FULLER, Thomas (1608-1661)
London: Printed by J.G.W.L. and W.G. 1662 . First Edition [with the Index also in 1st. edition] Folio, engr. portrait by D. Loggan, + 3 leaves (title, Dedication, To the Reader) + 494 leaves (text) + 6 leaves (Index), light waterstain on title some foxing (occasionally heavy) and browning throughout (as usual), otherwise a very good copy, bound in full antique-style calf, 3-line fillet borders in blind, morocco label on spine. The pagination in this work is exceedingly erratic, and the signatures are not much better. For example sigs. E and K are only 3 leaves, Rr, Ss, and Zzz[z] are not required at all, and many others are 2 leaves instead of 4. A very full collation, both by signature and by pagination, is given by Strickland Gibson with which the present copy has been carefully compared. It is warranted complete. Some copies contain an index which was first printed by Olive Payne in 1737 on 6 leaves [as in the present copy], and reprinted by W. Pickering on 5 leaves c. 1825 "The Worthies is among other things a dictionary of national biography, a series of county histories, a topographical and historical gazetteer, a guide-book, and a dictionary of proverbs..... Fuller was conscientious, according to his light, in trying to check authorities. Besides, he jogged indefatigably about the country to inspect public records, manuscripts, places, and buildings, and to question natives and surviving relatives... The Worthies is a lineal descendant of the mediaeval encyclopedias. Apart from the lists of sheriffs and gentry, we skip at our risk, for Fuller's best goods … [Click Below for Full Description]

Blaeu, Ioannem et Cornelium
Blaeu [circa 1662]. () Near fine. Original map. 17" X 22" (43 X 55.8 cm). Hand coloured outlines. Crest of Russian Empire at top. Distance cartouche is flanked by a variety of detailed animals and hunters. The title cartouche is decorated with pelts and abstract decration. There is also a drawing of a ship and some small animals within the map. Vertical crease down center. Map is housed in a simple yet decorative gilt painted frame 25" X 29.5" (63.5 X 75 cm). Beige matting. Frame shows some slight wear. A beautiful map. John (Joan) and Cornelius Blaeu were the sons of Amsterdam Cartographer, instrument maker, publisher and Bookseller Willem Jans Zoon Blaeu. The brothers collaborated together on several works including the Atlas Major in 1662, which is likely where this map came from. Blaeu was appointed the official cartographer to the Dutch East India Company 1638-1673. This map shows the area from Finland to Siberia and beyond the Jenisej River and south to the Volga River, with Kazan and Novogorod. A partial coastline of Novaya Zemla is visible at the top of the map. The map is filled with mountains and forests with deer, bear and other animals throughout, all hand-coloured in an intricate and expert manner. The work was compiled from manuscripts brought back from Russia by Isaac Massa..

Johannes Goedaert (1617-1668) was a famous Dutch landscape and flower painter who lived all his life in Middelburg. "No botanical or zoological drawings are extant. An impression of them however is conveyed by his 'Metamorphosis Naturalis' with its 126 superb engravings. The book describes the results of his investigation into the metamorphosis of insects, accompanied by a large amount of original observations, some of which were prompted by experiments with his own cultures. The book stood model for several other celebrated treatises on the subject, for example Maria Sibylla Merian" (Segal, Flowers and nature, p. 198). A small number of pages somewhat browned as is mostly the case with this book. Provenance: Bookplate of John Cookney on inside frontcover and old signature of D'Apples on title. Nissen ZBI, 1602.

Bruxelles, Francisci Foppens, 1662. Small 8vo. Later modest half cloth (ab. 1800). Engraved half-page illustration to title-page and 28 half-page engravings in the text (phrenological portraits of women and animals). Light browning and a small spot to title-page, as well as a small marginal repair (no loss). A faint dampstain to inner upper margins of the last 4 leaves. Otherwise clean. An old stamp to front free end-paper, to verso of title-page, and to inside of back board. Small handwritten numbers to bottom of title-page. (8), 60 pp.. Scarce first and only edition of this highly interesting treatise on female physiognomy and beauty, which is important in being one of the few sources from this period that provide us with information on many cultural phenomena that have to do with beauty and the role of women in society, such as the mythologies of skin color. The work places itself in a tradition that goes back to della Porta's work on physiognomy from 1586; as Porta, Vaenius relies on the dual axis of humoral theory and animal analogies as means of determining mental states and traits. The emphasis is on fixed facial structures which reveal to us the mental and intellectual states of the person. Vaenius, however, has a different aim with his work. He not only wishes to explain how to determine human characters from facial structures, he wishes to determine the very essence of female beauty and does so by explaining and depicting proportional structures as well as explaining phenomena that are of great importance to our understanding of the social culture of the period, e … [Click Below for Full Description]

Blaeu, Joan (1596-1673)
Amsterdam, 1662. Copperplate engraving with hand color Framed size: 32 3/8" x 36 3/8"; Sheet size: 21" x 24 ¾" ca. 1662 This separately issued and rare coastal map is derived from Joan Blaeu's original, multi-sheet, 1647 wall map of Dutch Brazil. Blaeu's complete work was based on new topographical information gathered by Dutch explorers and a 1643 map produced by Georg Marcgraf. Marcgraf's original map not only featured a depiction of the northeast coast of Brazil (an area controlled by the Dutch West Indies Company from 1524 to 1654), but stunning illustrations by Frans Post of lavish sugar mill plantations and scenes of aboriginal peoples and Dutch colonists interacting peacefully. This particular map represents the exquisite lower-left sheet of Blaeu's original wall map and was most likely separately re-engraved, re-titled, and re-issued along with a number of Blaeu's other Brazilian coastal sheets, for the 1662 publication of Atlas Maior. . [Riga.] MÜLLER, Ernst.
Giessen, 1662. 4:o. (27) s. Titelbladet och blad A3 med träsnittsvinjetter. Fläckig med fläckigt titelblad. Tagen ur band. Ur Ericsbergs bibliotek. Variant ej i VD17, men jämför 1:639990B.

Amsterdam 1662 In the history of the house of Blaeu this Tycho Brahe suite of prints is unique. Tycho Brahe is one of the truly great figures in the history of astronomy. The founder of the company Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571 - 1638) studied cartographic science for six months in the early 1590's underTycho Brahe at the latter's observatory at Uraniborg on the Danish island of Hven. As a tribute, William's son Joan published in 1659 and later in his monumental "Atlas Major" this set of maps, plans, views and instruments relating to Tycho Brahe. Also included in this collection are the seven maps of Denmark by Blaeu. A complete set including the extra maps and not contained in an atlas, this is a collection seldom offered for sale.. Juan de San Diego y Villalon
The first French edition. 1662. Amsterdam. The Elzeviers. In 12vo (127 mm x 74 mm). 3 [blank] + 322 + 2 [blank]. In 18th century calf, spine heavily gilt in compartments, morocco title label lettered in gilt, lightly worn, hinges starting, front board becoming detached. A very fresh and clean copy, excellent condition. First French edition. A highly important document about the Jesuits history on Paraguay. By right, the Bishop of Paraguay had authority over the Jesuits at the head of the missions or Reductions –mainly located within the area of jurisdiction of the Bishop-, however, due to the natural difficulties in exercising these right, the Bishop conferred power to the superiors of the missions. c1640, this normal flow of jurisdiction was harshly interrupted with the actions of Bernardino de Cardenas and only enhanced by a memorial written by Julian de Pedraza accusing the Bishop of generating a general dislike for the Jesuits by creating false charges and even provoking attacks upon them; as consequence, his actions, general dislike and antipathy for the Jesuits brought confusion to the region and nearly ruined the Reductions. The author, who was Procurador de la Provincia del Tucum? Paraguay y Buenos Aires, replies in favor of the Bishop and gives reasons for the dislike of the Bishop towards the Jesuits. Of particular interest, the argument regarding the natives attack to Asunci?arguably lead by the Jesuits and causing the Bishop to be expelled from the city. The controversy caused was such that the work was forbidden in America, with most copies of the Spanish … [Click Below for Full Description]

BLAEU, Jan (1596-1673)
Blaeu, [Amsterdam 1662 - A handsome example of Blaeu's English county map with exceptional original colour and highlights in gold This beautifully presented county map of Hertfordshire from Johan Blaeu's Atlas Mayor, sino Cosmographia Blavania. is from the only Spanish edition of this great work. The map itself is based on John Speed's map, published in 1612, though without the town plans. Blaeu's map includes the coats of arms of two prominent families. The title cartouche illustrates Hertfordshire's relationship to London in that the county supplied corn and hay to the pleading Londoners pictured on the right hand side of the title. Because of its proximity to London, Hertfordshire had many country houses, reflected in some of the placenames on the map: Waterford Hall, Aldbery Hall, Shingle Hall, and, of course, Waymer Castle. Koeman, Atlantes Neerlandici, Bl 60A, #199. Copper-engraved map, with full original colour and gilt embellishments, mild discolouration at center fold, overall very good condition. Munich: Gioann Ieklino, 1662. Very rare first edition of this spectacular firework opera, the final part of a trilogy of operas first performed in Munich in September 1662 to celebrate the birth of Massimilio Emanuele, first son of Ferdinando Maria, duke of Bavaria and imperial elector, and Henriette Adelaide, Princess of Savoy. Eight folding plates document the sumptuous set designs by Francesco Santurini with elaborate fireworks and a staged naval battle.Ferdinand Maria and Henriette Adelaide were both fourteen years old when they were married by proxy in 1650. Their first child, a girl, was born ten years later, followed by a boy in 1662. In celebration of the new heir, "the Munich court organized a festivity which outdid in scale and variety virtually any other 17th century festivity anywhere, those at Vienna, Florence and Paris included. Not only was the whole town illuminated and the populace treated to wine from specially erected fountains, as well as bread, gold coins and commemorative medals, but the court witnessed and took part in an extraordinary spectacle." (Watanabe-O?Kelly, Triumphall shews, p.90)At its center was a trilogy consisting of the dramatic opera Fedra Incoronata, a tournament opera Antiopa Giustificata and the present work. The libretti for all three were by Count Pietro Paolo Bissari, who was joined by the court composer Johann Kasper Kerll (MGG VII, 871 ff.) and the Italian theatre designer Santorini. (Thieme/B. XXIX, 452 f) A narrative thread runs through all three dramas, and each was performed in a different locale, over a period of eight days … [Click Below for Full Description]

Robert Venables (1612-1687) rose to the rank of colonel within the parliamentary army, distinguishing himself first in Cheshire, and then commanding forces in the "pacification" of Ireland. He was appointed, jointly with William Penn, to command Cromwell's planned attack on the Southern West Indies. The mission was a disaster.
