John Trapp
See bibliographic description. Annotations Upon the Old and New Testament, London: Printed by R. W. Anno Dom 1662, was compiled by minister and theologian John Trapp (1601-1669) and appeared in five volumes in 1662, of which the present offering is of volume 1 only. The five volumes are extremely rare, and are found in a mere handful of libraries in the US and UK; what is most impressive about this volume is its early Colonial and Revolutionary American provenance as attested to by the signatures of ownership in the volume. This volume appears to be bound in calf leather, but the covers are sufficiently worn to prevent definitive identification of their composition. Although the front cover has become detached from the volume and the back cover is still attached but going, internally the volume is complete and readable despite foxing and some moderate age discoloration of pages. Including covers, the volume measures 7-1/2" (w) x 11-5/8" (h); this 544pp. volume includes an unnumbered "Alphabetical Table" (ie., Index) at the end of the volume. This volume supplies "Commentary or Exposition" on the following Old Testament texts: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, I Samuel, II Samuel, I Kings, II Kings, I Chronicles, and II Chronicles. The provenance of this volume in colonial New England dates from Thomas Brattle (1658-1713), a mathematician and astronomer and a founder of the Brattle St. Church in Cambridge, MA, who signed the volume on 1st October 1678; William Brattle (1662-1717), a founder of the First Parish, Cambridge, MA, who signed the vol … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOYLE, Robert.
Second edition but the first announcement of Boyle's law, relating to the inverse proportion of the volume and pressure of a gas, which was Boyle’s most important achievement in physics and one of the greatest contributions to physical science. Not only does Boyle here enunciate a fundamental law, but he supports it with the evidence of verifiable experiments. It exemplifies perfectly the methodology of what is now known as the experimental method of science: hypothesis tested by experimental proof, which Boyle was among the first to adopt. To this second edition Boyle added a defence of his views against attacks by Hobbes and Franciscus Linus, among others. "This second edition (here cited) is particularly important for what Boyle called an 'hypothesis' but what we know as 'Boyle's Law': that the volume of air in a confined space varies inversely as the pressure. He demonstrated this by much experimental detail: with experiments on rarefaction performed by others, including Hooke, and on compression performed by himself" (PMM). DESCARTES, RENÉ
Leydon: Peter Leffen & Francis Moyard, 1662. First edition. contemporary vellum. Very Good. FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST TEXTBOOK OF PHYSIOLOGY. "René Descartes's Treatise of man (De homine, 1662; Traité de l'homme, 1664) was never intended to stand as a work on its own. It was one part of a muchlarger work, Le monde (The world). Although this was finished around 1633, Descartes did not publish it himself because he was alarmed by the Italian Inquisition's condemnation of Galileo Galilei that year. Some time after Descartes's death in 1650, his French manuscript, copies of which had circulated among his friends and correspondents, was edited and published. The first version was a Latin translation (De homine) by Florentius Schuyl in 1662, the second the now better known 'original' French version (Traité de l'homme) edited by Descartes's self-appointed literary executor Claude Clerselier in 1664. In the seventeenth century the 1662 Latin version was probably much more widely read than the French text" (Donaldson, J R Coll Physicians Edinb 2009; 39:375-6). Heirs of Hippocrates, 295. Garrison-Morton 574.With 10 engraved plates; with 2 lift-up flaps on plate depicting the heart, but without flap on plate of the brain (as usual); numerous full-page and text engravings and woodcuts. Inscribed on title to Mart. Christian Sweerts, "ex dono Autoris". The "author" in this case is most likely the translator Schuyl. Salvator ROSA
Acquaforte e puntasecca, 1662 circa, siglato in lastra, in basso al centro "Salvator Rosa Inu pinx. Sculp.". [Click Below for Full Description]

Graesse VII, 152.

Leydon: Peter Leffen & Francis Moyard, 1662. First edition. FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST TEXTBOOK OF PHYSIOLOGY. "René Descartes's Treatise of man (De homine, 1662; Traité de l'homme, 1664) was never intended to stand as a work on its own. It was one part of a much larger work, Le monde (The world). VOSS, Isaac.
Amstelodami, apud Ludovicum and Danielem Elzevirios, 1662. in-4 piccolo, pp. (8), 85, (3), cartonato originale. [Click Below for Full Description]

Wheare (Degory)
W. Hall for Thom. Robinson, 1662. pp. [xxxii], 342; 15, [1], 12mo, contemporary (presumably Oxford) calf, double blind ruled borders on sides, additional pair of vertical blind rules towards the spine, with a fleur-de-lys in every corner, spine defective at top and tail, wear to covers with some loss of surface, partial or complete, exposed boards coloured in, narrow fly-leaves from an early edition of Ammianus Marcellinus, that at the end mostly torn away, some early annotations, but faded and illegible. First published in 1623 with title: De ratione et methodo legendi historias dissertatio (STC 25325); first published as "Relectiones hyemales" in 1637, as a revised version of the first 1625 Oxford edition (STC 25326). ESTC records 5 copies in the UK (3 in Oxford libraries), plus Folger. Wheare's 'reputation rests less upon these lectures [as first Camden Professor of Ancient History, the oldest chair of history in England] than upon his Latin manual on how to read and profit from history, which he composed and published at the beginning of his tenure, and revised and expanded in subsequent editions. Two titles were used: De ratione et methodo legendi historias dissertatio (1623, 1625, 1628) and Relectiones hyemales de ratione et methodo legendi utrasque historias civiles et ecclesiasticas (1637, 1662, 1684). The 1662 edition contained many additions by Nicholas Horseman. Further changes and additions were made in an English translation by the Tory pamphleteer Edmund Bohun, The Method and Order of Reading both Civil and Ecclesiastical Histories (1685, 1694, 1698, 1710)' (O … [Click Below for Full Description]
