ecclesiastical Histories (1685, 1694, 1698, 1710)' (O … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

GOLDMANN, Nikolaus
[Click Below for Full Description]

Salvator ROSA
[Click Below for Full Description]

[Southampton House, England]: 21 April 1662. 1 bifolium, (11-3/4 x 8-1/4 in.), accomplished entirely in manuscript. Docketed verso: "Sr Tho. Whetstones warrant for £100 out of the privy seals dormant. [indistinct initials follow].". 1 vols. 4to. According to David F. Marley's Pirates of the Americas, Sir Thomas Whetstone (1630/31-1668?) was a nephew of Oliver Cromwell "reduced from a Commonwealth naval Commodore into an impoverished West Indian rover, before dying in Spanish hands." Whetstone is described by ODNB as a naval officer and adventurer and a son of the favorite sister of the protectorate. Through nepotism per the protector's "misplaced patronage" Whetsone quickly rose through the naval ranks. He ascended from a volunteer on Penn's flagship in the 1654 expedition to Hispaniola, was given command of a ship on the return voyage home, and eventually commanded a squadron cruising the waters between Malta and Crete. Whetstone soon became a man of questionable integrity. He flouted orders, sold grain seriously needed to sustain the fleet for his own profit, quarreled with officers and, in general, showed high levels of insolence, incompetence, and dallied onshore, avoiding naval duties. Cromwell's death changed Whetstone's fortunes. When it became apparent to political forces that his usefulness as a pawn to control the naval fleet was insignificant, Whetsone returned to England at the restoration, impoverished and spent. By 1661 he was in a debtor's jail in Marshalsea where he became a royal nuisance by "bombarding" the government for employment and begging relatives f … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Porrée, Jonas]
[s.l: s.n], 1662. Second edition (enlarged). [40], 118, [1]. 1 vols. Small 4to. The Pagan Rites of the Church. The dedication, to Charles II, King of England is new to this edition, and is signed "Jonas Porrée", to whom Barbier therefore attributes the authorship, even though Porrée in his dedication maintains that the author is anonymous and claims only to have added some illustrations and examples to the text of the first edition (Amsterdam, 1646). The author attempts to trace the origins of rites of the Roman Catholic Church, linking them to pagan rituals, in an attempt to undermine the authority of the Church. This edition of 1662 was doubtless the text which Thomas Douglas used for his English translation of 1668 [Wing P-2980]. Signed on the fornt cover in ink by the nephew of SAMUEL TAYLOR COLERIDGE, "Francis George Coleridge / The Manor House / 1843". Francis George Coleridge was the son of Samuel Taylor's brother, James Coleridge. Barbier IV: 773e. Contemporary vellum, remnant of leather spine label. Covers and spine a little soiled.

Prynne, William
London: Printed for the Author by T[homas] C[hilde] and L[eonard] P[arry], 1662. First edition, large-paper copy. Title within typographic border and headpieces. 4to. Dedication copy to King Charles II. Prynne (1600-1669), the ardent Puritan controversialist twice convicted of sedition and tortured, was forgiven at the Restoration and appointed by the King as keeper of the records in the Tower of London. "F. W. Maitland called this aspect of Prynne's career 'heroic' ... There was a double heroism: the physical labour that Prynne described, but also the intellectual rescue of a historical feudal law from the myth of an ancient constitution (to which Prynne in the 1630s, as a disciple of Coke, had himself subscribed). The Commons' claim to sovereignty could not stand up to the scrutiny of sources; the king's imperial powers, on the other hand, were given a heightened vindication" (ODNB). Wing P4011; ESTC R5505. Cf. BL C.23.e.6 for same armorial stamp. Provenance: Clarence S. Bemens (bookplate); Robert S. Pirie (bookplate). Contemporary blue morocco, gilt roll-tooled double border with lily stamps at four corners, gilt-stamped arms of Charles II in center of each cover; joints worn, upper joint mended, extremities rubbed, lightly browned, a few marginal spots or smudges.

(Binding)
London: Henry Hills and John Field, 1660 (NT); [London: Bill & Barker, 1662] (BCP); 1661 (Psalms). Woodcut of the Royal Arms of Charles II on verso of final leaf of the Common Prayer. 1 vols. 8vo. An Elegant "Sombre" Binding & An Intriguing Inscription. A handsome volume, made even more interesting by the contemporary ownership inscription "Elizabeth Maynard 1663" on the verso of the New Testament title page, and, in her handwriting on the blank recto of the Psalms, "What Children I have christened [there follows a list of nine names] Innocents day 1665" plus additional notations of subsequent christenings in 1665 and 1667. As the "Children" included a Mrs Cooper, it may be that the word is used in an ecclesiastical sense; and it is interesting to conjecture what role Elizabeth Maynard played in the ceremony in these years following the Restoration of 1660. Herbert 669 or 670 (with OT); Griffiths 1662-1663.3. Contemporary black morocco "sombre" binding, elaborately tooled in blind on upper and lower covers with a central lozenge cartouche made from double impressions of two separate tools, the same tools being used to decorate the four corners, the design surrounded by floral sprays, spine of six raised banks with floral tooling in each of the seven compartments, inner gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, a.e.g. Front joint repaired, skillful minor restoration to the corners by Sotheran, overall a very attractive binding. Lacks first three leaves of Book of Common Prayer.
