John Trapp
See bibliographic description. Annotations Upon the Old and New Testament, London: Printed by R. W. Anno Dom 1662, was compiled by minister and theologian John Trapp (1601-69) and appeared in five volumes in 1662, of which the present offering is of volume 1 only. The five volumes are extremely rare, and are found in a mere handful of libraries in the US and UK; what is most impressive about this volume is its early Colonial and Revolutionary American provenance as attested to by the signatures of ownership in the volume. This volume appears to be bound in calf leather, but the covers are sufficiently worn to prevent definitive identification of their composition. Although the front cover has become detached from the volume and the back cover is still attached but going, internally the volume is complete and readable despite foxing and some moderate age discoloration of pages. Including covers, the volume measures 7-1/2" (w) x 11-5/8" (h); this 544pp. volume includes an unnumbered "Alphabetical Table" (ie., Index) at the end of the volume. This volume supplies "Commentary or Exposition" on the following Old Testament texts: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, I Samuel, II Samuel, I Kings, II Kings, I Chronicles, and II Chronicles. GREAT NEW ENGLAND / BOSTON AREA PROVENANCE!!! The provenance of this volume in colonial New England dates from Thomas Brattle (1658-1713), a mathematician and astronomer and a founder of the Brattle St. Church in Cambridge, MA, who signed the volume on 1st October 1678; William Brattle (1662-1717), a founder of the Fir … [Click Below for Full Description]

Salvator ROSA (Napoli 1615 - Roma 1673)
"Acquaforte e puntasecca, 1662 circa, siglato in lastra, in basso al centro "Salvator Rosa Inu pinx. Sculp.". [Click Below for Full Description]

Descartes, René
Lugduni Batavorum: Apud Petrum Leffen & Franciscum Moyardum, 1662, 4°, (36), 121 pp. (123, 111/112 repeated, (1 p.) Nota, 56 woodcut and engraved text-illustrations, 10 engraved plates, contemporary vellum; complete fine copy. First Edition! Complete with all 56 woodcut and engraved text-illustrations (many of which are full-page) and the 10 full-page engraved plates (several folded), one of which is the heart-plate with the 6 moveable parts, the Cardiac-flaps. This edition was posthumously published and translation by Florentius Schuy. A seminal work, René Descartes (1596-1650) 'Treatise on man', is known as the first European textbook of physiology, and the first purely mechanistic account of bodily functions. "In the Treatise of man, Descartes did not describe man, but a kind of conceptual models of man, namely creatures, created by God, which consist of two ingredients, a body and a soul. "These men will be composed, as we are, of a soul and a body. First I must describe the body on its own; then the soul, again on its own; and finally I must show how these two natures would have to be joined and united in order to constitute men who resemble us"." (SEP). "This highly influential work was the first to present a coherent description of bodily responses in neurophysiological terms that are still, to a wide extent, accepted today. In his attempt to solve the central question around which almost all philosophical thought had revolved since the time of Aristotle, what the relation between the soul and the body actually is, Descartes came to create a milestone work of physiol … [Click Below for Full Description]

Salvator ROSA (Napoli 1615 - Roma 1673)
"Etching and drypoint, circa 1662, signed at lower center. Example of the second state of three. A fine impression, printed on contemporary laid paper with ""fluer-de-lys in a circle with grapes"" watermark, wide margins, very good condition. The work describes the myth of Ceres that, hosted by Fitalo in his home, gives him the fig tree, which was hitherto unknown to men, as a sign of gratitude. Some scholars argue that the subject is inspired by the Life of Theseus of Plutarch and others that the work is more banally due to the predilection of the artist for the fruit of the fig tree. A very good impression." Bartsch 19; Thodoli 112; Salamon 98; Massari, Tra Mito ed Allegoria, p. 446, 170 II/III.

Ottimo esemplare in bella coloritura coeva, piccole ossidazioni." Fine old color example of this important early map of Eastern Canada, etc. from 1662 Latin edition of Blaeu's Atlas Maior. Blaeu bases his map of Samuel de Champlain's great map of 1632 and maps of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), by Hessel Gerritsz, which have been augmented with place names from De Laet and Jansson. Blaeu's version shows Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Labrador and the Davis and Hudson Straits as well as the southern tip of Greenland. The elaborate title cartouches symbolize the importance of the Grand Banks fisheries, which are boldly engraved on the map. Some foxing, otherwise good conditions. Salvator ROSA (Napoli 1615 - Roma 1673)
Nice old color example of Blaeu's double hemisphere map of the World, originally prepared by Joan Blaeu for his Atlas Maior in 1662. The map was also included in contemporary composite sea atlases of the period by Goos and others. Unlike Blaeu's first world map which appeared in the majority of his atlases and was done on the Mercator projection, Blaeu utilizes a double hemisphere format and depicts California as an island. This double hemisphere map was prepared at the end of the firm's publishing history and is much rarer than its predecessor. The engraving, layout and elegance of decoration are all of the highest standard. The map depicts celestial figures seated among … [Click Below for Full Description]

(BINDINGS - CAPÉ). [MOLIÈRE]
[Amsterdam]: [A. Wolfgang], 1662. This is an attractively bound copy of Molière's popular comedy, "Sganarelle, or the Imaginary Cuckold," the most frequently performed of the author's plays during his lifetime. First staged and published in Paris in 1660 with Molière himself in the title role, it tells the story of star-crossed young lovers and the middle-aged couple who each suspect the other of cheating with one of that pair. In the end, all confusion is sorted out and the young lovers united, as Molière/Sganarelle proclaims, "You have seen how the strongest evidence can still plant a false belief in the mind. Remember well this example, and even when you see everything, never believe anything." Under the stage name "Molière," actor and playwright Jean-Baptiste Poquelin (1622-73) penned and produced satirical plays--many of which caused considerable scandal--at the Parisian theater now known as the Comédie Française. According to Britannica, "the actor in him influenced his writing, since he wrote (at speed) what he could most naturally act. . . . His characters are imagined as excitable and excited to the point of incoherence. He sacrifices plot to drama, vivacity, a sense of life. He is a classical writer, yet he is ready to defy all rules of writing." Capé (d. 1867) was one of the most distinguished binders in France in the middle years of the 19th century, and he was especially well known for the delicacy of his work. He was the binder to the Empress Eugénie, and Béraldi calls him "the Bozérian of … [Click Below for Full Description]

BINDINGS - CAPÉ).
He was the binder to the Empress Eugénie, and Béraldi calls him "the Bozérian of the second Empire.. 132 x 72 mm. (5 1/4 x 2 3/4"). 4 p.l., 40 pp. VE … [Click Below for Full Description]

1662. GOEDAERDT (Jan). Metamorphosis et Historia Naturalis Insectorum. Middelburg, J. Fierens, s.d. (1662). In-8 rel. vélin, 16 ff., 159 pp., front. & 21 pl. (Nissen, ZBI, 1602 ; Michaud, XVII, 581). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Lucretius, Titus Lucretius Carus. Tanquil Faber, Tanneguy Le Fèvre.
1662. Lucretius, Titus Lucretius Carus. Tanquil Faber, Tanneguy Le Fèvre. De Rerum Natura Libri Sex. Addita sunt Conjecturae et Emendationes Tan. Fabri Cum Notulis Perpetuis. Salmurii [Saumur] M.DC.LXII First edition with Le Fevre's notes. Quarto [16] 522 pages. Contemporary vellum; margin tear and ink ex-libris of Francise Viligiarde on title, some foxing and browning of paper. Some erased marks on ffe. Chip at bottom of spine. Wide margins. Over-all good. The text comprises pages 1-321. Tanneguy Le Fevre notes and conjectures are the last 200 pages. Le Febre’s notes are very easy to follow, with comparison of manuscripts, reasons for and against different readings. A very way to get a sense of how 17th century philologists worked. Unusually for this time, Fevre instructed his daughter Anne Dacier, the most renowned and respected woman classical scholar of the early modern period, in Latin and Greek. French histories of philosophy in her time included sections of women philosophers, often dedicated to her. “This edition of Tanaquil Faber is published with some useful emendations, conjectures, and short notes.” - Dibdin II, page 201.
